DH2: Embracing the Connected Consumer – Entertainment and Technology – From the Broadband Home to the Mobile and Wi-Fi Universe
In the three years since the burst of the technology bubble, an amazing thing has happened, the technology industry has once again, perhaps more quietly this time, transformed the relationship of the consumer to communications, media, entertainment and technology. . Whether it’s a wirelessly connected home comprised of unlimited content via DTV and HDTV, PDAs, laptops, desktops PCs, a Set-Top connection, IM devices or telephony system; a broadband mobile device, a fully loaded media friendly car, a broadband workspace or public space, the consumer is connected all the time, sending or receiving information and content. In this session, we will explore what it means to create and enable that fully connected universe.

Kay Hinn is a Wireless Solutions Executive, in the Emerging Business Organization within IBM. In her role, she is responsible for wireless solutions sales across Media & Entertainment, Energy & Utilities and Telecommunications industry clients, for the central US. Kay joined IBM in 1999, with previous positions as a Client Services Principal for Motorola and the Industrial Sector. Prior to joining IBM, Ms. Hinn was a Senior Manager with Ernst & Young and a Business Manager/Consultant for entrepreneurial businesses, with 15 years of consulting, including international work experience. Her background has been with international manufacturing clients on key strategic transformation from vision carried through to multi-country implementations of people, process and technological solutions. Recognized strengths in leadership, business and information system strategic planning, business process re-engineering, global system implementation and e-business solutions. Ms. Hinn has a Bachelor of Science degree in Industrial and Management Systems Engineering from the University of Nebraska, Lincoln. She has continued to advance her education through graduate programs, teaching and has spoken at numerous international conferences. Ms. Hinn is past president of the Institute of Industrial Engineers and is a member of International Quality Forum, the Strategic Planning Group, National Association of Business Owners, member of Advisory Leadership Council for the Center for Whole Life at Cabrini Green and active in her local community in Chicago.

Ty Ahmad-Taylor, Director Strategic Planning, Comcast Online: Ty began his career at the New York Times in their graphics department, working in National and International news. While there, he covered the Waco, TX standoff, the Los Angeles riots, the Gulf War, the Oklahoma City bombing and other large news events from a visual perspective, using schematics, databases and cartography. This was done under the guidance of Tom Bodkin, the chief Art Director at the paper. In 1995, his last year at the paper, he wrote articles on the emerging Internet, special effects in cinema, and the video game industry. From the Times he moved West to join the @Home Network and the designer Roger Black. Ty became the Creative Director of @Home in 1997, and led their efforts to create next-generation portals for broadband and interactive television. After a year sabbatical in 2000, where he took cooking and French lessons, he returned to technology, working as the Chief Creative Architect for MetaTV, an iTV concern based in Mill Valley, CA, just north of San Francisco. While there, Ty generated user interface patents, and led the design of interactive television portals for Comcast, Cox, Echostar and other MSO and cable operators. He is currently the Director of Strategic Planning for Comcast Cable Corporation, working with their broadband group, their new media development group, and their cable set-top box group to develop interactive convergent products for Comcast customers. His mandate includes devising and executing Comcast's wireless (GPRS, UMTS and WiFi) strategy, gaming products, and interactive content and applications. Ty has over seven years of experience in designing for broadband, six years in interactive television, and 13 years in information design. He has lectured at AIGA conferences, HOW Design Conferences, Seybold Seminars, as well as the Poynter Institute for Journalism in St. Petersberg, Fla. Ty lives in New York City, though he is originally from the San Francisco Bay Area.

Arup Gupta, General Manager, Intel Consumer Electronics Group: Arup Gupta joined Intel as the CTO of the Broadband Products group in late 2002. Prior to that he was the VP of Engineering at two startups: Morphics Technology and Televersal Systems. Arup was the Engineering Director at Lucent Technologies, leading Silicon and systems teams for complete reference design platforms in Consumer Wireless and Bluetooth until 2000. Arup spent over 14 years at AT&T/Lucent Bell Labs in various design and management positions. During his career he and his team have produced over 20 commercially successful DSPs, mixed signal and RF ICs. Arup's interest lies in Architecture for high performance signal processing and Reconfigurable computing. Arup has a MSEE from Washington State University and a BTech (Hons) from IIT Kharagpur, India in addition to several Executive management courses from Harvard University and Wharton School of Business. He has 3 patents awarded on DSP architectures and several patents pending. Arup is a Senior member of IEEE and a member of Sigma Xi.


David McNamara is currently the Manager of Advanced Infotainment Systems as part of the Research and Advanced Engineering Activity of the Ford Motor Company. His charter is to develop new Infotainment features and functions that provide superior customer value and enhance Brand differentiation. Prior to this assignment from 1995 – 2002 CY, he was the Manager of Multimedia Systems, part of the Electrical/Electronic Systems Engineering Office, Research and Vehicle Technology (R&VT). He was responsible for the production development of the following Multimedia Systems for the Lincoln, Mercury, and Ford Brands: Audio and audiophile systems; Family Entertainment systems; Navigation Systems McNamara joined Ford in 1973 as a manufacturing engineer. His varied engineering assignments have provided product development and management experience in powertrain sensors, electronic instrumentation/displays, multiplex, voice control and instrument panel/body subsystem electronic architecture. He launched Ford's first navigation systems for European applications on the Mondeo for the 1996MY. Other new product launch achievements include the design and development of the first North American reversing aid system, which has seen broad applications across Ford vehicles starting in 2000MY. Also, he co-lead the engineering team with Jaguar that launched the first Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) system in Europe. His engineering team members received the 2000CY Henry Ford Technology Innovation Award as recognition of their achievements. A more recent achievement is the development of the cross-vehicle navigation system (for LS, Navigator, Aviator and Towncar) and the partnership with THX to introduce a new premier audiophile system for the 2003-4 CY Lincolns. Dave McNamara received his Bachelors of Science in Electrical Engineering for the University of Michigan and his Masters Degree in solid-state physics from the University of Florida. He holds five patents in the areas of prognostics, navigation and security systems. Dave McNamara is married and has two sons. He enjoys reading, hunting, golf and coaching youth sports.

Dave Goldberg, Vice President & General Manager, Music, Yahoo, Inc.: Dave B. Goldberg, Co-Founder of LAUNCH, serves as the company’s CEO and will act as General Manager of Yahoo! Music since the acquisition of LAUNCH by Yahoo! Inc. in August 2001. Since its inception in 1994, Mr. Goldberg has spearheaded LAUNCH’s vision to help music fans connect with their favorite artists and discover new music through a variety of interactive mediums. Under his leadership, LAUNCH has developed into one of the leading entertainment brands and LAUNCH.com has become one of the web’s premier music destination sites. Prior to founding LAUNCH, Mr. Goldberg was Director of Marketing Strategy and New Business Development at Capitol Records in Los Angeles, California. While in this position, Mr. Goldberg was responsible for the development of new multimedia distribution methods and the development of alternative channels through which music and new artists could be effectively marketed to consumers. Before Capitol, Mr. Goldberg worked as a management consultant at Bain & Co., a prominent strategic consulting firm. Mr. Goldberg graduated magna cum laude from Harvard University with a B.A. in History and Government. Mr. Goldberg currently serves on the board of directors for LivePlanet and is a member of N.A.R.A.S (National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences) and the Digital Coast Roundtable.

Mike Katz is a senior vice president with Booz Allen Hamilton, Inc., specializing in media and entertainment. He has over twenty-five years of consulting experience at Booz Allen. As an industry expert in media and entertainment, Mike has helped clients with issues across technology, operations and strategy. As a functional expert in technology and e-Business, he has also worked across a broad range of industries. Mike has closely followed developments in digital media, including digital cinema, digital music, and digital photography. He has examined the impact and likely evolution of home networking and its convergence with consumer electronics and personal computing. He has also analyzed business models and digital rights management strategies for digital music subscription services, as well as video on demand. In addition, Mike recently published a report on potential scenarios for roll out of digital cinema technology and its potential impact on the theatrical venue. Mike has worked extensively in broadcast television and cable, primarily in advertising sales, traffic, revenue management, and information technology. He also has extensive experience in music, working with labels, distribution, retailers/e-tailers and clubs. This experience has included performance improvement, restructuring, marketing analytics, distribution and pricing strategy and royalties. Mike has helped clients deal with a broad spectrum of sales and marketing issues, ranging from product and market strategy to field sales automation. This work has encompassed pricing, product and account profitability, channel strategy, sales effectiveness, database marketing, direct marketing and e-business customer acquisition and retention. He has extensive experience with electronic products and has helped clients deal with transition issues as they migrated products from print to print/online offerings. Working as a functional expert in Information Technology and eBusiness, Mike has worked with clients in telecommunications, computer hardware and software, online services, consumer products, retail, aerospace and financial services. Mike speaks regularly to the press on digital entertainment issues. Recently, he appeared on ABC News, CNBC and CNNfn and has been quoted in the Los Angeles Times, CIO Magazine, Information Week and Investor’s Business Daily, among others. He has also been published in strategy+business magazine. Mike has a BS in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science and an MBA in Management Science and Finance from Columbia University.
