And that is the job of the DRM technology industry, to make the film, music and mobile technology delivery systems safe for mass use. In this session, we will explore, from the point of view of the technology companies, the possibilities and potential of DRM in the evolving content landscape. Leibowitz, Managing Partner, CH Potomac, Moderator Jan Steenkamp, CEO, Entriq, Inc.: As CEO of Entriq, Jan Steenkamp brings to the company his extensive experience in pay television operations, gained from a range of management positions within MIH Limited (MIHL) since 1985. Before joining Entriq, Steenkamp was CEO of MIHL's technology division and Chairman of OpenTV Corp. until August 2002. Prior to this, he was CEO of OpenTV, where he was instrumental in its development as the leading provider of cost-effective solutions for the delivery of digital interactive services to television viewers around the world. Previously, Steenkamp was the Commercial Director of Irdeto Consultants in The Netherlands, and held various management and new business initiative positions at both Irdeto and the MIH Group from 1985 to 1997. During that time, he initiated the introduction of pay television in Greece, managed a project team to establish pay television in Italy, worked with Shinawatra in Thailand to establish digital television, worked with Galaxy in Australia to launch the first DVB digital DTH platform in the world, and was active in the acquisition and development of the European Nethold operations in The Netherlands, Belgium, Finland, Sweden, Denmark and Norway. Steenkamp studied electrical engineering at Witwatersrand Technicon in South Africa and has a television broadcasting background. Today, he is a sought-after speaker on the topics of Pay Media over the Internet and the future of broadband.Peter Kaars, Director of Business Development, Philips Electronics: P eter Kaars, Director of Business Development for Philips Electronics, has been with Philips for more than 15 years. Kaars, based in the U.S./West Coast, represents Philips in a technical capacity working with content providers on issues ranging from DRM and content protection to new technologies and entertainment formats. In this position, he is at the crossroads of the media and high-technology industries. Kaars began his career in Philips in Computer Aided Design, working in multimedia with Philips Research in the Netherlands. In 1994, he joined Philips Digital Networks, where he played a key role in such pioneering developments as Video on Demand, Digital Satellite TV, Digital Cable TV and Internet streaming. During this time, he also served as a member of various DVB standardization committees including the Multimedia Home Platform for interactive television. Kaars was graduated from the University of Amsterdam, where he worked on numerical simulation of solid state physics.Bruce Davis, Chairman & CEO, Digimarc Corp.: Digimarc is working with partners to expand the market for digital watermarking-based broadcast monitoring and forensic tracking. Digital watermarking is a DRM technology that enables companies such as Universal Studios, NBC News Channel and Reuters Television to monitor and track the usage of news, advertising and programming content broadcast by television networks and stations around the world. Companies such as Teletrax and Verance are deploying systems to digitally watermark television footage and track its usage instantly, wherever it is broadcast. Companies like Activated Content are using forensic tracking to identify the source of digital audio files that are being distributed on file sharing Websites. This enables media companies and broadcast organizations to increase revenues and royalties. Rajan Samtani, Director, Sales & Marketing, ContentGuard: As the Dire ctor of Sales & Marketing at ContentGuard, Inc., Rajan Samtani is responsible for all market-facing activities, including marketing, PR and customer engagements. Before ContentGuard, Rajan was a founder of TheDealerNetwork, Inc., a B-2-B exchange in the personal computer industry. Prior to that he was VP of Sales and Marketing at REAL Software Systems, the leading application software vendor dealing with business rights and royalties in the entertainment, media, publishing and software markets. Rajan has a BA in Economics from UCLA and has taken several executive education courses at the Wharton school of Business.Chris Parkerson, Product Marketing, RSA Security: Chris Parkerson i s in the Product Marketing group at RSA Security responsible for market strategy for data privacy and rights management solutions. He is responsible for bringing RSA Securitys consumer Digital Rights Management (DRM) solutions to market and has a lot of expertise and knowledge in mobile technology and content management and security. Chris has a long history of managing and marketing innovative, leading-edge software products and has worked with several pioneering companies in content management and Web Services prior to joining RSA Security. Prior to joining RSA Security Chris worked for two Silicon Valley start-ups providing content management and integration solutions for health care, pharmaceutical, and financial services applications. In addition, Chris worked for eXcelon Corp. (now part of Progress Software) where he was responsible for bringing the first XML-based information management system, XIS, and first XML-based application development environment, Stylus Studio, to market. Chris is considered an expert in content management and Web Services having spoken at numerous industry events including the Jupiter Content Management Conference, Web Services Edge, XML/Web Services One, XML Europe, RSA Conference, and Progress Exchange. Chris graduated from Boston University with a BS in Computer Systems Engineering.David E. Leibowitz is Managing Partner of CH POTOMAC, a strategic ser vices company focused on the entertainment, media and technology industries. Mr. Leibowitz brings twenty-five years of experience in copyright, media, communications, and technology matters, as well as business issues facing the entertainment, new media, consumer electronics and information technology industries. Among other activities, Mr. Leibowitz serves on the Industry Advisory Boards of Peppercoin, 13 Colonies Software, and Neurok Optics. Earlier in his career, Mr. Leibowitz Co-Founded VERANCE and served as it Chairman. VERANCE offers innovative technology solutions to protect, manage, and monitor audio and audiovisual content, including broadcast monitoring and verification, copy protection and content management. Before that, Mr. Leibowitz was Executive Vice President and General Counsel of the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), responsible for business and legal issues facing the industry with particular emphasis on how to position the industry to utilize new physical and electronic format systems. During this period, Mr. Leibowitz chaired the worldwide recording industrys International Steering Committee on DVD Audio, the RIAA New Technology and Multimedia Committee and the RIAA Legal Committee. Prior to his work at the RIAA, Mr. Leibowitz was a partner in the Washington, D.C., law firm Wiley Rein & Fielding. Mr. Leibowitz also has served as Policy Planning Advisor to the Register of Copyrights for the U.S. Copyright Office. |
