Games and Information Content Distribution The conversation is about subscription and download purchase. Whether its the cable, satellite and Internet SVOD/VOD industry, the music streaming and MP3 industry, the radio industry or the information content industry, everyone is experimenting with forms of pay access to content. In the cable industry, the original subscription model is being gussied up with new packages, genre choices and greater access to content. In the music industry, the goal is to strike some a necessary answer to the upside down world of illegal P2P, and in the news and content industry, subscription models are being tested out every day to determine customer appetites. The question of which subscription or download model will serve which type of product is yet to be determined. In this session however, we bring together companies who are investing their futures on the answer. George Kliavkoff, Senior Vice President, Business Development, Major League Baseball Advanced Media Ellie Hirschhorn, Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer, MusicNet Lars Buttler, Vice President Global Online, Electronic Arts Stephen Smyth, Vice President, Mobile and Emerging Media, Reuters Alex Bernstein, VP Business Development, Virgin Digital Ron Frankel, CEO, Synacor, Moderator Stephen Smyth, Vice President, Mobile and Emerging Media, Reuters: St ephen Smyth leads Reuters consumer mobile and emerging media businesses, and is responsible for maximising revenues and brand value from the companys presence on these platforms. In this role, he oversees Reuters mobile and interactive television media products including relationships with key technology providers and affiliates across the globe. Prior to his current role, Stephen was responsible for media strategy and business development for Reuters. Before joining Reuters in January 2003, he was Director of Business Development for Bertelsmann, the media group. At Bertelsmann, Stephen worked for a number of divisions including the RTL Group, Bookspan and the firms E-Commerce Group. Prior to this he co-founded a number of software development companies. He received his B.A. and B.A.I. from Trinity College, University of Dublin and his M.S. from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.Ellie Hirschhorn, General Manager and Executive Vice President: As G eneral Manager and EVP of MusicNet, Ellie Hirschhorn is responsible for overseeing all business operations, programming and software development activities of the company. Her responsibilities include business development, distributor relations, program management & development, product management, programming & label relations, public relations, marketing and strategic planning. Prior to joining MusicNet, Ms. Hirschhorn held various posts during an 8-year tenure at Viacom. Most recently she was General Manager & SVP of MTV.com where she was responsible for the day-to-day leadership, strategy and management of the leading Internet music destination. Prior to MTV.com, she headed up Business Development for MTV Networks and was responsible for identifying, evaluating and executing new business development opportunities including cable network acquisitions, new lines of business and ancillary revenue opportunities. During her tenure, she led the business development efforts for the launch of the Suite, five new music channels from MTV and VH1 for multichannel distribution. Ms. Hirschhorn also served as Vice President of Corporate Development at Viacom, Inc. and worked at Showtime Networks. Before Viacom, she worked at Time, Inc. and various media companies. Ms. Hirschhorn began her career on Wall Street as an investment banker and private equity investor. She holds an MBA from Harvard Business School and a BA in History from Yale University. She currently serves as a member of the board of Directors and Trust Committee of Fiduciary Trust Company International.Lars Buttler, Vice President Global Online, Electronic Arts: Dr. Lars Buttler is Vice President Global Online for Electronic Arts (EA). Along with EAs Online Publishing team he defines EAs global online product, technology, distribution strategies and operational plans. In cooperation with the Asia Publishing team and the Studio, Lars oversees EAs entry into Asian markets, with particular focus on China as the number one online gaming opportunity. Lars also leads EAs Online Studio and the development of Online Games and Online Premium Services. Before joining EA, Lars was a Vice President at the Carlyle Group, the premier global private equity firm, focusing on investments in the field of Entertainment, Media and Telecommunications. Prior to Carlyle, he was President of Wingcast Europe, a Joint Venture of Ford Motor Company and QUALCOMM, Inc., specializing in wireless entertainment, media and interactive subscription services. Before joining Wingcast, Lars was with the Boston Consulting Group, where he worked in various capacities in the software and interactive media industry. Lars holds a Ph.D., summa cum laude, in Engineering from Dortmund University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), and earned an M.B.A from Harvard Business School. Ron Frankel, CEO, Synacor: As CEO, Ron Frankel has leveraged his experience as an executive in media and technology to establish Synacor as the leading provider of bundled premium services to ISPs. Prior to joining Synacor Frankel formed MGM Interactive as President where he guided the production of interactive games; the development of complementary online services and new business strategies for MGM in the interactive entertainment field. He has also served as Co-Founder and CEO of Perks.com an early leader in the delivery of loyalty and performance enhancement solutions for corporate clients including CitiGroup, Dr. Pepper, Showtime, Infiniti Motors, Handspring and Sony. Additionally, Frankel served as Executive Vice President, Chief Financial Officer and Senior Vice President of Marketing and Sales for Softview a leading creator of productivity software that later merged with Chipsoft and Intuit. Additionally, he had served as Senior Vice President of Marketing and Sales for Kenfil Distribution then the largest distributor of entertainment and productivity software in the U.S. Frankel attended the University of California, Berkley as an undergraduate and received a Juris Doctor from The University of Southern California Law Center with a specialty in corporate finance and technology. George T. Kliavkoff, Senior Vice President Business Development - Major League Baseball Advanced Media: Kliavkoff is responsible for negotiating all deals related to baseball's interactive media unit. His responsibilities include licensing all technology necessary to build and maintain the online and IP-delivered assets of MLB and its 30 baseball clubs. Additionally, Kliavkoff has primary responsibility for distributing MLB's online subscription products, including all audio and video game packages globally. Kliavkoff oversees MLBAM's strategic relationships and any M&A work. Prior to joining MLBAM, Kliavkoff ran the business development group for RealNetworks' consumer division for more than four years. At RealNetworks, Kliavkoff was among the senior management group that created the company's online media subscription services, including RealOne SuperPass. Kliavkoff's team was responsible for negotiating all deals necessary to build and distribute RealNetworks' various consumer products and services. During his tenure, RealOne SuperPass became the most widely distributed online media subscription service by incorporating innovative online sports, news, music and entertainment programming from a wide variety of content partners. Subscribers to RealNetworks online services grew from zero to more than one million paying, retained customers during Kliavkoff's tenure. Prior to joining RealNetworks, Kliavkoff spent 6 years as an attorney with prestigious law firms in Los Angeles and Seattle. He holds a BS in Journalism from Boston University's College of Communication and a JD from the University of Virginia School of Law.Bill Stratton is vice president of business development for Turner N etwork Sales (TNS), the domestic distribution, sales and marketing arm of Turner Broadcasting System, Inc. (TBS, Inc.). In this capacity, Stratton is responsible for executing all non-linear platform distribution for the Turner properties including broadband, VOD, interactive television, wireless technology and Wi-Fi. Stratton is based in Atlanta and reports directly to Kevin Cohen, senior vice president of interactive & enhanced television, TNS. A seasoned Turner veteran, Stratton has held positions with Turner Sports and CNN. Most recently, Stratton served as director of business development for TNS, focusing on broadband distribution and Video On Demand. In this role, he played a key role in launching broadband products from CNN Interactive and Turner Sports Interactive properties, including NASCAR.com, The British Open and PGA Championship. Stratton was integral in negotiating distribution agreements with AOL, Road Runner, Real Networks, and Yahoo. In addition, he was instrumental in launching both CNN on Demand and Cartoon Network/Boomerang on Demand with affiliate partners Time Warner Cable and Comcast. Stratton received a bachelor of arts degree in political science from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and a masters of business administration from Wake Forest University. He is currently a member of the Cable Telecommunications Association of Marketing (CTAM) and the On-Demand Consortium. Turner Network Sales (TNS), a division of Turner Broadcasting System, Inc., is responsible for the sales and marketing of Turner's 11 domestic basic cable networks - TBS, CNN, CNN Headline News, TNT, Cartoon Network, Turner Classic Movies, CNNfn, CNN International, CNN en Español, Turner South and Boomerang - to cable affiliates and special markets throughout the United States, Canada, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands. |
