| Wednesday, March 30 9:00 AM - 10:15 AM Track II: Embracing the Connected Consumer - Entertainment and Technology - From the Digital Home to the Mobile and Wi-Fi Universe In the four years since the burst of the technology bubble, an amazing thing has happened, the technology industry has once again, perhaps more quietly this time, transformed the relationship of the consumer to communications, media, entertainment and technology. . Whether its a wirelessly connected home comprised of unlimited content via DTV and HDTV, PDAs, laptops, desktops PCs, a Set-Top connection, IM devices or telephony system; a broadband mobile device, a fully loaded media friendly car, a broadband workspace or public space, the consumer is connected all the time, sending or receiving information and content. In this session, we will explore what it means to create and enable that fully connected universe. Campbell, Vice Consul, UK Trade & Investment, Moderator Scott Smyers, Chairman, DLNA Board of Directors, Vice President, Net work and Systems Architecture Division, Platform Technology Center of America, Sony Electronics: Mr. Smyers serves as the chairman of the Board of Directors of Digital Living Network Alliance and as President of DLNA Corporation. Aside from his DLNA duties, Mr. Smyers is also Vice President of the Network and Systems Architecture Division of the Platform Technology Center of America at Sony Electronics. Mr. Smyers particular area of focus is system architecture, system I/O and interfaces. Through his leadership as chairman of the 1394 Trade Association's AV Working Group over the course of seven years, Mr. Smyers has served a pivotal role in bringing about a suite of standards that define consumer device discovery and control. Mr. Smyers now also serves as the Chairman of the CE Linux Forum Steering Committee, and has in the past served as CTO and member of the Board of Directors of the 1394 Trade Association and on the UPnP Steering Committee. Mr. Smyers holds a BA in Physics and Philosophy from Cornell UniversityTom Powledge, Director, Product Management, Consumer and Client Product Delivery, Symantec Corporation: Tom Powledge is the Director of Product Management for the Consumer and Client Product Delivery team at Symantec, and is responsible for the management of the entire line of Norton consumer products. Powledge's team determines product strategy, analyzes industry trends and customer needs. His team is also responsible for competitive assessment, product positioning and pricing. Powledge joined Symantec in 1995 and served as product manager for both Norton Utilities and Norton SystemWorks. He also led the product strategy team in searching for new business opportunities for Symantec. Powledge has nine years in the industry and holds a bachelors degree from the University California Santa Barbara. Bill Carney is Director of Strategic Business Development for Texas Instruments Wireless Networking Business Unit, formerly Alantro Communications. TI acquired Alantro in September 2000, where he served as Vice-President of Sales & Marketing. Previously, he was Senior Director of Worldwide Corporate Marketing at Synopsys, Inc. Prior to his role at Synopsys, he spent 14 years with LSI Logic Corporation in a variety of management-level marketing and sales positions. Mr. Carney received his B.Sc. degree in electrical engineering from California Polytechnic State University and pursued graduate business studies at the University of Southern California, Los Angeles. He is a regular contributor to trade publications on the business and technical issues relating to the growing WLAN industry and is a frequent speaker at industry events and conferences. Mr. Carney serves as Texas Instruments representative on the Board of Directors for the Wi-Fi Alliance, the industry association serving the WLAN market Scott R. Campbell, Vice Consul, UK Trade & Investment: Scott is a N ew York City based Sector Specialist for the UK government. His role involves facilitating Business, Policy and Technology developments in both UK and North American markets for Media & Communications sectors. Scotts international business experience enables him to offer guidance to companies seeking to form strategic alliances, joint ventures and/or licensing agreements in the UK or North America. His expertise in Digital Media also lends support to a Homeland Security Task Force directed by the British Embassy out of Washington DC. President - Vedalabs Inc.: Digital Media software developer focusing on products for PCs and Digital Set Top Box applications. The company was sold to D-Stage, a publicly traded Incubator Fund in New York in 2001. Director of Business Development - Lucent Technologies: Scott was responsible for licensing Lucent's audio technologies and the underlying patents to key consumer electronics manufacturers and entertainment companies including; Sony Electronics, IBM, Intel, Samsung and Universal Music Group. CEO - Virtually Atomic: Consulting service for companies looking to adopt Digital Media production technology. Established policies and procedures for production, handling and distribution of digital media assets and for the procurement of technology and services for companies including, Virgin Radio, Virgin Retail Group, Abbey Road Studios and EMI Music. Helped US company Liquid Audio launch their online music delivery system in Europe. UK artists Duran Duran and George Michael quickly adopted the technology as part of their own marketing initiatives, which greatly helped Liquid Audio gain wide public recognition. Managing Director - MediaSpec UK Ltd.: Provided Digital Audio/Video workstations, training and support services to all major UK Broadcasters, Film Studios and independent production facilities. Clients included all BBC regions, Granada, Carlton, Pinewood & Sheparton Film Studios. Winner of the 1995 Creative Concepts Award from UK government for a handheld audio recorder called the Soundpad, which was developed on the Apple Newton platform. Recording Engineer: Prior to running his own company, Scott worked in the music industry as a recording engineer with a number of successful artists including Annie Lennox, Robbie Robertson, Deacon Blue, Wet Wet Wet, The Blue Nile and Simple Minds.Dale (Ty) Roberts, Chief Technology Officer, Gracenote: Ty Roberts is w idely recognized as one of the inventors of enhanced CD technology and is accredited with producing the industrys first enhanced CDs. He joined Gracenote in November of 1998 after the company acquired ION, a multimedia and music technology company that he founded in 1993. Roberts serves as Gracenotes chief technology strategist, providing technology direction and overseeing the creation of products and services that leverage the power of the Gracenote database to deliver information services. While at ION, Roberts produced the recording industrys first enhanced audio CD titles, including David Bowies "Jump" and "Headcandy" from Brian Eno. He was the companys lead technologist and innovator in adding multimedia content to traditional audio CDs. ION was also widely recognized as a leading provider of enhanced CD production tools utilized by recording and multimedia development companies. In September 1993, Bertlesmann Music Group created the first interactive record label after acquiring a 50 percent interest in ION. Prior to founding ION, Roberts was a founder and senior manager of LightSource, a software development company that produced multimedia and graphics editing software. Previously, he was a senior engineer at Pixar, where he created several award winning, Apple-based music applications including "Studio Session" and "Jam Session." |
