Embracing the Connected Consumer - Entertainment and Technology - From the Broadband Home to the Mobile and Wi-Fi Universe
In the four years since the burst of the technology bubble, an amazing thing has happened, the technology industry has once again, perhaps more quietly this time, transformed the relationship of the consumer to communications, media, entertainment and technology. . Whether it’s a wirelessly connected home comprised of unlimited content via DTV and HDTV, PDAs, laptops, desktops PCs, a Set-Top connection, IM devices or telephony system; a broadband mobile device, a fully loaded media friendly car, a broadband workspace or public space, the consumer is connected all the time, sending or receiving information and content. In this session, we will explore what it means to create and enable that fully connected universe.

Peter Wolff, Program Manager, Partnerships and Initiatives, DaimlerChrysler Research and Technology: Peter is a Program Manager at DaimlerChrysler Research and Technology North America, located in Palo Alto. Peter is responsible for technology monitoring, analyzing trends in telematics technology and services, and the broader business environment for DaimlerChrysler's Chrysler Group and Mercedes Car Group. In this role, Peter also establishes and facilitates partnerships with Silicon Valley leaders and their companies to support the technology and feature strategies of the company. Peter joined DaimlerChrysler in 2000 as a project manager. Peter previously held several consulting positions in the telematics area. He is also a registered traffic engineer in the state of California. He earned a Bachelor degree in Mechanical Engineering from Georgia Tech.

Tom Flanagan, Director, Broadband Strategy, Broadband Communications Group, Texas Instruments: Tom Flanagan is Director, Broadband Strategy for Texas Instruments’ Broadband Communications Group. TI’s broadband communications business includes cable modems, digital subscriber line (DSL) modems, integrated access devices (IADs), Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) gateways, carrier infrastructure, and home and office wireless networking. Prior to this, Mr. Flanagan was Director, Business Development for Telogy Networks and Vice President Sales and Marketing for ADC Skyline. Mr. Flanagan also held various marketing, sales and business development positions during a 12 year career with Dynatech Communications. He holds a B.S. degree from James Madison University.




Craig Palmer, President and CEO, Gracenote: Joining Gracenote at the beginning of 2003, Palmer brings over 20 years of high technology experience working with successful business-to-business software companies, including Aspect Development, a leader in Supply Chain Management acquired by i2 Technologies in 2000 for over $9 billion; as well as Cadence Design Systems and Hewlett Packard. Prior to joining Gracenote, Palmer was Chairman, President and CEO of eWanted, an Internet startup company with an online consumer marketplace of over 750,000 users. From 1994 to 2000, Palmer held several vice president positions for Aspect Development, where he helped the company achieve a successful Initial Public Offering in 1996, and was instrumental in growing the company from $2 million in annual software revenues in 1994 to over $100 million in 2000. Aspect was acquired by i2, the leader in Supply Chain Management in 2000. From 1989 to 1994, Palmer held a range of senior marketing positions at Cadence Design Systems as it grew to become the leading Electronic Design Automation (EDA) vendor. Prior to Cadence, Palmer spent seven years in marketing at Hewlett Packard, working for the division that spearheaded the company’s launch into the Unix workstation marketplace. Palmer holds a BS in Electrical Engineering from the University of Wisconsin.

Brian Queen, Digital Media Solutions Manager, IBM Corp.: As Solution Manager, Brian has responsibility for sales of IBM’s strategic media solutions, including those enabling wireless distribution of digital content. In addition to selling offerings for telecommunications, media, and retail customers, Brian is leading IBM’s efforts in digital media distribution via public WiFi networks. These efforts include development of a WiFi solution strategy and supporting business models, formation of strategic alliances, and coordination of both IBM Development and IBM Business Partners. In his role, Brian also provides executive consulting services in business transformation and digital media distribution. Brian has held several marketing and sales management positions while at IBM, supporting customers in aerospace, defense, media and telecommunications industries. Prior to joining IBM, Brian was on the staff of Price Waterhouse where he had supervisory responsibility for several major audit and consulting clients. He also held engineering positions with the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Bell & Howell and Hyland Laboratories. Brian received a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering and an MBA from the University of Southern California. Brian is also a Certified Public Accountant, licensed in the State of California.

Peter Lee
is Vice-President, Business Development New Technology, at The Walt Disney Company in the Corporate Strategic Planning and Corporate New Technology Departments. His responsibilities include creating new businesses for Disney in digital content consumption/delivery and leading the company’s unilateral content protection efforts for all Disney assets worldwide. He recently was a Media Industry Consultant, where he worked for Disney and Fox as an executive consultant in the area of video-on-demand. Prior to this he was the President/CEO of GeoVideo Networks (a Lucent Technology company), the COO/CTO of MyPotential (a well-being company chaired by Deepak Chopra), and CTO/co-founder of Hitplay Media (targeted ad insertion and streaming media content provider). The majority of his career was at IBM, where he was the Global Development Executive for Broadcast and Advertising. His roles at IBM included positions in the Watson Research Center, Federal Systems Division, Media Marketing, and the Interactive Television Group. He has an MS degree from USC and a BS from UCLA. He has eight patents granted and multiple patents pending in the areas of digital ad insertion, content distribution, and portable media players.

Gigi Johnson, Executive Director, Entertainment and Media Management Institute, UCLA Anderson School of Management: Gigi Johnson is responsible for all elements of this 27-year-old endeavor, running all of the Institute's activities in new business model research, graduate education, and industry relations and events. Present work includes development of the Institute’s new Media 2010 Project, delving into the possible "futures" and interactions between new business models five years from now. In addition to her role in managing and developing the Institute, Ms. Johnson works with a wide variety of entertainment and media companies as a "business connector" on new technology ventures and business opportunities. She joined UCLA Anderson in 1999 as Director of its renowned Applied Management Research/Field Study Program, working with more than 300 organizations on strategic consulting engagements with over 1,000 students. In addition, she had helped launch UCLA Anderson’s Center for Management in the Information Economy as its acting Associate Director. Prior to UCLA Anderson, Ms. Johnson had been Managing Director at Bank of America, where she had financed major entertainment and media companies’ mergers and acquisitions for most of a decade. Previously, Ms. Johnson has held roles at Paramount Television, Burson-Marsteller Public Relations, and Ogilvy & Mather Advertising. Outside of UCLA Anderson, Ms. Johnson has been a principal in Maremel Partners, a boutique consulting firm, since 2001. Ms. Johnson received her MBA from the UCLA Anderson School of Management. She holds a Bachelor’s degree from USC’s School of Cinema-Television in Production, focusing on documentary television production and film marketing.
