| Tuesday, September 28 2:15 PM - 3:30 PM Track III: Entertainment Expands the Digital Home: Networking, Sharing and Protecting With the introduction and planning of the next generation of digital entertainment products from DVD video to audio into the home now in process, the emergence of the fully digital home is at hand. With the fully networked and integrated entertainment experience as the goal, content must be immediately available to the consumer in an easy as well as secure environment. In this session, we will begin the discussion of what the distribution of product in digital home will look like in the coming year as well as how the technologies of the future will enable entertainment in the digital home to emerge Jim Williams, VP, Television and Video Systems, Motion Picture Association of America, Inc. Peter Lee, VP Business Development New Technology, Disney Brian Lakamp, Senior Vice President, Technology, Sony Pictures Digital Policy Group Alan Citron, SVP, Marketing, Movielink Steve Canepa, Vice President, Media & Entertainment Industry, IBM Corp, Moderator Additional speakers to be announced Brian Lakamp is the Senior Vice President of Technology for Sony Pictur es Digital Policy Group SPEs Digital Policy Group was formed to coordinate digital policy across al Sony Pictures' businesses Brian focuses on copy protection issues, but he also investigates emerging and disruptive technologies such as watermark fingerprinting and digital rights management Brian also works on developing new business models around home networking to keep Sony Pictures ahead of the technological curve. Brian represents SPE in forums such as the Motion Pictures Association and the Copy Protection Technical Working Group. Brian also represents SPE in standards activities such as Digital Transmission Copy Protection (5C) and Advanced Access Content System (AACS) Jim C. Williams, Vice President, Television & Video Systems Standards, Motion Picture Association of America: In June 2002, Jim Williams joined the Motion Picture Association of Americas (MPAA) Office of Technology as Vice President, Television and Video Systems Standards. In this role, Jim leads the Associations participation in a broad range of television and video engineering standards-setting activities, and works proactively with the consumer electronics and computer industries to safeguard motion picture content in future products. Prior to joining the MPAA, Jim spent nearly 20 years with Hughes/DIRECTV, advancing from a skilled hardware, software and chip designer to a seasoned entertainment executive responsible for up to 300 employees and up to 70 development engineers. o In 1997, he led the business startup of DIRECTV Japan, the fastest full-scale Direct Broadcast Satellite startup in history. o Jim returned to the United States to lead the first nationwide HDTV service in 1998. o Starting in 1999, Jim led the DIRECTV set-top box development team. Jim holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of California, Los Angeles and a Master of Science degree in Computer Engineering from California State University, Long Beach. Jim holds 8 patents in digital television technologies with another 8 patents pending. Peter Lee is Vice-President, Business Development New Technology, at The Walt Disney Company in the Corporate Strategic Planning and Corporate New Technology Departments. His responsibilities include creating new businesses for Disney in digital content consumption/delivery and leading the companys unilateral content protection efforts for all Disney assets worldwide. He recently was a Media Industry Consultant, where he worked for Disney and Fox as an executive consultant in the area of video-on-demand. Prior to this he was the President/CEO of GeoVideo Networks (a Lucent Technology company), the COO/CTO of MyPotential (a well-being company chaired by Deepak Chopra), and CTO/co-founder of Hitplay Media (targeted ad insertion and streaming media content provider). The majority of his career was at IBM, where he was the Global Development Executive for Broadcast and Advertising. His roles at IBM included positions in the Watson Research Center, Federal Systems Division, Media Marketing, and the Interactive Television Group. He has an MS degree from USC and a BS from UCLA. He has eight patents granted and multiple patents pending in the areas of digital ad insertion, content distribution, and portable media players. Steve Canepa, Vice President, Media & Entertainment Industry, IBM Co rp.: As Vice President, Global Media and Entertainment Industry, Steve is responsible for IBMs overall results in the Entertainment, Publishing, Broadcast, Cable, Satellite, Sports and Advertising customer segments worldwide. He is also the founder of and a key leader in IBMs cross-industry Digital Media organization. Since its formation in 1994, Steve has guided the marketplace strategy and solution offerings for IBMs M&E Industry organization. He directs the worldwide sales of IBMs broad portfolio of hardware, software and services and is responsible for IBMs marketing activities, including crafting IBMs partnerships and business development efforts. During that time frame, IBMs overall business has grown dramatically, now the largest technology and services organization serving the M&E industry. Steve has a deep understanding of the key business imperatives facing firms in the M&E industry and has consulted extensively with many senior executives as they look to transform their organizations; providing enhanced profits by extending their brands; gaining better customer insights and by linking existing physical goods and licensing processes to digital initiatives. IBM recently launched a portfolio of cost optimization and revenue maximization solutions to address the profit pressures at work in todays highly competitive marketplace; and enhanced the digital media framework, addressing content value chain transformation as content creation, acquisition, management and distribution evolve to encompass digital technologies. Steve has delivered many keynote addresses at conferences: NAB, IBC, Broadcast Asia, Digital Hollywood..., and often speaks at M&E industry events, including: NEXPO, CES, iStudio, Content World... He regularly contributes to the press/media and has over 60 television appearances, including CNBC, CNNfn, C/NET, CBS, ABC, NBC...First joining IBM in January 1983, Steve has 20+ years of experience building and leading significant sales, marketing, strategy, consulting, solutions and systems integration organizations. He graduated from UCLA in 1982 with two bachelor of arts degrees: Economics and Political Science with Phi Eta Sigma honors. He received a MBA in 1990 from UCLA, with Beta Gamma Sigma and top study honors. He has participated in the Wharton School financial management program and the IBM Presidents class and International Presidents class at Harvard University. He has also participated in the Harvard executive session on Strategy formation. With a personal dedication to improving the health and education of children; Steve serves on the Board of Directors for both the Junior Achievement of Southern California and The Bogart Pediatric Cancer Fund. Steve and his wife, Marianne, live with their three children in Los Angeles, California. Marianne is a Supervising Producer of prime-time one-hour dramatic episodic television series. |
