DH3: Beyond Movies: Television On Demand – New Revenue Generating Opportunities from the Syndication and Delivery of On-demand Content
Movies may have been the driver in the pay TV universe, but with the arrival of on-demand television, an entirely new set of programming and viewing concepts may be on the verge of breaking through in the marketplace. This panel will explore the opportunity for syndicators, networks, and cable operators to generate incremental revenue through the delivery of on-demand content other than movies. The panelists will discuss their views on how operators, networks and syndicators can work together to expand the revenue pie by offering more compelling content when consumers without cannibalizing existing revenue streams.

Jeffrey Binder is a Broadbus founder and serves as chairman of the board and chief executive officer. He was previously CEO of Magic Music, where he managed development of three generations of DRAM based server technology, overseeing the overall operations of the company from start-up to 30%+ market-share in just two years. He was formerly founding CEO of the Leading Golf Companies, successfully delivering frequency marketing client/server technology and systems in partnership with the top 500 golf courses in the US and major airlines, including American Airlines and TWA. Binder is a named inventor to several Broadbus patents and continues to collaborate and innovate with the Broadbus team. He has authored key vision documents published in major industry journals regarding television-on-demand (TOD®), and frequently presents at major audio and cable industry events. In addition, he serves on the boards of Greater Chicago Bank (a regional FDIC Banking), and FastenerOasis, Inc., (the e-commerce arm of one of the largest fastener distributors in the US). He is a member of NCTA, CTAM, SCTE and has been a member of the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences since 1988.

Mary Coller, Senior Vice President, General Manager, SoapCity, Sony Pictures Digital Network’s: In the four years that Mary Coller has been at the helm of Sony Pictures Digital Network’s SoapCity (www.soapcity.com), her leadership has been instrumental in making SoapCity the Internet’s foremost distributor of content on soap operas, delivering up-to-the-minute news, exclusive coverage and serving as the home of official show sites. She has played a pivotal role in syndicating versions of SoapCity’s soap content to media giants such as AOL Time-Warner and Yahoo! Inc. Last year, Ms. Coller oversaw the launch of SoapCity’s download service, a service that allows broadband consumers the opportunity to download to their PC current-day soap opera episodes commercially uninterrupted. Current offerings from SoapCity’s download service include "The Young & the Restless," "Days of our Lives" and "As the World Turns." Before joining Sony Pictures Digital Networks, Ms. Coller was vice president and co-founder of Beatnik Inc., an interactive audio software and music development company she started with musician Thomas Dolby. Ms. Coller was responsible for taking the company through creative concept, to raising venture capital, and onto maintaining the day-to-day operations, finance, marketing, publicity and staff. In addition, she developed, negotiated and oversaw all business relationships for Beatnik, including deals with such major technology companies as Netscape, Microsoft’s WebTV, Sun Microsystems and others. Prior to Beatnik, Ms. Coller managed the careers of musicians and artists as the owner of Mary Coller Management, a personal management company she established in 1990. Aditya Kishore is an analyst for the Yankee Group’s Media and Entertainment Strategies Planning Service. His responsibilities include research and analysis for the converging media and entertainment products and services among consumers. Mr. Kishore leads The Yankee Group’s coverage of video services delivered via cable, satellite and over-the-air broadcast, and includes emerging services such as video-on-demand (VOD), personal video recorders (PVR), enhanced and interactive television, digital broadcasting and HDTV, as well as the subscription, advertising and other revenue opportunities resulting from these developments for cable, broadcast and satellite companies. Mr. Kishore has spoken at numerous cable and other media industry events and is widely quoted in leading business and consumer publications such as The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times and Businessweek. Mr. Kishore has spent nearly ten years in the media industry, beginning his career in television news in 1994. He then spent three years in advertising, developing strategic brand communication and tactical/promotional initiatives for a range of leading consumer brands including Nestle, Samsung and McDonald’s. Over the next two years, Mr. Kishore developed a number of digital video and web projects for various New England broadcast stations and independent producers. This includedinteractive video projects with the PBS network series, Frontline. Prior to the Yankee Group, Mr. Kishore spent a year developing brand and market strategies for start-up interactive media companies. Mr. Kishore holds a Bachelor’s degree with Honors in economics from Delhi University, India, and a Master’s degree in media from Emerson College, Boston.

Gunjan Bhow is Senior Product Manager for the Microsoft TV Division at Microsoft Corporation. In this role, Bhow manages market research, product strategy and roll-out plans for Microsoft’s digital TV software platform for network operators.
As Senior Product Manager, Bhow leads strategic planning aspects of the digital TV platform at Microsoft TV – with particular focus on the emergence of on-demand technologies including VOD and DVR. A veteran of the digital media space, Bhow enjoys a unique and global perspective on digital media, spanning technology, business and long-term trends in digital video. As a technologist, Bhow did pioneering work in digital video and 3D animation beginning at Corel Corporation in 1992 – developing and launching products covering graphical illustration, video editing and playback on the PC., such as Micrografx Designer, PhotoMagic, CrystalGraphics Flying Fonts, and 3D Vortex. He was responsible for launching some of the world’s first consumer digital video applications in partnership with companies including Sony and Microsoft, including 3D Impact for Windows 95. Leveraging his technology passion on the business side, Bhow led strategic venture capital investments at Telesystem, a global broadband company with carrier holdings in 40 countries. His focus was on telecom carriers around the world investing in emerging digital media technologies, including Deutsche Telekom, British Telecom, France Telecom, and Singapore Telecom. Most recently, Bhow led the product management team in charge of developing the next generation of visual authoring tools division at Oracle Corporation – covering web animation and digital media. Bhow has spoken at conferences worldwide – including CES, Comdex, SIGGRAPH, TieCon India, Videomaker Expo, and Arts Alliance Summit in London - covering digital media topics ranging from distribution technologies, consumer user-interface, and enhanced content. Bhow holds an MBA from Harvard Business School and a bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science from University of California at Berkeley. He has founded a computer literacy non-profit institute in India, and is also a visiting scholar at Nirma Institute of Management, a leading graduate business school India.

Neil Goldberg, SVP of Programming, TVN: Neil Goldberg is a 16-year veteran of the entertainment industry. For the past 7 years he has served in a senior management capacity for multi-million dollar businesses, and has overseen production and development for major film and television companies. Currently, Goldberg is Senior Vice President of Programming at TVN Entertainment, where he oversees the creation, development, management and programming of over 40 linear and video-on-demand networks. During the past year, Goldberg created and launched Event TV, Telenuestros, and KIDS Unlimited, the first non-premium cable subscription packages available on-demand, which MSO’s have launched in over 1.3 million homes. Additionally, Goldberg recently completed numerous long-term deals with Paramount, MGM, Sony, Universal, Fox Cable Networks and more, turning TVN into the largest provider of video-on-demand content in North America. Goldberg has also been instrumental in securing distribution deals with major cable operators including, Comcast, Charter, and Insight. As part of the executive management team, Goldberg develops corporate level strategies, and is leading the company’s negotiations with broadcast networks for time-shifted viewing of their programming. Goldberg comes to TVN from DIVA, the first commercially deployed VOD company in the U.S., where he was responsible for all entertainment programming. While there, Goldberg launched the nations first premium subscription-on-demand packages: Starz, HBO and Showtime on demand, which are now available in over 8 million homes. Goldberg was part of the executive management team, which raised over $450 million dollars from leading financial institutions including Goldman Sachs and Merrill Lynch. Prior to joining DIVA in 1997, Goldberg was Vice President of Witt-Thomas Films, overseeing all aspects of the company’s development and production activities. Notably, he oversaw script development on the critically acclaimed movie Three Kings, starring George Clooney. Embracing his creative sensibilities, Witt-Thomas also had a first look deal with Goldberg for his own screenplays. Previously, Goldberg was Director of Worldwide Acquisitions for Warner Bros. In that capacity, he acquired over two hundred films for international and domestic video, television, and theatrical distribution. He is most proud of securing the domestic rights to Victor Hugo’s Les Miserables. Goldberg got his start in filmed entertainment as Director of Business Affairs at Trans Atlantic Entertainment, where he also served as Production Executive. A graduate of the University of Maryland, Goldberg is also a produced film and television writer. Born and raised in Philadelphia, Goldberg currently resides in Los Angeles with his wife and two children.

Todd Walker , Senior Vice President & General Manager, TV Guide Interactive: As senior vice president and general manager of TV Guide Interactive, Todd Walker is responsible for managing the all aspects of the cable industry’s leading interactive program guide service. Mr. Walker oversees the engineering and development, product development, strategic planning, product design, and operations functions for TV Guide Interactive. Mr. Walker joined TV Guide in 1993 as the division controller for TV Guide Networks (formerly Prevue Networks). He has held various positions in the company, ranging from the head of finance and administration to various product and division start-up roles, including the formation of TV Guide Online, TV Guide Data Services and most recently TV Guide Interactive. His contributions were key to the development of TV Guide Network’s digital file server network, which is used to distribute TV Guide Channel content to over 3,000 cable head ends. Prior to joining TV Guide, Mr. Walker held various finance positions in the energy and transportation industries, including Mapco Coal, where he was manager of Finance and Planning, and American Airlines’ Sabre Computer Services where he held various financial roles with a focus on communications and engineering. A graduate of Oklahoma Christian University with a degree in accounting, Mr. Walker also has an M.B.A in Finance from Southern Methodist University. He is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and the Oklahoma Society of CPAs. He has served on several civic committees, including as a division team leader for the Tulsa Area United Way annual fund-raising campaign.

Todd Tarpley is President of Tarpley Media, a consultancy specializing in strategic planning for media and entertainment clients. Mr. Tarpley has served as Vice President, Interactive Media, for both Bravo Networks and A&E Networks, establishing the division at A&E and launching one of the industry's most successful ecommerce initiatives. He served on the core launch team of The History Channel, leading the network's research and planning efforts through its development and successful launch. He spent two years at Yale's Family Television Research Center conducting primary research on the impact of media on children. He subsequently contributed to a Congressional report, "A Role for Television in the Enhancement of Children's Readiness to Learn," and has since authored chapters of two textbooks, "The Faces of Televisual Media" (2003) and "Handbook of Children and the Media" (2001). Mr. Tarpley began his career as an intern for "Late Night With David Letterman" on NBC, followed by three years in production roles for programs on HBO, ABC, NBC, and Lifetime. He holds an MBA from Yale, an MA from the University of Iowa, and a BFA in Film from NYU's Tisch School of the Arts.
