Urban Media Expands: From Music, TV and Cable to Wireless and Broadband
Today's Black and urban media and entertainment barons of the old and new school, clearly understand and service a globally diverse consumer and advertiser base. In this session, executives and dealmakers will explore the issues of the expanding urban entertainment landscape. The who’s who of leadership in the urban entertainment landscape is quickly becoming essential to creators, sellers, buyers and consumers. Join us as we explore hot topics such as the cable, satellite and broadcast viewership; the emergence of synergies in advertising and branding opportunities; the expanded life of music and film sectors; the world of magazines and how do they gain market share; and the total relationship of the media industry to the consumers, advertisers, buyers and sellers. Nichol Bradford, Brand Manager, Vivendi Universal Games: As a Brand Manager at Vivendi Universal Games, Bradford markets video games tied to major film properties like Van Helsing and Fight Club. She works extensively with Universal Studios Motion Picture Group, Fox and other Studios/content holders to bring properties to the 3-D interactive world. Prior to VUG, Bradford spent two years at Disney Interactive/Buena Vista Games, a division of The Walt Disney Company, as a Marketing/Licensing Manager on video games for Finding Nemo, Pirates of the Caribbean, Haunted Mansion, Lilo & Stitch and Spy Kids among others. During this time, she worked closely with the Studio, Miramax Films, Pixar, and Jerry Bruckheimer Films. Nichol Bradford is committed to the growth and development of the video game industry as evidenced by her Event Chairmanship of an exhibit titled, Into The Pixel: A Celebration of Video Game Art. Into the Pixel was a joint project between E3, the Academy of Interactive Arts and Sciences and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art where Bradford sits on the Board of the Graphic Arts Council (G.A.C.) at. In 2001, she received her MBA in Strategic Management from the Wharton School of Business. Before graduate school, Bradford worked in New York in cosmetics and fashion licensing at Estee Lauder and The Anne Klein Company. She earned her BBA in Marketing from the University of Houston. During her spare time, Bradford has begun work on her second novel.

Keith Clinkscales is the President of KTC Ventures, a consulting entity specializing in media, marketing and cultural communications. He was formerly Chairman and CEO of Vanguarde Media, Inc., a premier publisher of magazine titles for the powerful and discerning Urban Market. The Vanguarde titles were sold in 2004 to separate publishers. Clinkscales is widely heralded as the catalyst for and originator of the Urban media revolution and is frequently called upon to advise corporate marketers on how to reach this influential consumer audience. Keith established Vanguarde in 1999 to give voice to the issues, interests and concerns of today's urban audiences. Publisher of Heart & Soul, HONEY, SAVOY and Savoy Professional magazines, VMI became a force in defining the American urban marketplace, its publications reaching more than 5 million readers and providing news, trends and features on urban music, fashion, entertainment, politics and wellness through its print publications, online media channels and conferences. Prior to starting Vanguarde, Clinkscales served as president and CEO of VIBE magazine, one of the fastest growing and most influential magazines in pop culture history. He catapulted VIBE from a consumer music magazine with a circulation of less than 100,000 to a comprehensive, industry-standard urban lifestyle publication reaching 700,000 readers in under 6 years. A magna cum laude graduate of Florida A&M University, Clinkscales is also a Harvard MBA, serves as Treasurer of the Apollo Theater Foundation Board of Trustees, and is an Academic Director for the Stanford Professional Publishing Course. Keith is also a member of PepsiCo’s Multicultural Advisory Board and of Young Presidents’ Organization.

KENNETH L. TURNER, Senior Vice President and General Manager, AOL Key Audiences: As Senior Vice President and General Manager of AOL Key Audiences, Kenneth Turner is responsible for setting the strategy and managing America Online’s emerging businesses including AOL Latino, AOL for Small Business, and the African American programming group (AOL Black Focus, Africana.com, and BlackVoices.com). Before assuming his current responsibilities within the company, Kenn served as CEO of Africana.com & Vice President, AOL Web Properties where he oversaw the operation and management of this subsidiary property and was a key player in the positioning of this company for acquisition by Time Warner in 2000. Before joining AOL, Kenn worked for Hasbro, Inc. During his five year tenure he led various product development and brand management efforts, including the US regional marketing team and the company's trade marketing departments. Kenn worked for Hallmark Cards, Inc. in the late-1980s, rising to Business Marketing Manager Alternative Cards and Stationary. Assuming roles of increasing responsibility during his eight-year tenure, Kenn completed stints in executive development, new product development, new business strategy, and brand management. He was also instrumental in the development of Hallmark's first ever African American-oriented line of greeting cards, Mahogany. Kenn earned a Bachelor of Science degree at Southern University, Baton Rouge, LA. An NROTC scholarship midshipman in college, Kenn received a regular commission in the United States Navy where he served in the submarine service on active duty for seven years. During the 1980s, he completed various assignments including Assistant Nuclear Weapons Officer onboard USS Stonewall Jackson and taught at the Naval Guided Missiles School. Kenn resigned his active commission in 1987 and transferred to the US Naval Reserves, where he currently holds the rank of Captain and is assigned to the office of the Director, Navy Staff to the Chief of Naval Operations at the Pentagon.

Mark Walton is President & CEO of Onyx Media Group International, Inc. (OMG), a New York City based marketing, advertising sales and program distribution company, he formed in 1991. Over the past thirteen years, OMG has secured sponsorship and distribution for over fifty (50) independently produced television series and specials. Mr. Walton has led the company’s efforts to generate advertising revenue from an array of blue chip companies (e.g. P&G, Kraft, GM), syndicate TV programs, both domestically and internationally, (e.g. Tuskegee Airmen, Hispanic Heritage Awards) as well as advise TV and film executives. Last year, his company syndicated the off-network dramatic series – New York Undercover. Prior to forming OMG, Mr. Walton spent over ten years with the CBS Television Network in New York City holding various management positions in Sales, Marketing and Management. In his last assignment, in TV Network Sales, he was responsible for selling News, Daytime, Late Night and Children’s programs and managed a portfolio of clients whose billings exceeded $75 million. He was successful in attracting a number of non-network TV advertisers to CBS (e.g. Fuji Film, NCR, Domino’s Pizza). Mr. Walton joined CBS in 1979, as the first Television Network Management Trainee and successfully completed an extensive yearlong orientation to network television. Mr. Walton was also a founding partner and head of marketing in the film distribution company – KJM3 Entertainment Group. In 1992, they developed the successful distribution and marketing strategy for Julie Dash’s Daughters of the Dust. They were also the U.S. distributors for The Man By The Shore (Raoul Peck / Haiti), Out of Sync (Debbie Allen / U.S.), Rude (Clement Virgo / Canada), More Time (Isaac Mabhikwa / Zimbabwe) and Neria (Goodwin Mawuru / Zimbabwe). He was a A.A.A.A (MAIP) intern in account management at the advertising agency of D’Arcy, MacManus & Masius (DMB&B) and a staff writer for Encore newsmagazine.

Jaymes A. Hines, President and Co-Founder, NDY Media Group: A leading arts and entertainment industry professional for over 15 years, Jaymes Hines is co-founder and managing partner of NDY Media Group. NDY Media Group formed in 2002, is a digital entertainment media and merchandise licensing company specializing in consulting, marketing, advertising sales and program distribution of branded, indie film festival content for direct-to-consumer, educational and advertiser supported broadcast, broadband and mobile entertainment networks. NDY Media Group is the parent to NDY Films, Blackstage.net and the Global Film Festivals Initiative whose focus is to develop and distribute content and films and to educate audiences to Black, Pan African and multi-ethnic themed cinema content from the Americas, Europe, Caribbean and Africa. Jaymes is considered one of the most experienced individuals in digital content rights management, media business models, industry foresight, and on-demand technology solutions for media content companies that focus on culturally diverse emerging online communities. Prior to the NDY Media Group, in 1994 Jaymes formed the production company, MBA Interactive. At that time he became involved in the Internet and is a veteran multimedia producer and publisher with numerous interactive projects to his credit. Recognized during the dotcom boom as one of the "Top 100 Most Influential People of the Web" by WebSight, an Internet trade publication, he has developed, consulted, and implemented streaming solutions and webcasts for projects for mass media and entertainment industry clients. Among these projects are the website and online marketing events for critically acclaimed Director Spike Lee's Oscar nominated documentary "4 Little Girls". Other interactive productions include the first online chat and website of syndicated television show, America's Black Forum’s television specials on The Digital Divide: TECH-NO. In the late 1980's Jaymes Hines was a content consultant for CD-i (pre-DVD) developer, Philips Interactive Media of America, which lead to his 1993-95 associations with Epic Interactive Media, the UK's largest multimedia communications company. As an associate producer, he was responsible for the acquisition of intellectual property rights for joint ventures and co-productions for interactive games. Among the many music, television and newmedia conferences and summits both domestically and internationally, Jaymes has provided insight for are: Milia, Midem, Webnoize'98, EPM (Entertainment Promotions Marketing) Conference, Globalization of Entertainment - Digital Hollywood, Congressional Black Caucus, Democracy 2000, Public Policy and the Internet, World Television Forum, Standards & Poor’s Media Summit NYC 2004, 57th annual Cannes Film Festival and Souk Ukaz Festival in Amman, Jordan. Jaymes has served with other industry professionals as a member of various arts, entertainment and technology advisory boards and panels, such as: California Arts Council (CAC), Newmedia Forum, Association of Internet Professionals, AFI's Digital Television Workshop, Public Relations and Marketing in Excellence Awards, (PRAME), Development Board of National Black Programming Consortium (NBPC), Fespaco Paul Robeson Award Initiative and Rainbow PUSH’s Wall Street West Entertainment Business Symposium.
