DRM Implementation in Media and Entertainment: From Standardization to Implementation of New Technology Strategies
Content is what the entertainment and media industry produce, and the viability of the industry’s future rests on its ability to manage its content and control its distribution while at the same time making it available to an ever larger customer base. And that is the job of the DRM technology industry, to make the film, music and mobile technology delivery systems safe for mass use. In this session, we will explore, from the point of view of the technology companies, the possibilities and potential of DRM in the evolving content landscape. From CDs and DVDs to broadband and wireless delivery, DRM and content protection represents the bottom line of the future of our industries.

Albhy Galuten, Vice President of Digital Media Technology Strategy, Sony Corporation of America: Albhy Galuten is Vice President of Digital Media Technology Strategy for Sony Corporation of America (SCA). In addition to his technological achievements, Mr. Galuten is a Grammy award-winning record producer, songwriter and arranger. Mr. Galuten joined SCA in March 2005, and is responsible for the Media Technology Group. The Media Technology Group assists with technology strategy and due diligence, research & development, relationships with the content industry and the development of standards. He reports to Phil Wiser, Senior Vice President and Chief Technology Officer of Sony Corporation of America and Co-President of the Connect Company of Sony Corporation, a global, cross-company organization that is building businesses around services and software for digital media. The Connect Company is fostering collaboration between the entertainment and hardware groups of Sony to deliver complete digital media product solutions. Before coming to Sony, Mr. Galuten was Senior Vice President, Advanced Technology, Universal Music Group. Under Mr. Galuten, eLabs and Universal’s Advanced Technology group provided: strategic advice to senior management in the technology space, performed technical due diligence of software, hardware and business systems, invented technology and filed patents. Under Mr. Galuten, the group also managed standards participation, negotiated technology licenses and provided technical support for lobbying efforts and trade organizations. Before working at Universal, Mr. Galuten was a Vice President at ION where he created and developed the Enhanced CD. Prior to working in technology Mr. Galuten was a musician and record producer. In 1978 he won two Grammy awards including Producer of the Year. His original compositions and orchestrations for Film, Theatre and on record have won him a Dramalogue Award and two BMI Awards. During his music career which spanned more than 20 years, Mr. Galuten worked with numerous multi-platinum artists, produced eighteen No. 1 singles, and generated sales of more than 100 million records.

Rajan Samtani, Director, Sales & Marketing, ContentGuard: As the Director of Sales & Marketing at ContentGuard, Inc., Rajan Samtani is responsible for all market-facing activities, including marketing, PR and customer engagements. Before ContentGuard, Rajan was a founder of TheDealerNetwork, Inc., a B-2-B exchange in the personal computer industry. Prior to that he was VP of Sales and Marketing at REAL Software Systems, the leading application software vendor dealing with business rights and royalties in the entertainment, media, publishing and software markets. Rajan has a BA in Economics from UCLA and has taken several executive education courses at the Wharton school of Business.



Keith Kocho founded ExtendMedia (then Digital Renaissance) in 1991. Under his leadership, the company has been recognized for numerous awards including The Fast 50, Canada’s Fastest Growing Companies, Profit 100, and others, and he has personally received such awards as the BDC's Young Entrepreneur of the Year. He has been an advisor to Apple Computer, consultant to leading telecommunications and technology companies such as Intel, IBM and Microsoft, and has served on the advisory boards of several Colleges and Universities. In addition, Keith has spearheaded ExtendMedia’s many strategic content relationships, including partnerships with CAA and Zifferin/Brittenham. His industry roles have included board participation on ITAC, CANARIE and the Canadian Film Centre. He also currently serves on the board of the World Wildlife Fund. Prior to starting the company, Keith co-developed the first PC-based offline video editing system, EnSuite, in 1990. He is a graduate of Ryerson University with a degree in Radio and Television Arts.

Jian Zhao, CTO, Content Security Solutions, Thomson: Jian Zhao joined Thomson as CTO for Content Security Solutions with Thomson’s acquisition of MediaSec Technologies. Prior to the acquisition, he was Co-Founder and President of MediaSec Technologies LLC. In his role at Thomson, he is responsible for contributing to and communicating the technical solutions and strategy for Thomson’s Content Security. Jian Zhao is a co-inventor and the principal developer of MediaSec’s leading digital watermarking technology. Prior to joining MediaSec, he was Director for Digital Security Technology at the Fraunhofer Center for Research in Computer Graphics, Inc. in Providence, Rhode Island, and spent over 7 years in R&D with Fraunhofer Institute for Computer Graphics and the German National Research Center for Information Technology, Darmstadt, Germany. He has published about 30 scientific papers and holds more than 20 US and international patents.

Jonathan Lee, Vice President of Business Development, MediaDefender, Inc.: Jonathan is an industry expert in Internet/New Media applications and services. As a former applications developer, he has extensive knowledge in both the technical aspects as well as business related issues in emerging technology companies. Jonathan has spent several years with the Skechers USA Internet/E-Commerce Department, pushing the cutting edge of technology, lifestyle, and design. He has also been on the executive management of two successful start ups including his current position at MediaDefender, Inc. He completed his undergraduate studies at the University of California, San Diego, and received his MBA from the University of Southern California Marshall School of Business. MediaDefender, Inc. is the premier Internet Piracy Prevention (IPP) service provider. Their goal is to stop the spread of pirated material over the Internet and Peer-2-Peer Networks. Part of their strategy involves manipulating search results and serving decoys or corrupted content, aimed at frustrating the pirates and illegal users of the P2P networks. They have launched extremely successful anti-piracy campaigns in the music and movie industry, with a leading 95% effectiveness rating. Their customers include every major record label and movie studio, as well as a generous mix of independent record labels, software, and anime companies. Jonathan is prepared to talk about the current state of DRM and illegal file sharing on the Internet and Peer-2-Peer networks, as well as the historical development of these networks and their wider impact on business, society, and culture. He can also comment on the specific nuances the various content holders (movies, music, video games, software, anime) face in tackling their anti-piracy issues.

David E. Leibowitz is Managing Partner of CH POTOMAC, a strategic services firm working with companies at the intersection of entertainment, media and technology. Mr. Leibowitz brings almost thirty years of experience in business, law and policy issues facing the entertainment, new media, consumer electronics and information technology industries. Among other activities, Mr. Leibowitz serves as a senior advisor to Gotuit Media, Motorola, National Datacast, Gibson Guitar, Peppercoin, myMPO, and Demand ID Systems. Mr. Leibowitz also has worked with other clients, including BMI, 13 Colonies Software (since purchased by a large enterprise software company), CD Intelligence, and Neurok Optics. Earlier in his career, Mr. Leibowitz Co-Founded VERANCE and served as it Chairman. VERANCE offers innovative technology solutions to protect, manage, and monitor audio and audiovisual content, including broadcast monitoring and verification, copy protection and content management. Before that, Mr. Leibowitz was Executive Vice President and General Counsel of the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), responsible for business and legal issues facing the industry with particular emphasis on how to position the industry to utilize new physical and electronic format systems. During this period, Mr. Leibowitz chaired the worldwide recording industry’s International Steering Committee on DVD Audio, the RIAA New Technology and Multimedia Committee and the RIAA Legal Committee. Prior to his work at the RIAA, Mr. Leibowitz was a partner in the Washington, D.C., law firm Wiley Rein & Fielding representing a number of Fortune 100 media and entertainment companies. Mr. Leibowitz also has served as Policy Planning Advisor to the Register of Copyrights for the U.S. Copyright Office.
