| Thursday, January 6 Noon - 1:00 PM Session A - DH3: Embracing the Connected Consumer - Entertainment and Technology - From the Broadband Home to the Mobile and Wi-Fi Universe In the four years since the burst of the technology bubble, an amazing thing has happened, the technology industry has once again, perhaps more quietly this time, transformed the relationship of the consumer to communications, media, entertainment and technology. . Whether its a wirelessly connected home comprised of unlimited content via DTV and HDTV, PDAs, laptops, desktops PCs, a Set-Top connection, IM devices or telephony system; a broadband mobile device, a fully loaded media friendly car, a broadband workspace or public space, the consumer is connected all the time, sending or receiving information and content. In this session, we will explore what it means to create and enable that fully connected universe. Tom Flanagan, Director, Worldwide Broadband Strategy, Texas Instruments Ken Salzberg, Manager, Business & Ecosystem Development, Systems Technology Lab, Corporate Technology Group, Intel Corporation Tony Barra, Chief Strategy Officer, Internet Home Alliance, President, Filament Consulting, Moderator Jason Hirschhorn, Senior Vice President, Digital Music and Media, MTV Networks: As Senior Vice President, Digital Music and Media, Jason Hirschhorn, is responsible for managing the online operations of MTV, MTV2, VH1, CMT, CTN and Comedy Central. He oversees the overall growth and strategy of digital music and media operations for the networks. Prior to being promoted to this position in November 2003, Hirschhorn was Senior Vice President of CMT.com and VH1.com. In his new role, Hirschhorn is responsible for overseeing the interactive strategies for MTV Networks, ensuring that each brand is in every media, including digital music, VOD, satellite, wireless and electronic devices. Prior to his appointment at VH1.com in May 2001, Hirschhorn had served as General Manager of Sonicnet.com since August 2000. During that time, Sonicnet.com set a new all-time traffic record and was consistently ranked as one of the top online music sites by Media Metrix. Before that, Hirschhorn was MTVis Vice President of Product Development for Sonicnet.com. Hirschhorn joined MTVi in March 2000 when MTV Networks bought Mischief New Media, a leading web site design and content development firm that he founded to serve the music industry. Hirschhorn subsequently founded several successful music entertainment destinations including RockOnTV.com, MusicStation.com, ShowbizWire.com, and MusicNewswire.com. Hirschhorn has a B.S. in International Business and Marketing from New York Universitys Stern School of Business. He is also on the board of Computers for Youth, which improves the educational, social and economic prospects for low-income students and their families by providing them with home computers and the skills to use them. Ken Salzberg, Manager, Business & Ecosystem Development, Systems Technology Lab, Corporate Technology Group, Intel Corporation: Mr. Ken Salzberg is a Manager of Business and Ecosystem Development for the Systems Technology Lab at Intels Corporate Technology Group. He is responsible for strategizing and expanding the wireless and internet ecosystem for mobile, home, and enterprise devices, by creating innovative concept platforms and differentiating technology building blocks, enabling and expanding the seamless access to information and content across networks, identifying and filling holes in an ecosystem, and enabling new business models. Areas of emphasis include converged communications with computing, entertainment, and the smart home. Mr. Salzberg has been at Intel for five years. Before joining Intel, Mr. Salzberg was a co-founder of a start-up that developed a browser based electronic design environment. This included support for design teams located around the globe as well as an electronic design portal. Additionally, Mr. Salzberg worked as a technical marketing manager for Mentor Graphics where he led a team in the development of design, component, and process management tools. Mr. Salzberg holds a bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Rhode Island. (formerly KP MG Consulting), responsible for leading the firms Entertainment Industry practice. In this role, Shahid oversees strategy and technology consulting projects for clients in the Music, Cable and Entertainment clients. In addition, Shahid also leads BearingPoints Thought Leadership activities for these segments. Prior to this role, Shahid was a Client Services Partner at IBM Global Services (IGS), where he led the activities of the various arms of IGS focusing on East Coast based Entertainment clients. Shahid is a seasoned Management Consulting and Information Technology (IT) Services professional with a strong background in developing and leading Services businesses. He has spent his career of managing senior level executive relationships and working with clients to diagnose their strategic, operational and technological issues and develop innovative solutions to address them. He has significant knowledge of the Media and Entertainment industry, and how emerging technologies are impacting them. Some of the key clients he has served include: Viacom, BMG, Warner Music, RIAA, Scholastic, Sony, etc. Prior to joining IBM, Shahid launched and led the Media Industry practices for two e-business consulting firms, ZEFER and Context. At these firms, while building the business, Shahid worked on strategic projects with senior executives at major Media firms. Shahid has also worked at Deloitte Consulting, JP Morgan and McGraw Hill, where he participated in and managed Strategy and IT projects globally. Shahid holds an MBA in Marketing and Finance from New York University's Stern School of Business. In addition, he has completed executive programs at Massachusetts Institute of Technology and New York University. Shahid has published white-papers on various topics related to the Entertainment Industry and Digital Economy. He is also a frequent speaker at industry conferences his 2004 speaking engagements include the Billboard Music & Money Symposium, Jupiter Plug-In, Micropayments Conference and Digital Entertainment Conference.Tom Flanagan, Director, Broadband Strategy, Broadband Communications Group, Texas Instruments: Tom Flanagan is Director, Broadband Strategy for Texas Instruments Broadband Communications Group. TIs broadband communications business includes cable modems, digital subscriber line (DSL) modems, integrated access devices (IADs), Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) gateways, carrier infrastructure, and home and office wireless networking. Prior to this, Mr. Flanagan was Director, Business Development for Telogy Networks and Vice President Sales and Marketing for ADC Skyline. Mr. Flanagan also held various marketing, sales and business development positions during a 12 year career with Dynatech Communications. He holds a B.S. degree from James Madison University.Brian Queen, Digital Media Solutions Manager, IBM Corp.: As Solution Manager, Brian has responsibility for sales of IBMs strategic media solutions, including those enabling wireless distribution of digital content. In addition to selling offerings for telecommunications, media, and retail customers, Brian is leading IBMs efforts in digital media distribution via public WiFi networks. These efforts include development of a WiFi solution strategy and supporting business models, formation of strategic alliances, and coordination of both IBM Development and IBM Business Partners. In his role, Brian also provides executive consulting services in business transformation and digital media distribution. Brian has held several marketing and sales management positions while at IBM, supporting customers in aerospace, defense, media and telecommunications industries. Prior to joining IBM, Brian was on the staff of Price Waterhouse where he had supervisory responsibility for several major audit and consulting clients. He also held engineering positions with the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Bell & Howell and Hyland Laboratories. Brian received a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering and an MBA from the University of Southern California. Brian is also a Certified Public Accountant, licensed in the State of California. Scott R. Campbell, Vice Consul, British Trade International, British Cons ulate-General: Scott is a New York City based Sector Specialist for the UK government. His role involves facilitating Business, Policy and Technology developments in both UK and North American markets for Media & Communications sectors. Scotts international business experience enables him to offer guidance to companies seeking to form strategic alliances, joint ventures and/or licensing agreements in the UK or North America. His expertise in Digital Media also lends support to a Homeland Security Task Force directed by the British Embassy out of Washington DC. President - Vedalabs Inc.: Digital Media software developer focusing on products for PCs and Digital Set Top Box applications. The company was sold to D-Stage, a publicly traded Incubator Fund in New York in 2001. Director of Business Development - Lucent Technologies: Scott was responsible for licensing Lucent's audio technologies and the underlying patents to key consumer electronics manufacturers and entertainment companies including; Sony Electronics, IBM, Intel, Samsung and Universal Music Group. CEO - Virtually Atomic: Consulting service for companies looking to adopt Digital Media production technology. Established policies and procedures for production, handling and distribution of digital media assets and for the procurement of technology and services for companies including, Virgin Radio, Virgin Retail Group, Abbey Road Studios and EMI Music. Helped US company Liquid Audio launch their online music delivery system in Europe. UK artists Duran Duran and George Michael quickly adopted the technology as part of their own marketing initiatives, which greatly helped Liquid Audio gain wide public recognition. Managing Director - MediaSpec UK Ltd.: Provided Digital Audio/Video workstations, training and support services to all major UK Broadcasters, Film Studios and independent production facilities. Clients included all BBC regions, Granada, Carlton, Pinewood & Sheparton Film Studios. Winner of the 1995 Creative Concepts Award from UK government for a handheld audio recorder called the Soundpad, which was developed on the Apple Newton platform. Recording Engineer: Prior to running his own company, Scott worked in the music industry as a recording engineer with a number of successful artists including Annie Lennox, Robbie Robertson, Deacon Blue, Wet Wet Wet, The Blue Nile and Simple Minds.Tony Barra, Chief Strategy Officer, Internet Home Alliance, President, Fil ament Consulting: Tony Barra is Chief Strategy Officer (CSO) of Internet Home Alliance. In this role, Barra is responsible for developing connected home business models and value chain analyses and new member recruitment. Barra recently launched his own consulting firm specializing in business model development and value chain analysis for the connected home industry. Prior to forming Filament Consulting, Barra was a principal at DiamondCluster International, a leading digital strategy firm. Barra led many projects including a detailed economic analysis of the value chain for delivering Internet based managed services to residential customers and a white paper evaluating the many technology protocols competing in today's home networking marketplace. Barra has led the development of a strategic partnership framework that assesses the strengths of companies in each segment of the connected home industry. Additional industries in which Barra led projects included real estate, energy, financial services and consumer products. Prior to that Barra was with Electronic Data Systems for nine years holding several leadership positions with expertise in product development processes and design technologies. Barra held positions with Ohmeda Medical Engineering and General Motors Corp. Barra has a MBA from the University of Michigan where he graduated with high distinction and a Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering degree from General Motors Institute. |
