| Saturday, January 7 10:30 AM - 11:30 AM Session A - DH13: Entertainment Expands the Digital Home: Networking, Sharing and Protecting With the introduction and planning of the next generation of digital entertainment products from DVD video to audio into the home now in process, the emergence of the fully digital home is at hand. With the fully networked and integrated entertainment experience as the goal, content must be immediately available to the consumer in an easy as well as secure environment. In this session, we will begin the discussion of what the distribution of product in digital home will look like in the coming year as well as how the technologies of the future will enable entertainment in the digital home to emerge. David E. Leibowitz, Managing Partner, CH Potomac, Moderator Phil Corman is director of worldwide partner development for the Microsoft TV Division at Microsoft Corporation. In this capacity, Corman is responsible for increasing the value of Microsoft TVs solutions by driving strategic relationships with key industry partners. Corman is responsible for developing strategic worldwide partnerships for Microsoft TV. These partnerships include companies such as encoding, server, storage and billing/operations support systems (B/OSS) providers, consumer electronics (CE) and original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), silicon suppliers, independent software and TV application providers, and systems integrators. Corman is also responsible for developing an IPTV content partner ecosystem including studios, broadcasters, post production houses, content and asset management companies, etc. Prior to joining Microsoft in March 2001, Corman served as general manager of interactive digital systems at Mitsubishi Electronics America. In this capacity, Corman established and led the entire division including product marketing, sales and technical directors. In addition, he launched Mitsubishis commercial video-on-demand (VOD) business unit, which delivered VOD and Internet browsing over the TV to hotels, cruise ships and hospitals. Prior to Mitsubishi, Corman spent 15 years in the computing industry with Digital Equipment Corporation (now Hewlett-Packard). Corman is a member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), the Cable & Telecommunications Association for Marketing (CTAM) and the Society of Cable Telecommunications Engineers (SCTE). He holds a Bachelors of Science degree in mathematics from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. Udo Eberlein joined Nero, Inc. in May 2001 as Founder and President , and successfully launched Nero products in North America, transforming the brand from a CD/DVD burning application into a premier digital media solution. Nero product is now ranked within the top 3 software solutions nationwide. Prior to Nero, Mr. Eberlein was an Executive at ABX Logistics where he oversaw product development, sales and marketing. Mr. Eberlein is a multilingual professional with work experience in Europe, Asia and the USA. He obtained a Masters in Logistics and Business Administration from Academy of Business in Germany. Nero provides state-of-the-art software solutions for the global digital media market. Since the company was founded in 1995, its products have established a loyal clientele of more than 180 million users throughout the world. Nero offers the industrys most reliable CD/DVD-software applications. Its award-winning flagship product, Nero 6, includes all the applications and functionalities needed in the digital media field. Other Nero products include the MPEG 4 based audio/video technology - Nero Digital, the simple and complete photo solution - Nero PhotoShow Elite, and SIPPS and SIPPSTAR PBX, which provide voice-over IP solutions for private and business customers.Doug Glen, Chief Marketing Office, Zetera Corporation: Doug Gl en has over twenty-five years of operating experience as a technology, media and entertainment operating executive, followed by several years experience as a venture capitalist. Most recently, Glen has been a managing partner in ProVen Private Equity, a London-based venture capital firm specializing in media and entertainment investments. From 1994 through 1999, Glen was senior vice president, chief strategy officer, for toymaker Mattel. While at Mattel, Glen directed the formation of the companys girls software division, which created some of the best-selling entertainment software titles of all time, building on the companys flagship Barbie brand. He was also responsible for the Intel-Mattel joint venture which produced high tech toys under the Intel Play brand. Prior to Mattel, Glen was group vice president, strategic planning and business development at Sega of America. There he was responsible for the companys product management, licensing, and marketing. Also at Sega, he formed Sega Channel, a joint venture with Time-Warner and TCI, which delivered video games over cable television. Before then, Glen was general manager of Lucasarts Entertainment, the entertainment software division of George Lucas film company. There, he supervised the development and marketing of best-selling computer and video games, which extended Lucas properties such as Star Wars, Indiana Jones, and Young Indiana Jones. Previously, Glen founded an advertising agency, which was sold to DArcy Masius Benton & Bowles, where he remained for the next five years, supervising many of the agencys media and entertainment accounts. Glen completed his undergraduate studies at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and holds an MBA and PhD from Somerset University.Von Johnson is Vice President, Strategic Planning for Thoms ons Technology division, and will make a fine addition to your panel. Von has over twenty years experience in the entertainment industry including electronic distribution, language dubbing, worldwide logistics and protocols, production and post production, technical services, project management, systems development and implementation, business and systems integration. He has held key strategic and operations positions at The Walt Disney Company, Universal Television Distribution and Turner Broadcasting. His career also includes break-through technology developments in video-on-demand and production-based digital distribution solutions. Von earned his MBA at Woodbury University, where he teaches a series of courses on production financing, licensing and trends in distribution.Ladd Wardani is President of the Multimedia over Coax Alliance (M oCA), and VP Business Development, Co-Founder of Entropic Communications. Mr. Wardani has over 20 years of experience in the development of communications systems and products over satellite, coaxial cable, wireline and wireless, from silicon solutions to box product, terminals and full networks. Prior to co-founding Entropic in January 2001, he did two years of independent contracting on home networking and broadband wireless chipset developments. Between 1991 and 1999, Mr. Wardani did technical marketing, business development, and led the engineering development of the set-top box physical layer ICs and initial cable modem efforts that became Conexant Systems Digital Infotainment Division and ComStream Corporation products. Prior to serving as director of engineering at ComStream, Mr. Wardani served as manager and project leader of engineering at Linkabit Corporation between 1980 and 1991. His B.S. and M.S. in Electrical Engineering were received from the University of California San Diego.David E. Leibowitz is Managing Partner of CH POTOMAC, a strategic services company focused on the entertainment, media and technology industries. Mr. Leibowitz brings twenty-five years of experience in copyright, media, communications, and technology matters, as well as business issues facing the entertainment, new media, consumer electronics and information technology industries. Among other activities, Mr. Leibowitz serves on the Industry Advisory Boards of Peppercoin, 13 Colonies Software, and Neurok Optics. Earlier in his career, Mr. Leibowitz Co-Founded VERANCE and served as it Chairman. VERANCE offers innovative technology solutions to protect, manage, and monitor audio and audiovisual content, including broadcast monitoring and verification, copy protection and content management. Before that, Mr. Leibowitz was Executive Vice President and General Counsel of the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), responsible for business and legal issues facing the industry with particular emphasis on how to position the industry to utilize new physical and electronic format systems. During this period, Mr. Leibowitz chaired the worldwide recording industrys International Steering Committee on DVD Audio, the RIAA New Technology and Multimedia Committee and the RIAA Legal Committee. Prior to his work at the RIAA, Mr. Leibowitz was a partner in the Washington, D.C., law firm Wiley Rein & Fielding. Mr. Leibowitz also has served as Policy Planning Advisor to the Register of Copyrights for the U.S. Copyright Office. |
