Embracing the Connected Consumer - Entertainment and Technology - From the Broadband Home to the Mobile and Wi-Fi Universe
In the three years since the burst of the technology bubble, an amazing thing has happened, the technology industry has once again, perhaps more quietly this time, transformed the relationship of the consumer to communications, media, entertainment and technology. . Whether it’s a wirelessly connected home comprised of unlimited content via DTV and HDTV, PDAs, laptops, desktops PCs, a Set-Top connection, IM devices or telephony system; a broadband mobile device, a fully loaded media friendly car, a broadband workspace or public space, the consumer is connected all the time, sending or receiving information and content. In this session, we will explore what it means to create and enable that fully connected universe.

Glenda Dorchak is Vice President, Intel Communications Group (ICG) and General Manager, Consumer Electronics Group (CEG). Previously she served as Vice President, Intel Communications Group, and Chief Operating Officer. The Consumer Electronics Group is chartered with building leadership in media processing solutions for the digital home and digital office. Dorchak began her career with IBM and served in various executive positions in sales, marketing, and planning. Prior to Intel, she was the Chairman and CEO of Value America, Inc., an online retailer of computers, software, office equipment, electronics, and entertainment (i.e. books, CDs, DVDs, movies). In November of 1999, Dorchak was named one of the top 25 executives of the new millennium by Computer Reseller News. The Intel Communications Group develops a wide range of products for original equipment manufacturers and telecommunication equipment manufacturers, for computing and communications applications, both wired and wireless.

Scott R. Campbell, Vice Consul, British Trade International, British Consulate-General: Scott is a New York City based Sector Specialist for the UK government. His role involves facilitating Business, Policy and Technology developments in both UK and North American markets for Media & Communications sectors. Scott’s international business experience enables him to offer guidance to companies seeking to form strategic alliances, joint ventures and/or licensing agreements in the UK or North America. His expertise in Digital Media also lends support to a Homeland Security Task Force directed by the British Embassy out of Washington DC. President - Vedalabs Inc.: Digital Media software developer focusing on products for PCs and Digital Set Top Box applications. The company was sold to D-Stage, a publicly traded Incubator Fund in New York in 2001. Director of Business Development - Lucent Technologies: Scott was responsible for licensing Lucent's audio technologies and the underlying patents to key consumer electronics manufacturers and entertainment companies including; Sony Electronics, IBM, Intel, Samsung and Universal Music Group. CEO - Virtually Atomic: Consulting service for companies looking to adopt Digital Media production technology. Established policies and procedures for production, handling and distribution of digital media assets and for the procurement of technology and services for companies including, Virgin Radio, Virgin Retail Group, Abbey Road Studios and EMI Music. Helped US company Liquid Audio launch their online music delivery system in Europe. UK artists Duran Duran and George Michael quickly adopted the technology as part of their own marketing initiatives, which greatly helped Liquid Audio gain wide public recognition. Managing Director - MediaSpec UK Ltd.: Provided Digital Audio/Video workstations, training and support services to all major UK Broadcasters, Film Studios and independent production facilities. Clients included all BBC regions, Granada, Carlton, Pinewood & Sheparton Film Studios. Winner of the 1995 Creative Concepts Award from UK government for a handheld audio recorder called the Soundpad, which was developed on the Apple Newton platform. Recording Engineer: Prior to running his own company, Scott worked in the music industry as a recording engineer with a number of successful artists including Annie Lennox, Robbie Robertson, Deacon Blue, Wet Wet Wet, The Blue Nile and Simple Minds.

Kevin Furuichi is the Executive Producer & Creative Director, North America for OpenTV, Inc. He supervises a creative team responsible for designing and producing digital interactive television experiences including the PlayJam games channel as well as numerous enhanced TV projects for network partners such as ABC, Bloomberg, and the Discovery Channel. Most recently, his team created the first Fantasy Sports service on EchoStar's Dish Network available to over 6 million homes and is currently designing the PlayJam game service in South Africa to incorporate SMS services into the channel experience. Prior to joining OpenTV, Mr. Furuichi spent 14-years producing and directing news and sports programming for CBS, NBC, FOX and ESPN.

Ken Wirt, Senior Vice President of Product Management, Palm, Inc.: Prior to joining Palm, Ken was the founder and chief executive officer of Riffage.com, a venture capital-funded music media company backed by Mayfield Fund, Bertelsmann and AOL. The management team he recruited built Riffage into a popular music site on the Internet, with 1 million unique visitors per month, signing major sponsors including Sony, Sega, Lipton's and Telocity. Before founding his own company, Ken was vice president of corporate marketing for Diamond Multimedia Systems, a leading PC peripherals company, where he managed all worldwide marketing functions, tech support, customer service and Internet marketing. Ken also led the introduction of the Rio portable MP3 player, which established the MP3 market and maintains a leading share today after the entry of Sony, Compaq, Philips, Samsung and Intel, among others. Previously, Ken headed marketing for Apple Computer's PIE (personal interactive electronics) division, overseeing all Newton marketing programs. Ken also has held key marketing roles at NEC Technologies, Cognitive Systems and Atari. He holds a master of business administration degree from Stanford University and an undergraduate degree from the University of Michigan.

Dale (Ty) Roberts, Chief Technology Officer, Gracenote: Ty Roberts is widely recognized as one of the inventors of enhanced CD technology and is accredited with producing the industry’s first enhanced CDs. He joined Gracenote in November of 1998 after the company acquired ION, a multimedia and music technology company that he founded in 1993. Roberts serves as Gracenote’s chief technology strategist, providing technology direction and overseeing the creation of products and services that leverage the power of the Gracenote database to deliver information services. While at ION, Roberts produced the recording industry’s first enhanced audio CD titles, including David Bowie’s "Jump" and "Headcandy" from Brian Eno. He was the company’s lead technologist and innovator in adding multimedia content to traditional audio CDs. ION was also widely recognized as a leading provider of enhanced CD production tools utilized by recording and multimedia development companies. In September 1993, Bertlesmann Music Group created the first interactive record label after acquiring a 50 percent interest in ION. Prior to founding ION, Roberts was a founder and senior manager of LightSource, a software development company that produced multimedia and graphics editing software. Previously, he was a senior engineer at Pixar, where he created several award winning, Apple-based music applications including "Studio Session" and "Jam Session." Roberts is Gracenote’s representative to the Secure Digital Music Initiative (SDMI), organization that is chartered with establishing standards for digital music and music playing devices. Well-known within the music industry community, Roberts has spoken at numerous conferences and events, including CES, Digital Hollywood, Plug-In and ISMIR.

Tony Barra, Chief Strategy Officer, Internet Home Alliance, President, Filament Consulting: Tony Barra is Chief Strategy Officer (CSO) of Internet Home Alliance. In this role, Barra is responsible for developing connected home business models and value chain analyses and new member recruitment. Barra recently launched his own consulting firm specializing in business model development and value chain analysis for the connected home industry. Prior to forming Filament Consulting, Barra was a principal at DiamondCluster International, a leading digital strategy firm. Barra led many projects including a detailed economic analysis of the value chain for delivering Internet based managed services to residential customers and a white paper evaluating the many technology protocols competing in today's home networking marketplace. Barra has led the development of a strategic partnership framework that assesses the strengths of companies in each segment of the connected home industry. Additional industries in which Barra led projects included real estate, energy, financial services and consumer products. Prior to that Barra was with Electronic Data Systems for nine years holding several leadership positions with expertise in product development processes and design technologies. Barra held positions with Ohmeda Medical Engineering and General Motors Corp. Barra has a MBA from the University of Michigan where he graduated with high distinction and a Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering degree from General Motors Institute.

John Kang is the Director of Business Development for Samsung Electronic's Home Media Solution group. His current role is to explore and engage in business opportunities revolving around Samsung's set-top box products here in N. America. John joined Samsung in 2000, when he was responsible for Samsung's cable modem initiatives. He previously held positions in management consulting, the Disney Channel, and AT&T.
