| Tuesday, September 24 12:30 PM - 1:45 PM Session B: Standardization and the ITV Industry As the iTV and DTV technology reaches into the consumer marketplace, it is more important than ever for the technology companies and the producers of content as well as the infrastructure companies and the channels of distribution, the server and set-top industry to settle on iTV/DTV standards so that the consumer can benefit from increased and more complex services and compelling interactive content. Fragmentation has plagued the iTV industry, preventing the industry to realize its ability to not only grow, but importantly, to fully monetize its services. In this session, we will explore the barriers to standardization as well as the proposals for greater growth in the industry. Rosemary Danon, Vice President Interactive Services, Liberty Livewire Ian Tapp, Vice President, Market Development, NDS Americas Darryl DeFreese, Principal Architect, Founder, N2 Broadband Martijn Lopes Cardozo, Vice President of Product Management, GoldPocket and Chairman, iTV Production Standards Committee, Moderator Vincent Dureau, Chief Technical Officer Vincent Dureau is responsible for developing technologies and business relationships that will bring integrated, cost-effective solutions to equipment vendors, network operations and content and service providers. He has been with OpenTV since the company's inception and has been responsible for developing a world-class engineering organization. With more than 17 years of technical expertise, Dureau launched his engineering career in 1984 with Thomson's research department in Paris, France. He later joined Thomson's research lab in Los Angeles. For the past eight years, he has led technical developments in the field of multimedia, consumer user interfaces, video compression and interactive television. Dureau holds an engineering degree in economics from the Institute National Agronomique and master's degrees from Universite Paris VII in applied mathematics and Ecole Nationale Superieure des Telecommunications in computer science. Christopher Cunningham serves as Wink Communications Inc.s Vice President of Business Development. In addition to structuring and negotiating business relationships, Cunningham is responsible for developing company vision and strategy as well as the company roadmap for expanding Winks iTV services. In addition to driving major integration and business deals with iTV platform, technology and service providers, Cunningham also works closely to develop relationships with broadcasters, studios and cable networks interested in developing and deploying iTV services on the Wink platform. A seasoned executive with more than 15 years of iTV industry experience, Cunningham was most recently Director of Business Development at ReplayTV, Inc. In that capacity he spearheaded new business development efforts centered on third-party technology, new media and content partners as well as formulated key business strategies related to product marketing and development of personal TV services. Cunningham has previously held a variety of senior management positions with OpenTV, Inc. and Silicon Graphics, Inc. Cunningham holds a Master of Business and Administration in Marketing and Entrepreneurial Management from The Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania and a B.S. in Psychology from Duke University. Martijn Lopes Cardozo, Vice President of Product ManagementAs Vice President of Product Management at GoldPocket Interactive, Martijn Lopes Cardozo manages the companys product development strategy and its technical partnerships with production and post-production companies. He is also Chairman of the iTV Production Standards Initiative, an effort driven by the TV and iTV production community that provides a common method for writing and producing iTV content. Lopes Cardozo brings to GoldPocket a decade of product and operations management experience at Akamai Technologies in Cambridge, EOS in London, Unilever in Germany, and OC&C Strategy Consultants in the Netherlands. He has extensive experience with product development life cycles and building bridges between technical and business requirements. He has an MBA from Harvard Business School and an MS in Applied Physics from the Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands. Rosemary Danon, Vice President, Interactive Services Group, Liberty Livewire: Rosemary Danon is a television innovator whose career has spanned more than 20 years in the broadcast and cable television industries, as well as in the burgeoning area of new technologies, digital television production and the Internet. In her role as Vice President, Interactive Services of Liberty Livewire Corporation, a subsidiary of Liberty Media Group, Danon has helped to pioneer the development of new media for interactive television. Specifically, she creates enhanced content and then synchronizes it with television programming to provide consumers with a richer, interactive, non-linear viewing experience. Prior to joining Liberty Livewire in 1999, Danon served as general manager of AT&T Broadband & Internet Services new National Digital Television Center in Los Angeles, where she oversaw the design, construction and day-to-day operation of its 125,000 square-foot production complex. Housed in this location is state-of-the-art digital production, post-production, origination and transmission facilities that serve the needs of the Hollywood entertainment and Southern California advertising industries. In 1990, Danon helped chart a new frontier in cable television programming with the development of the award-winning International Channel, a basic cable network with programs around-the-clock in 29 different languages that reach over ten million U.S. households. As Executive Vice President, she oversaw all program development, acquisitions sales and network operations. Danon's introduction to ethnic television came in 1987 when, as vice president and general manager of KSCI-TV in Los Angeles, she developed the format that would later go nationwide on the International Channel. During much of her tenure at KSCI-TV she managed and programmed both the television station and the cable network. Danon began her broadcast career in 1982 and subsequently held various production, news, marketing and operations positions at KDOC (TV) in Anaheim, CA and KIHS/KHSN (TV) in Ontario, CA. Her programming efforts have been honored with an Emmy Award in 1996 for Best Instructional Program from the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences for the multi-part series "American Citizenship: A Dream Come True." Other awards include nine Emmy nominations for local programming, the Gabriel Award for Station of the Year and the Los Angeles Mayor's Award for Community Service. A native Californian, Danon graduated from California State Fullerton with a bachelor's degree in communications. Danon is a board member of the Los Angeles Sports and Entertainment Commission, Coro Southern California, the Hollywood Entertainment Museum and is a member of the Digital Coast Roundtable, Women in Cable, the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences and the Museum of Television and Radio. Ian Tapp, Vice President, Market Development, NDS Americas, BSc Di pM MCIM, Ian Tapp graduated in Electronic Engineering from the University of Hertfordshire in the United Kingdom in 1982 and in 1995 obtained a Diploma in Marketing from the Chartered Institute of Marketing. He has spent 15 years in the field of digital communications systems, initially in design and development and latterly in Product Marketing and Business Development. In 1992 he joined NDS, a leading digital broadcasting equipment manufacturer. At NDS he has held several positions starting as Product Manager of the award winning System 3000 Digital Television System. In 1996 he transferred to NDS Americas Inc. as Vice President Market Development and now heads the Business Development activities of NDS within the Americas region.Darryl DeFreese, Principal Architect, Founder, N2 Broadband: As the lead in architecting billing and security interfaces for new products and services, Darryl brings 21 years of experience as a software engineer and lead architect for major software systems to the Company. He designed the security systems and billing interfaces for Scientific-Atlanta's digital network and is considered an industry expert in those interfaces. Darryl has six patents pending. He holds a degree in computer science from the University of Georgia and has experience in two start-up software and communications companies. |
