IP Video, Datacasting, DSMCC and other Technologies Enabling the Transformation of Entertainment
Broadband video to the home is the next major phase of development in the evolution of the digital entertainment industries. Creating the infrastructure and identifying the technologies for the next broadband video pipe is a challenge that could reinvent the content industry and enable thousands of content providers with direct access to the consumer. How the technology industries manage this step forward is still an open question. There are a number of completing options. While this is not a zero-sum game, in this session we will hear from a number of the providers of solutions, from the IP Video, DSMCC to Datacasting enablers.

Seth Kenvin, Vice President Corporate Development, BigBand Networks: Vice President of Corporate Development Seth Kenvin joined BigBand Networks from the venture capital firm Cedar Fund where he worked from its founding. Before Cedar, he was with venture capital firm Venrock Associates. Kenvin was a senior editor of The Red Herring magazine, and was previously a member of the high technology corporate finance group of Bear, Stearns & Co. He holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees in engineering from Cornell University, and an MBA from Stanford University. Kenvin serves as treasurer and a board member for the Silicon Valley / Pacific Northwest chapter of the Cable & Telecommunications Association for Marketing (CTAM).





Peter Kang is a Partner in the San Francisco office of the global law firm of Sidley Austin Brown & Wood LLP. Mr. Kang joined Sidley’s Intellectual Property practice group in early 2003, devoted to serving the IP and related legal services needs of technology clients. Mr. Kang counsels clients in patent disputes; technology transfer and IP licensing; strategic IP portfolio development; patent opinions; and IP enforcement and litigation. Mr. Kang has served on the in-house patent committee for a major biomedical company, and serves as an International Advisor for Global Venture Consultants. Mr. Kang is registered to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, and is a member of the California bar. Mr. Kang works with major semiconductor and electronics clients in IP matters in the US, Asia, and Europe. Mr. Kang also represents clients in complex litigation and trials of IP lawsuits nationwide, including federal court patent jury trial experience and patent trial experience before the International Trade Commission. With over a dozen years’ experience in Silicon Valley, Mr. Kang has represented semiconductor companies (fabless and manufacturers), semiconductor equipment manufacturers, semiconductor IP design houses, and chip packaging companies in disputes involving DRAM, FPGA, CPLD, microcontroller, DSP, CAM, power IC/analog, ASIC, and process technologies. Prior to joining the Firm, Mr. Kang was Managing Partner of the San Francisco Office of Skjerven Morrill LLP. Earlier in his career, Mr. Kang served as Law Clerk for the Hon. Ernest C. Torres, now Chief Judge of the U.S. District Court for the District of Rhode Island. Prior to law school, Mr. Kang worked as a software engineer for a biomedical research organization at Brown University. Mr. Kang served on the Board of Directors of the Asian Pacific Bar Association of Silicon Valley. He is an award-winning author and frequent speaker at industry and legal conferences. He received both a B.A. in Classics and a B.S. in Industrial Engineering from Stanford University, where he won the Fairclough Award and the Classics Department Senior Prize. Mr. Kang also received a Certificate of Merit from the University of London’s Institut Brittanique in Paris. Mr. Kang received his J.D., cum laude, from Georgetown University. Scott Dougall is the Director of Content Delivery Software for Skystream Networks where he is responsible for all of the design, development and marketing of the zBand suite of software. Scott joined the company in 1999, bringing a lifelong experience in the broadcast industry, and years of experience in Software Development. Prior to joining Skystream, Scott was the President and founder of Varuna Software, a Canadian based company that he founded to explore the future of broadcast. This research resulted in the development of the Jetstream Data Broadcast System, a System for managing the aggregation and broadcast of computer based media. Skystream acquired Varuna in September 1999 and all of the employees and products were integrated. Scott now runs the Northern Campus for Skystream, located in Thunder Bay Ontario, Canada. Scott has an MBA from the University of Michigan, and a joint degree in Computer Science and Economics from Queen’s University in Canada. Scott also sits on the board of directors of his family’s television and radio broadcast companies.

Ryan Petty, Vice President of Product Management, Myrio: One of the founding architects of Myrio’s TV over IP solution, Ryan has been involved in all aspects of system design and engineering since the Myrio solution was first developed. As the primary interface between Myrio and external standards bodies driving solutions in the broadband IP video space, Ryan promotes network technologies and standards applicable to broadband IP video delivery. He sits on the Architecture Experts Group within the FS-VDSL Focus Group of ITU-T Study Group 16.
