| Saturday, January 8th 10:30 AM - 11:30 AM Session A - DH17: Entertainment Expands the Digital Home: Networking, Sharing and Protecting With the introduction and planning of the next generation of digital entertainment products from DVD video to audio into the home now in process, the emergence of the fully digital home is at hand. With the fully networked and integrated entertainment experience as the goal, content must be immediately available to the consumer in an easy as well as secure environment. In this session, we will begin the discussion of what the distribution of product in digital home will look like in the coming year as well as how the technologies of the future will enable entertainment in the digital home to emerge. Anthony Wood, Founder and CEO, Roku John Romano, Senior Vice President, Consumer PC Global Business, Hewlett-Packard Company Michael Harris, President and Chief Operations Officer, Digital 5, Inc. Carter Laren, Senior Security Architect, Cryptography Research Janet Snowdon, Business Development Manager, IBM Digital Media Group Patrick Griffis, Director, Worldwide Media Standards, Windows Strategic Relations & Policy Group, Microsoft Corp. Paul Jackson, Senior Analyst, Forrester Research B.V., Moderator Patrick Griffis, is Director, Worldwide Media Standards for the Windows Strategic Relations & Policy group. He manages the group responsible for digital media standards across a variety of markets, geographies, and regulatory environments. Pat is vice chair of the Digital Living Network Alliance, as well as being a member of the Advanced Television Systems Committee (ATSC), and the ATSC Forum. He is US Head of Delegation to ITU-R Study Group 6 Working Party-6M on Multimedia and Vice Chair of the joint ITU-R/T rapporteurs group on Interactive TV harmonization. He is also an invited member of the International Broadcast Council (IBC). He is past Colin Dixon is Executive Strategy Advisor to Alticast, Inc. In this role, he advises Alticast on market strategy, business development and business alignment in the US market. He has held senior positions at companies such as Microsoft, Liberate and Oracle and is currently an Executive Consultant to the rich media industry. He has overseen the successful delivery of products such as Electronic Program Guides and Video Servers and created Interactive TV Games services and Broadcast Interactive Systems. In addition to his experience in the rich media industry, he has extensive experience in the communications, networking and network management industries working at companies such as Novell and Bay Networks. Mr. Dixon has a Masters Degree from the University of Florida and has post-graduate business education experience from Stanford. He is a published author. President of the IEEE Consumer Electronic Society and former board member of the Advanced Technology Test Center. He is an active member of IEEE and SMPTE. Pat joined Microsoft in 1998 to support DTV strategy and was Director of Worldwide Television Standards for the Microsoft TV Group. Prior to Microsoft, Pat spent 15 years at Panasonic in various senior management positions including Vice President of Strategic Product Development at Panasonic Broadcast where he helped launch DVCPRO and had responsibility for Panasonics corporate HDTV strategy coordination for the USA. He was also Vice President of the Business Engineering Center, a corporate-level new business and product development group reporting to the President of the Matsushita Electric Corp. of America. Pat started his career at RCA Consumer Electronics Division in Indianapolis, USA where he earned 8 patents in TV design. Pat is an active speaker on standards issues. Recent speaking engagements include, Parks Associates Connections, Hollywood Post Alliance Technology Retreat, the National Association of Broadcasters, the International Broadcasting Convention, the Consumer Electronics Show, the World Broadcast Union and the UN World Summit on the Information Society. Pat holds a BSEE from Tufts University and an MSEE from Purdue University John Romano, Senior Vice President, Hewlett-Packard Company: Joh n Romano is responsible for the Consumer PC global business unit that provides desktop PCs to consumer markets. These products provide customers flexibility and choice, innovative solutions and the latest technology and value. Romano says his most memorable HP experience was participating in the seven-member start-up team for the home computer business in 1994. He recalls the excitement of starting from scratch and quickly building up the business. Romano led the R&D effort, including recruiting an experienced team from within HP and the industry. The Pavilion product line is the fastest growing in HP history. It was launched in the U.S. retail market in March of 1995 and attained a solid number three in U.S. retail by the end of 1997. By 2000 - 2001, the HP Pavilion was number one in the U.S. retail market. Since joining HP in 1980, Romano has held various positions ranging from Engineer, R&D Director, Operations Manager, General Manager and Vice President. He spent 14 years in the Test and Measurement business, including leading the R&D for Logic Analysis and Microprocessor Development systems with laboratories in Colorado and Tokyo, Japan. This included the start-up phase of two business units. While Romano served as Group R&D director in 1990, he oversaw the development strategies including those of PC servers, desktops, mobile and handheld devices. During that time, he served as founding Chairman of IrDA, an industry-wide association that created the standard for infra-red communications for mobile devices (based on HP's pioneering work in handhelds and notebook computers). On a more personal side, he is raising his "second family" with wife Melinda and daughter Jasmine (born May 1999). He has two grown children, Gen who is a graphic design lead and Dylan a software engineer. His family is his enduring source of joy and energy. Romano received his bachelor's of science degree (math, physics and chemistry), and his bachelor's and master's degrees in education from the University of Colorado. He also completed graduate work in computer science and electrical engineering. Before beginning his HP career, Romano also taught elementary school for seven years.Richard Doherty, Managing Director of Blu-ray and Professional A/V, Panasonic, Panasonic Hollywood Laboratory: Richard Doherty is currently Director of Professional A/V for Panasonic. He works at the Panasonic Hollywood Labs (PHL), a R&D lab located on the Universal Studios Hollywood Lot, and is tasked with developing new a/v products for the professional and consumer market. PHL is taking a leading role in the development of the Blu-ray HD optical disc format for consumer and professional high-definition video products. Prior to Panasonic, Richard worked at the startup CineForm, where he was principal architect of the Aspect HD real-time editing system, which utilizes wavelet-based compression and software acceleration to realize real-time HD performance. Richard has had engineering management and marketing roles at a number of previous companies, including the film matchback software company FIlmMatch (as a founder), the internet entertainment company Zodo, and as a founder of the company Silerity which delivered datapath optimization software tools for the design automation market (and was later acquired by Synopsys). Richard is also an award-winning film director, with a dozen film festival awards under his belt. Richard has a BS in Electrical Engineering from Caltech, and a MFA in Film and Television Production from USC. Paul Jackson, Senior Analyst, Forrester Research B.V.: Paul is a seni or analyst in Forrester's Devices, Media, & Marketing research group and contributes to Forrester's European Consumer Technographics® research; he is based in Amsterdam. He focuses on analyzing and forecasting how European consumers perceive, adopt, and utilize new technologies and online services. He specializes in devices (including mobile phones, PCs, and game consoles), consumer motivation, online service usage, and related marketing strategies. He is currently focussed on the global market for the emerging Digital Home. Paul is a regular contributor to publications including Financial Times, La Tribune, The Guardian, and Handelsblatt and CNN. Previous Work Experience Prior to joining Forrester, Paul worked for a full service advertising agency in London (HHCL) where he helped the agency toward "becoming digital," as well as working on several of the agency's key accounts. Before this, Paul spent five years as a management consultant with Deloitte Consulting and Logica Business Consulting, working on a large number of high-profile strategic/technology projects in the online, media, and mobileJanet Snowdon, Business Development Manager, IBM Digital Media Group: Janet Snowdon, Business Development Manager, IBM Digital Media Group, is responsible for the development of IBM's strategy for content protection, including building on-going alliances with target companies within the content distribution area. Prior to her current position, Snowdon was responsible for Solution Sales for IBM Media and Entertainment Industry. Since joining IBM in 1983, Snowdon has held a variety of sales, marketing and engineering positions within IBMs consumer electronics, transportation, manufacturing and telecommunications industries. A graduate of University of California, Davis, Snowdon earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Chemical Engineering. She has completed IBM Presidents class and International Presidents class and received numerous sales awards and recognition from clients. Snowdon has also been awarded IBM Presidents award for her work with semiconductors. Michael Harris, President and Chief Operations Officer, Digital 5, Inc.: Michael Harris, President and Chief Operations Officer, is responsible for technology vision and corporate strategy. Prior to joining Digital 5 in September 2002, Mr. Harris was VP, Global Software Strategy for the Consumer Division of STMicroelectronics. He joined ST following the acquisition of the consumer division of Ravisent Technologies. Mr. Harris served as founder and CTO of Ravisent since its inception in 1994. While at Ravisent, he was involved in several private funding rounds and a successful IPO, leading to an eventual valuation of nearly $1B. During his time there, Ravisent secured design wins for its DVD technology with most premier PC and consumer electronics OEMs. Prior to Ravisent, Mr. Harris served in executive or technical roles at numerous small companies and start-ups. Mr. Harris graduated from Purdue University with a degree in Computer and Electrical Engineering. Anthony Wood, Founder and Chief Executive Officer, Roku: Anthon y Wood is the founder of Roku and serves as chief executive officer. He is involved in all aspects of the company, with a special focus on product design and development. Prior to Roku, Anthony invented the personal video recorder (PVR) and founded ReplayTV, where he served as president and CEO before the companys acquisition by SONICblue. While at SONICblue, he served as senior vice president of engineering and was responsible for the ReplayTV, Rio and GoVideo product lines. Before ReplayTV, Anthony was founder and CEO of iband Inc., the Internet software company that developed Dreamweaver, the best-selling Internet authoring tool for professionals. When Macromedia acquired iband, Anthony became its vice president of Internet authoring. Earlier in his career, Anthony was founder and CEO of Sunrize Industries, a leading supplier of hardware/software tools for non-linear audio recording and editing. Anthony holds a bachelors degree in electrical engineering from Texas A&M University.Carter Laren, Senior Security Architect, Cryptography Research: Carter Laren is Cryptography Research's technical liaison to Hollywood studios, content owners and consumer electronics manufacturers. Affectionately referred to as the "Anti-Pirate," he has extensive experience designing and evaluating secure communication and pay-television systems, tamper resistant devices, and content protection technology. Prior to joining Cryptography Research, Carter designed secure communication systems for both commercial and classified government applications. As a Weapon Systems Engineer at Lockheed Martin, he also designed and tested critical components of the AEGIS Combat System. Carter holds a B.S. degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Pittsburgh, where he was awarded the elite Chancellor's Scholarship. |
