DH21: Program Guides in DTV and Interactive TV
As DTV emerges in the American home as the window to the entertainment universe, the importance of the "Programming Guide" becomes that much more of a challenge. Programming guides are evolving from simple listing and next stage information service and is entering the age of "smart guides" or interfaces that will provide not only content, but also interactive services and windows to a world of communications, commerce as well as content. As the power of the set-top box increases, so does the role of the program guide. In this session, we will hear from the innovators in this growing industry sector.

Jack Perry, President & CEO, Decisionmark: Jack Perry joined the Company in 1996 as its president and chief executive officer. Mr. Perry is a recognized software industry veteran known for his work with high-growth, technology-based companies such as Prisma Software, Campbell Services, Powercore, CE Software, and Interactive Resources. He is also a respected figure inside the beltway for having educated legislators and members of the FCC on digital and satellite broadcast issues. Mr. Perry was the lead inventor in the development of the Company's now patented Geneva technology, a technology allowing the household determination of broadcast signal area coverage. Geneva is the basis for several the Company innovations, including TitanTV.com. Mr. Perry has continued to push the Company to the edge of technological broadcast advancements. A second patent was awarded to the Company under his leadership for its Air-to-Web Broadcast Replication (AWBR) technology. The Company AWBR technology is the key to solving issues related to Internet streaming of local content. A resident of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Mr. Perry earned a Bachelor of Liberal Arts degree from the University of Iowa.

Alison Green, VP Business Development, Gist Interactive Guides: As the VP of Business Development at Gist, Ms. Green has helped establish Gist as one of the leading developers of iTV guide applications. Through her efforts, Gist has achieved premiere partnership status with Liberate and Open-TV, obtained a deployment deal with the Digeo interactive television service for its TV Mag application and demonstrated its products at the largest iTV conventions around the world in partnership with the industry’s biggest players including Liberate, Open-TV, nCube, Motorola and Starz/Encore. Ms. Green’s expertise includes interactive television business models, content and functionality with the largest consumer impact and chance for financial return, and the potential for VOD and SVOD systems. Ms. Green has been with Gist since March 2000. Before Gist, Ms. Green was the Director of Business Development at GT Interactive Software where she was responsible for formulating and implementing effective business strategies and policy, including relationships with software studios and developers. Prior to that, Ms. Green was Senior Vice President of Business and Legal Affairs for The Film Office, a Paris-based division of Groupe Hachette.

M3 Sweatt is director, business development, North America, for the Microsoft TV Group at Microsoft Corporation. He is responsible for developing and strengthening the platform group’s relationships with leading network operators in the United States and Canada. Sweatt joined Microsoft in February 2001, bringing more than 10 years' experience working for companies specializing in cutting-edge entertainment and TV technologies. Most recently, Sweatt led the business development team at ReplayTV, where he was responsible for worldwide alliances and partnerships. Before joining ReplayTV in 2000, Sweatt held a number of high-profile positions at media and TV technology companies, including Pinnacle Systems Inc., where he was director of the desktop products group. Before that, Sweatt held senior management positions at AutoDesk Inc., The 3DO Co. and Digidesign, a division of Avid Technology Inc.


Jay Fehnel, Director of Business Development/Tribune Media Services: Jay Fehnel was named Director of Business Development for Tribune Media Services (TMS) in June, 1998. In that role he identifies and pursues growth opportunities for TMS, through internal start-ups, partnerships, investments and acquisitions. In addition, he manages the company’s strategic and action planning process. Most recently, Fehnel played a key role in the development of TMS’ business plan to offer electronic program guides (EPGs) to the cable TV industry. He also developed the company’s plan for entering the movie data and advertising business. Fehnel evaluates venture investments for TMS, and negotiated the company’s investment in Mercury Mail (now Exactis.com), a pioneering e-mail marketing company. In 1997-98, Fehnel served as Senior Manager of Business Development. For three years beginning in 1994, Fehnel served as General Manager of TMS Electronic Information Services. In that capacity he managed the editorial, marketing and customer service functions for Voice News Network, an audio syndication service with 250 affiliates. He also helped launch WebPoint, the first syndicated content service for the Web. In addition, Jay managed the company’s business relationships with America Online, Apple Online Services, and other interactive media companies. Fehnel joined TMS in 1992 as a Business Development Analyst. In that role, he led the team that launched US/Express, a weekly entertainment publication, into national syndication. Fehnel is a graduate of the Kellogg Graduate School of Management at Northwestern University and of Purdue University, where he majored in journalism and broadcasting. He previously worked in marketing for NBC and Katz Television in New York, and the Walt Disney Company in Burbank.

Neil McGinness, is Vice President for National Lampoon, known worldwide as a leading film and entertainment brand. At National Lampoon, McGinness develops entertainment-based strategic marketing programs through National Lampoon properties in film, television, radio, publishing, online, and on-campus through its in-dorm college cable television network. Before joining National Lampoon, Mr. McGinness spent 10 years working for Lorne Michaels' company, Broadway Video Entertainment eventually becoming Vice President for Marketing & Business Development. His clients have included Coca-Cola, MTV, Nokia, Showtime Networks, Philips Electronics, SONY, TDK, AOL and Airwalk Shoes. He holds a master's degree from NYU's Institute of Film and Television (Tisch School) and received a bachelor's degree from Georgetown University

Gil Dudkiewicz, founder & President, MyDTV: Gil Dudkiewicz serves as founder and president of MyDTV. With over 10 years of management and organizational experience, Dudkiewicz is the driving force behind the vision of MyDTV and is responsible for the company’s daily operations. Dudkiewicz has several years of international experience in consulting project management, marketing, and business development, providing technology counsel for media companies, including Universal Studios, and several top-ranked television stations. He was previously the director of marketing and business development at Tefen USA, an industrial engineering and system analysis firm, were he established the company’s media practice. Prior to that, Dudkiewicz was a captain in the Israeli Air force. He holds a B.Sc. in Engineering from the Technion-Israel, and an M.B.A. from the Haas School of Business at the University of California at Berkeley.
