| Wednesday, January 9 3:00 PM - 4:00 PM Session A - DH15: The PC Connected Home - Extending to Portables, ITV, and other Appliances At its heart, the PC connected home is a powerhouse network delivering everything from voice, data and video services to every member of the household. Everything runs off the mainframe. Whether its a wirelessly connected home comprised of PDAs, laptops, desktops PCs, a Set-Top connection, IM devices, E-book reader, telephony system, a telewebbing device or an as yet to be determined tablet, the home is the domain of the PC. In this session, we will begin to explore what the future of the PC connected home will look like. Kelly, Director & Principal Analyst, Nielsen/Netratings Tom Reed, President, HomePlug Powerline Alliance Paul Katz, Partner, Greenberg Traurig, LLP, Moderator Kevin Eagan, General Manager, Business Development and Marketing, eHome Division, Microsoft Corp.: As a general manager of Microsoft Corp.s new eHome division, Kevin Eagan is a key stakeholder in the groups success and leads new business and product development. He maps out strategic direction for marketing and corporate investments and plays a key role in eHomes mission to extend the PCs capabilities to deliver simple and affordable connected home experiences to everyday consumers. Before assuming this role, Eagan was general manager of the Connected Home Business Unit in the Personal Services and Devices Group. In that position, he led a team charged with driving product development, testing, business development and marketing. Eagans focus on raising market awareness and forging lasting, profitable relationships with the independent hardware vendor, original equipment manufacturer, Internet service vendor, retail channel and service provider communities has resulted in a strong, profitable ecosystem of Microsoft partners. Eagan joined Microsoft in 1989, and has since held several management positions, including general manager for the Sidewalk Internet Business Unit, group product manager for Interactive TV, and product manager for Windows®. In addition to his current leadership role at Microsoft, Eagan also sits on the boards of directors for CABA, GE SMART and ITRAN. Eagan graduated with honors from Harvard University, where he earned a bachelors degree in economics. His extensive business experience in technology makes him an in-demand speaker at industry conferences and events. He was a featured presenter at COMDEX 2000, CES 2000, CEDIA 2000 and the UPnP Forum in Japan, and he recently gave the keynote address for the Association of Home Builders. Steven L. Canepa, Vice President Media & Entertainment, IBM Global: As Vice Pres ident Marketing and Strategy, Global Media and Entertainment Industry, Mr. Canepa is responsible for IBM's strategy, market-share, business attainment, industry solutions and product offerings for Entertainment, Sports, Broadcast, Cable, Publishing and Advertising customers worldwide. In addition to his management responsibilities, Mr. Canepa has participated in the structuring and negotiation of numerous consulting, services, product and partner agreements; leading the development of IBM's Global Media and Entertainment solutions business from startup to a profitable worldwide organization with over 250 members. In addition, he has developed the business strategy and plan for two Interactive WWW joint ventures and is a regular speaker at industry events, including keynote addresses at NAB and Broadcast Asia. Mr. Canepa has extensive knowledge of how the application of technology can be used to create value for an organization. He has consulted extensively with many senior executives regarding how they can enable new revenue sources, extend their brands, and create value by better managing, distributing and repurposing digital content; gaining better customer insights and knowledge by using interactive techniques -- linking their existing physical goods processes/infrastructure to their digital initiatives.David Allred, Vice President of Broadband Services, DIRECTV Broadband, Inc.: David Allred is DIRECTV Broadband, Inc.s Vice President of Broadband Services. David is responsible for business and product strategy at the company, leads new product development including all value-added services, and identifies, recruits and manages new partners for technology and service provision. David was also a key member of Telocity before acquisition by the HUGHES Electronics Corporation, serving as Senior Director, Corporate Development. Previously, David was a Senior Manager of Strategic Advisory Services at Ernst and Young. As one of a small team, he launched the dedicated business strategy practice group that subsequently grew to $75 million in revenue. David received his Masters of Business Administration from the Kellogg Graduate School of Management and a Bachelor of Science in Accounting and Finance from Brigham Young University. Tom Flanagan is Director, Broadband Strategy for Texas Instruments' Broadband Communications Group. TI's broadband communications business includes cable modems, digital subscriber line (xDSL) modems, integrated access devices (IADs), Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) gateways, carrier infrastructure, and home and office wireless networking. Prior to this, Mr. Flanagan was Director, Business Development for Telogy Networks and Vice President Sales and Marketing for ADC Skyline. Mr. Flanagan also held various marketing, sales and business development positions during a 12 year career with Dynatech Communications. He holds a B.S. degree from James Madison University. Vincent Izzo is Director of Home Networking for Motorolas Broadband Communications Sector. Izzos areas of focus include product management, product marketing and business development. In this role, he has developed relationships with fundamental home networking technology companies and defined Motorolas current product mix and roadmap for the future. He is currently charged with creating a vibrant partner/developer program for applications and services hosted on Motorola home gateways. Izzo has also been responsible for Motorolas involvement in the industrys key technology standards such as HomeRF, HomePNA, and HomePlug. Previously, Izzo was Senior Manager of Business Development for the IP Network Systems business unit of General Instrument (before the company merged with Motorola). This role included responsibility for developing partner relationships, creating commercial ties with other key organizations, and securing equity participation in areas of strategic value, specifically in the area of IP data networking. From 1997 through 1999, Izzo served as the Program Manager for the General Instrument Horizon Developers Program, helping to integrate the first interactive TV, Internet TV, and on-screen program guide applications with the core audio and video functions of GI set-tops. Prior to General Instrument, Izzo was Director of Marketing for ARINC, Inc., a communications company with products and applications helping advance the safety and efficiency of airline communications. In this role, he worked with other organizations to modernize aircraft communications for both commercial and general aviation aircraft and to assist with the FAA modernization of ground to air communications. Izzo holds a masters of science degree from Johns Hopkins University and a bachelor of science degree in electrical engineering from Lehigh University. Izzo is also a veteran of the United States Air Force. Paul R. Katz is a shareholder with the Los Angeles office of Greenberg Traurig, LLP a full-service international law firm. Katz focuses his practice on Internet, e-commerce, convergent media, intellectual property and information technology matters. He provides services to emerging companies as well as to larger organizations procuring technology. Katz is extremely knowledgeable in the areas of Computer Law, Electronic Commerce, Internet Law, Marketing and Distribution, Outsourcing, Strategic Counseling for early stage companies, Technology Development and Protection of Proprietary Property. He has represented companies involved in Internet-related businesses, including those providing content, infrastructure, site development and electronic commerce. He also has extensive experience representing various merchants, independent sales organizations and credit and debit card processors in a wide range of electronic commerce-related transactions. Katz is a member of the American Bar Association, Section of Patent, Trademark and Copyright Law; the California State Bar, Intellectual Property Section; the Computer Law Association; Cal Tech/MIT Enterprise Forum; Los Angeles New Media Roundtable; and the Virtual International Community. A graduate of the University of California at Los Angeles School of Law, Katz is a recognized author and speaker on topics including the protection of databases, electronic documents and digital signaturing.T.S. Kelly heads the Internet Media Strategies service of NetRatings, Inc. H e analyzes the interactive trends and developments in media including broadcasting, cable, telecommunications, technology, broadband, streaming content, and gaming. He focuses on the content development, distribution, and delivery issues facing traditional and online entertainment and media companies. He also oversees the analysis of developing Internet media companies as well as Nielsen//NetRatings data on local markets, rich and streaming media, connection speed trends, and other key indicators critical to decision makers in the media community. Mr. Kelly is a frequent speaker at many Internet media focused events such as eTV World, Entertainment Online, Streaming Media, and Digital Hollywood. He regularly speaks on "Converge for Success in the New Broadband World," and additional topics include bandwidth/Internet connection speed data, streaming media profiles, and broadband content and content evolution. Mr. Kelly has over 10 years of experience in both interactive and traditional media research. Before joining NetRatings, he was director of research and marketing for the Katz Media Corporation. Here he held positions in strategic development and planning for the companys radio division, the Katz Radio Group. He was responsible for managing the companys research department and strategic development, with much of his focus on technology analysis, ad placement, broadcast marketing and multi-media audience measurement. He also served as Director of Marketing and Research for Katz Millennium Interactive, the predecessor to the Internet advertising sales and representation company now known as 24/7 Media. Mr. Kelly earned a B.A. in mass communication from Adelphi University and a masters degree in cable and broadcast management from the S.I. Newhouse School of Syracuse University. He is proficient in both audio and video production, having managed the Adelphi University-affiliated radio station, WBAU-FM.Tom Reed, President, HomePlug Powerline Alliance: Tom Reed is the 2001 president of the HomePlug Powerline Alliance, a nonprofit corporation, comprised of more than 90 companies, established to provide a forum for the creation of specifications for home powerline networking products and services; and to accelerate the demand for these products and services through the sponsorship of market and user education programs. As president of HomePlug, Reed is focused on supporting member company initiatives, creating consumer demand and education for these new products, and solving regulatory issues for product sales in Europe and Japan. With experience in emerging technologies, as well as consumer marketing, Reed is poised to extend HomePlug from industry insider awareness into the mass-market consumer products mindset. Reed is striving to significantly expand HomePlug during his tenure as president. Reeds goals include growing the Alliance membership, rolling-out new HomePlug-compliant products, driving product demand, and expanding HomePlugs presence in key international markets. Reed has established the benchmark that within the next five years HomePlugs product portfolio will double analyst projections for the percentage of market share for connected home products. Reed has been an integral part of HomePlug since the Alliances inception and served as the Alliances Marketing Working Group chairman, as well as a board alternate. Reed succeeds Alberto Mantovani, director of small business and consumer networking within Conexant Systems Inc.s Personal Computing Division, who served as the first president of HomePlug. A forward-thinker and trend-tracker in the industry, Reed has presented at a myriad of industry conferences and events, including Broadband Home Conference, Consumer Electronics Show (CES) and COMDEX. |
