DH17: DRM Technology Innovation: Content Integrity in Music, Film and Mobile
Content is what the entertainment and media industry produce, and the viability of the industry’s future rests on its ability to manage its content and control its distribution while at the same time making it available to an ever larger customer base. And that is the job of the DRM technology industry, to make the film, music and mobile technology delivery systems safe for mass use. In this session, we will explore, from the point of view of the technology companies, the possibilities and potential of DRM in the evolving content landscape. From CDs and DVDs to broadband and wireless delivery, DRM and content protection represents the bottom line of the future of our industries.

Steve Canepa, Vice President, Media & Entertainment Industry, IBM Corp.: As Vice President, Global Media and Entertainment Industry, Steve is responsible for IBM’s overall results in the Entertainment, Publishing, Broadcast, Cable, Satellite, Sports and Advertising customer segments worldwide. He is also the founder of and a key leader in IBM’s cross-industry Digital Media organization. Since its formation in 1994, Steve has guided the marketplace strategy and solution offerings for IBM’s M&E Industry organization. He directs the worldwide sales of IBM’s broad portfolio of hardware, software and services and is responsible for IBM’s marketing activities, including crafting IBM’s partnerships and business development efforts. During that time frame, IBM’s overall business has grown dramatically, now the largest technology and services organization serving the M&E industry. Steve has a deep understanding of the key business imperatives facing firms in the M&E industry and has consulted extensively with many senior executives as they look to transform their organizations; providing enhanced profits by extending their brands; gaining better customer insights and by linking existing physical goods and licensing processes to digital initiatives. IBM recently launched a portfolio of cost optimization and revenue maximization solutions to address the profit pressures at work in today’s highly competitive marketplace; and enhanced the digital media framework, addressing content value chain transformation as content creation, acquisition, management and distribution evolve to encompass digital technologies. Steve has delivered many keynote addresses at conferences: NAB, IBC, Broadcast Asia, Digital Hollywood..., and often speaks at M&E industry events, including: NEXPO, CES, iStudio, Content World... He regularly contributes to the press/media and has over 60 television appearances, including CNBC, CNNfn, C/NET, CBS, ABC, NBC...First joining IBM in January 1983, Steve has 20+ years of experience building and leading significant sales, marketing, strategy, consulting, solutions and systems integration organizations. He graduated from UCLA in 1982 with two bachelor of arts degrees: Economics and Political Science with Phi Eta Sigma honors. He received a MBA in 1990 from UCLA, with Beta Gamma Sigma and top study honors. He has participated in the Wharton School financial management program and the IBM President’s class and International President’s class at Harvard University. He has also participated in the Harvard executive session on Strategy formation. With a personal dedication to improving the health and education of children; Steve serves on the Board of Directors for both the Junior Achievement of Southern California and The Bogart Pediatric Cancer Fund. Steve and his wife, Marianne, live with their three children in Los Angeles, California. Marianne is a Supervising Producer of prime-time one-hour dramatic episodic television series’.

Pallavi Shah, Worldwide Market Segment Manager Digital Distribution, Sun Microsystems: Pallavi Shah is responsible for recruiting and managing strategic partners for Sun in the streaming and rich media infrastructure market. Since joining Sun in 1995, she has been involved in bringing key components of Sun's advanced digital media technology to market. She chaired ISO's MPEG4-Java standards group and formed multi-company alliances to promote Java and protect Sun's strategic interests. Prior to Sun, Ms Shah was with the Sarnoff Corporation (RCA research lab). She represented the HDTV Grand Alliance during the development of HDTV and pioneered the world's first E-Commerce application of interactive HDTV at NAB-95. She has served as a panelist/speaker at several industry conferences, published papers and has several pending patents. She hold M.S. from Utah State University.

Mike Bailey, Vice President, Sales, Entriq: As Vice President, Sales for Entriq, Mike Bailey is responsible for securing business for the company with content providers, service operators and network providers. He has extensive experience in working with entertainment produc ers and distributors on broadband applications of their content. Prior to joining the company in 2002, Bailey was Vice President of Programming for Aerocast, Inc., a joint venture between Motorola and Liberty Media focused on broadband streaming video services related to video quality and Digital Rights Management (DRM). In this position, he held senior responsibility for all video content strategy, licensing, acquisition, presentation and scheduling for a broadband footprint in excess of one million high-speed customers. Prior to this, Bailey was Vice President of Worldwide Programming for Liberty Media's On Command Corporation. On Command is the world's largest provider of entertainment and business services to the hotel industry. He was responsible for all of the company's revenue generating product lines, which included first-run feature films, short-form content, video games and Internet access. He started his career at NTN Communications, where he served as Director of Sales and assisted in the development of iTV applications and real-time, multi-player game products. Bailey earned his MBA from the University of San Diego, and his BA in Telecommunications and Film from San Diego State University.
Christopher Levy, CEO & President, BuyDRM.com: Christopher Levy has several years of experience in the Rights Management Industry and is a noted industry expert on DRM and Rights Management at large. He is currently the CEO and President of BuyDRM.com, a new marketplace connecting buyers and sellers of Rights Management Services. He is the former Founder and President of EmpireDRM (ClearKey Solutions), a start up service provider in San Diego, California and a founder and CTO of DRM Networks a DRM Service Provider in Tempe AZ. After founding ClickHear Productions in 1995 and later leading the sale of the company to CMGi, Levy invented and led to market "streamOS", the industry's first Streaming Media Overlay System delivering Streaming Media across multiple Content Delivery Networks. streamOS was used by MSN to webcast Madonna to 9 Million viewers making it the largest webcast in history. Levy has also worked for a top-shelf list of streaming media clients including Interscope Records, IslandDefJam Records, Anheuser-Busch, NFL Films, Grand Royal Records, The Museum of Television and Radio, Microsoft, Intel and others. Levy is a featured industry writer and speaker and has been featured in print and online with ABCNews.com, StreamingMedia.com, eContent Magazine, Klixxx Magazine, and others and has spoken at NAB, NATPE, Streaming Media East and West, Digital Hollywood, Content World and Internext.

Bruce Davis, chairman and CEO, Digimarc Corp.: Bruce Davis has served as Digimarc's chief executive officer and director since December 1997 and was elected chairman in May 2002. He also held the title of president from December 1997 through May 2001. Before joining Digimarc, Mr. Davis was president of Prevue Networks, Inc., the leading supplier of electronic program guides and program promotion services to the cable and satellite television markets. Prior to that, he founded and served as president of TV Guide On Screen, a joint venture of News Corporation and TCI that supplied electronic program guides and navigational software for the cable television market, and was merged with Prevue Networks. A pioneer in the development of the video game industry, Mr. Davis served as chairman and CEO of Activision, and served five years as a member of the Software Publishers Association board of directors before beginning his pioneering work in TV program guide development. The holder of more than 20 patents, Mr. Davis is well acquainted with the need to protect intellectual property. Mr. Davis started his career as an intellectual property attorney. He holds a JD from Columbia University, and both a BS in accounting and psychology and an MA in criminal justice from the State University of New York at Albany.

Bruce Gitlin, Vice President, Business Development, ContentGuard: Bruce Gitlin's responsibilities include all business development, marketing and sales. Prior to ContentGuard Gitlin was Director, Strategic Alliances at Xerox where he was responsible for establishing alliances with key computer industry leaders. At Xerox, his responsibilities included VP Strategy for the Office Systems Division and for the Office Products Division, VP and General Manager Personal Computer Division, and a range of positions in marketing, international planning, product development, solutions development and program management.










David E. Leibowitz is Managing Partner of CH POTOMAC, a strategic services company focused on the entertainment, media and technology industries. Mr. Leibowitz brings twenty-five years of experience in copyright, media, communications, and technology matters, as well as business issues facing the entertainment, new media, consumer electronics and information technology industries. Among other activities, Mr. Leibowitz serves on the Industry Advisory Boards of Peppercoin, 13 Colonies Software, and Neurok Optics. Earlier in his career, Mr. Leibowitz Co-Founded VERANCE and served as it Chairman. VERANCE offers innovative technology solutions to protect, manage, and monitor audio and audiovisual content, including broadcast monitoring and verification, copy protection and content management. Before that, Mr. Leibowitz was Executive Vice President and General Counsel of the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), responsible for business and legal issues facing the industry with particular emphasis on how to position the industry to utilize new physical and electronic format systems. During this period, Mr. Leibowitz chaired the worldwide recording industry’s International Steering Committee on DVD Audio, the RIAA New Technology and Multimedia Committee and the RIAA Legal Committee. Prior to his work at the RIAA, Mr. Leibowitz was a partner in the Washington, D.C., law firm Wiley Rein & Fielding. Mr. Leibowitz also has served as Policy Planning Advisor to the Register of Copyrights for the U.S. Copyright Office.
