And that is the job of the DRM technology industry, to make the film, music and mobile technology delivery systems safe for mass use. In this session, we will explore, from the point of view of the technology companies, the possibilities and potential of DRM in the evolving content landscape. From CDs and DVDs to broadband and wireless delivery, DRM and content protection represents the bottom line of the future of our industries. Leibowitz, Managing Partner, CH Potomac, Moderator Carter Laren, Senior Security Architect, Cryptography Research: Carter Laren is Cryptography Research's technical liaison to Hollywood studios, content owners and consumer electronics manufacturers. Affectionately referred to as the "Anti-Pirate," he has extensive experience designing and evaluating secure communication and pay-television systems, tamper resistant devices, and content protection technology. Prior to joining Cryptography Research, Carter designed secure communication systems for both commercial and classified government applications. As a Weapon Systems Engineer at Lockheed Martin, he also designed and tested critical components of the AEGIS Combat System. Carter holds a B.S. degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Pittsburgh, where he was awarded the elite Chancellor's Scholarship.Rajan Samtani, Director, Sales & Marketing, ContentGuard: As the Dire ctor of Sales & Marketing at ContentGuard, Inc., Rajan Samtani is responsible for all market-facing activities, including marketing, PR and customer engagements. Before ContentGuard, Rajan was a founder of TheDealerNetwork, Inc., a B-2-B exchange in the personal computer industry. Prior to that he was VP of Sales and Marketing at REAL Software Systems, the leading application software vendor dealing with business rights and royalties in the entertainment, media, publishing and software markets. Rajan has a BA in Economics from UCLA and has taken several executive education courses at the Wharton school of Business.Gerard Fernando, PhD, Senior Staff Engineer, Sun Labs: Gerard Fernando joined Sun Microsystems Laboratories in 1991 and has since been involved in several projects and product development efforts on media. He also has participated and led standards activities in ISO/MPEG and IETF. The main focus of these standardization activities has been on audio-visual media, including Java technology in MPEG. Recently, he has been focusing on DRM and digital head-end solution development. Prior to joining Sun, Gerard worked at Philips Research Labs in Europe, where he focused on research and development of TV and HDTV signal processing and display technology.Gerard has several patents from his work at Sun and Philips. He obtained his Ph.D. degree from Imperial College in London. Reed Stager is the vice president of Corporate Licensing, Marketing and Public Policy for Digimarc Corp. In this role, Mr. Stager leads Digimarcs strategic alliance and licensing relationships with entertainment, consumer electronic and information technology companies, and standard-setting bodies around the world as well as directs Digimarcs state, federal and international policy activities regarding copyright protection and media distribution. Mr. Stager serves as a board member to the Oregon Regional Alliance for Infrastructure & Network Security (RAINS) and is also chairman of the Government Affairs Committee of the Document Security Alliance (DSA), which is a public/private partnership of 15 federal agencies and more than 60 companies focused on improving document security. Mr. Stager has spoken about and worked extensively on digital media distribution, content protection and digital watermarking issues involving music, movies and digital images. Mr. Stager has more than 20 years of executive and management experience in high-technology and security companies and holds an M.B.A. from Portland State University and a B.S. in business from Lewis and Clark College.Adam Gervin is Sr. Director Marketing for the Entertainment Technolog ies Group at Macrovision, where he manages a global team developing and executing the worldwide marketing strategy for ETGs content value management products. Dr. Gervin previously served as Vice President Marketing and Business Development at VerdiSoft Corporation, a privately-funded Silicon Valley startup acquired by Yahoo! In 2005. VerdiSoft provides client/server data infrastructure for global wireless and wireline telecommunication providers. During his tenure at VerdiSoft, Mr. Gervin designed and brought to market their feature product ConnectedLife - and cultivated strategic relationships with Qualcomm, Yahoo!, Openwave Systems, and Danger Inc. Prior to VerdiSoft, Dr. Gervin served as Director of Business Development for SEVEN Networks, Sr. Manager Business Development at Openwave Systems, and Sr. Manager Business Development Onebox.com. Over this time, Dr. Gervin developed strategic partnerships with Microsoft, SUN Microsystems, Nortel Networks, Cisco Networks, PalmOne, PalmSource, Handspring (now part of PalmOne), and led Openwaves VoiceXML sales and marketing strategy, supporting its IP-based voicemail line of business. Dr. Gervin first entered the technology world after a post-doctoral fellowship at the Pasteur Institute and Stanford University School of Medicine. Dr. Gervin trained in Surgery at Harvards Brigham and Womens Hospital, received his doctoral degrees at Stanford University School of Medicine, and his B.S. at Yale College.David E. Leibowitz is Managing Partner of CH POTOMAC, a strategic ser vices company focused on the entertainment, media and technology industries. Mr. Leibowitz brings twenty-five years of experience in copyright, media, communications, and technology matters, as well as business issues facing the entertainment, new media, consumer electronics and information technology industries. Among other activities, Mr. Leibowitz serves on the Industry Advisory Boards of Peppercoin, 13 Colonies Software, and Neurok Optics. Earlier in his career, Mr. Leibowitz Co-Founded VERANCE and served as it Chairman. VERANCE offers innovative technology solutions to protect, manage, and monitor audio and audiovisual content, including broadcast monitoring and verification, copy protection and content management. Before that, Mr. Leibowitz was Executive Vice President and General Counsel of the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), responsible for business and legal issues facing the industry with particular emphasis on how to position the industry to utilize new physical and electronic format systems. During this period, Mr. Leibowitz chaired the worldwide recording industrys International Steering Committee on DVD Audio, the RIAA New Technology and Multimedia Committee and the RIAA Legal Committee. Prior to his work at the RIAA, Mr. Leibowitz was a partner in the Washington, D.C., law firm Wiley Rein & Fielding. Mr. Leibowitz also has served as Policy Planning Advisor to the Register of Copyrights for the U.S. Copyright Office. |
