And that is the job of the DRM technology industry, to make the film, music and mobile technology delivery systems safe for mass use. In this session, we will explore, from the point of view of the technology companies, the possibilities and potential of DRM in the evolving content landscape. From CDs and DVDs to broadband and wireless delivery, DRM and content protection represents the bottom line of the future of our industries. Leibowitz, Managing Partner, CH Potomac, Moderator Jan Steenkamp, CEO, Entriq, Inc.: As CEO of Entriq, Jan Steenkamp brings to the company his extensive experience in pay television operations, gained from a range of management positions within MIH Limited (MIHL) since 1985. Before joining Entriq, Steenkamp was CEO of MIHL's technology division and Chairman of OpenTV Corp. until August 2002. Prior to this, he was CEO of OpenTV, where he was instrumental in its development as the leading provider of cost-effective solutions for the delivery of digital interactive services to television viewers around the world. Previously, Steenkamp was the Commercial Director of Irdeto Consultants in The Netherlands, and held various management and new business initiative positions at both Irdeto and the MIH Group from 1985 to 1997. During that time, he initiated the introduction of pay television in Greece, managed a project team to establish pay television in Italy, worked with Shinawatra in Thailand to establish digital television, worked with Galaxy in Australia to launch the first DVB digital DTH platform in the world, and was active in the acquisition and development of the European Nethold operations in The Netherlands, Belgium, Finland, Sweden, Denmark and Norway. Steenkamp studied electrical engineering at Witwatersrand Technicon in South Africa and has a television broadcasting background. Today, he is a sought-after speaker on the topics of Pay Media over the Internet and the future of broadband.Donald E. Leake, Program Director for Copy, Protection Business Develo pment, IBM Research Division: Don Leake brings over 35 years of IBM experience in the IT industry to his current position of program director for copy protection business development, IBM Research Division. Leake is responsible for promoting the use of IBMs extensive menu of content protection technologies in IBMs products and industry initiatives as the use of rich digital media becomes pervasive in IT applications. IBMs content protection technologies include encryption, watermarking, fingerprinting and software tamper resistance. Leake also works closely with the Media and Entertainment Industry, in its transition to digital, through his participation in standards organizations, consortia, alliances and multi-company working relationships. As such, Leake is currently the IBM representative to the 4C group, the Copy Protection Technical Working Group, the Pro-MPEG Forum, and formerly was the IBM rep to the Secure Digital Music Initiative. Previously, Leake managed the marketing, sales and customer support functions for the group in IBM that develops MPEG and set top box chips. In this role, Leake was responsible for establishing IBM leadership in the digital media chip business. Prior to that, Mr. Leake held a number of marketing and product planning management positions in IBMs high-end and mid-range systems development organizations, including managing product planning for IBMs largest commercial processors. He holds Batchelor of Science degree in Mathematics and Masters of Science degree in Statistics from Penn State University.Chris Parkerson, DRM Evangelist, RSA Security: Chris Parkerson is the DRM Evangelist at RSA Security. In his role, Chris is responsible for market strategy for RSA DRM solutions. Chris has worked with several pioneering companies in data integration, content management, and Web Services technology prior to joining RSA. He has worked as a product manager for two Valley start-ups including Vianeta Communications which provides XML-based solutions for health information management and Ipedo which provides XML-based solutions for content and data integration and management. Prior to the move to the West, Chris was a product manager for eXcelon Corp. where he was responsible for the first XML database, XIS, and first XML application development environment, Stylus Studio, on the market. Chris has spoken at numerous industry events including Digital Hollywood, the RSA Conference, Jupiter Content Management Conference, and numerous XML and Web Services technology events. Chris graduated from Boston University with a BS in Computer Systems Engineering.Bruce Gitlin, Vice President, Business Development, ContentGuard: Bruc e Gitlin's responsibilities include all business development, marketing and sales. Prior to ContentGuard Gitlin was Director, Strategic Alliances at Xerox where he was responsible for establishing alliances with key computer industry leaders. At Xerox, his responsibilities included VP Strategy for the Office Systems Division and for the Office Products Division, VP and General Manager Personal Computer Division, and a range of positions in marketing, international planning, product development, solutions development and program management.David E. Leibowitz is Managing Partner of CH POTOMAC, a strategic ser vices company focused on the entertainment, media and technology industries. Mr. Leibowitz brings twenty-five years of experience in copyright, media, communications, and technology matters, as well as business issues facing the entertainment, new media, consumer electronics and information technology industries. Among other activities, Mr. Leibowitz serves on the Industry Advisory Boards of Peppercoin, 13 Colonies Software, and Neurok Optics. Earlier in his career, Mr. Leibowitz Co-Founded VERANCE and served as it Chairman. VERANCE offers innovative technology solutions to protect, manage, and monitor audio and audiovisual content, including broadcast monitoring and verification, copy protection and content management. Before that, Mr. Leibowitz was Executive Vice President and General Counsel of the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), responsible for business and legal issues facing the industry with particular emphasis on how to position the industry to utilize new physical and electronic format systems. During this period, Mr. Leibowitz chaired the worldwide recording industrys International Steering Committee on DVD Audio, the RIAA New Technology and Multimedia Committee and the RIAA Legal Committee. Prior to his work at the RIAA, Mr. Leibowitz was a partner in the Washington, D.C., law firm Wiley Rein & Fielding. Mr. Leibowitz also has served as Policy Planning Advisor to the Register of Copyrights for the U.S. Copyright Office. |
