The projections of broadband into the home and workplace, along with the explosion in wireless, bring the issues of brand extension, advertising and commerce to the forefront of our industry once again. What can we seriously expect from the merger of content and commerce? With broadband and wireless taking off, it seems as if the entertainment and information industries have reached a new taking off point for the e-commerce revolution. Michael Jones, founder and president of Userplane, oversees the companys application and business strategy, focusing on the future of live communications through the development of web applications. During the past four years, Userplane has gained recognition as a leading web-based application provider, in large part due to the success of its Flash-based Audio/Video Webmessenger and Webchat. Jones, one of the primary team members in the design and development of the Userplane Community Suite remains the primary manager of the application and its deployments. Currently Jones sits on the board of IdeaOasis, and holds advisory positions on several dating and social networking websites. Prior to founding Userplane, Jones was CEO of PBJ Digital, a national web development agency with clients ranging from Disney to Boeing. Among other activities, Jones has been a keynote speaker at the 2003 OFFF conference in Barcelona Spain, a featured presenter at Flash Forward 2003, a guest speaker at BlogOn 2004, and has written a number of published industry articles. He earned his Bachelor of Arts in Marketing from the University of Oregon
Patrick Norton, Executive Producer for video and podcasts in the Consumer and Small Business Group, Patrick Norton oversees the production of a growing collection of online programming, including DL.TV, John C. Dvorak's CrankyGeeks, and the ExtremeTech, What's New Now and Gearlog Radio podcasts, and leads the group in selecting the technology and systems employed in producing, encoding and distributing content. Patrick also cohosts DL.TV, a irreverent 45 minute video blend of hands on how-to, news and product reviews 'by tech fans, for tech fans. Shot live and streamed live around the web, the show is also available for download on demand.
Patrick worked at TechTV from it's launch in 1998, where he founded the TechTV testing labs, later as the co-host and managing editor of "The Screen Savers" a live daily television show, from 2000 to 2004. Patrick has written for PC Magazine, Yahoo! Tech Tuesday, PC World, CNET and Computer Power User. He began reviewing computer and consumer electronics products as an editor for Windows Sources magazine in 1995.
Mike Burns, CEO & Chief Creative Officer, Fuel Industries: After seven years as Chief Creative Officer at Fuel and five more in Creative Director roles at pioneering interactive agencies, Mike Burns has developed the reputation as one of the top creative minds in interactive marketing and branded entertainment. He has worked with agencies and brands from around the continent on projects ranging from branded games to full-blown 3D multi-user experiences. He has been recognized numerous times for his creative approach to game development, and has been the recipient of several awards, including the 2003 World Mail Awards for Internet Commerce and several Promo! Awards for Fuels work with Pepsi and Panasonic. In addition, Fuel was one of the finalists for Billboard Digital Entertainment Awards Advergame of the Year for its work with SAAB. Most recently, Fuel has developed cutting-edge online creative for such world-class brands as Sprite, GAP, Hersheys Take Five candy bar and Discovery Channel Canada as well as entertainment properties including Foxs Family Guy and American Dad and HBOs Deadwood. Mike is a highly requested speaker and panelist for marketing and gaming conferences across North America, and most recently spoke at E3 Expo in Los Angeles and Casuality in Seattle, Washington.
Craig Besnoy, Vice President Business Development for Imaginova Corp, a media com pany specializing in serving the intellectually curious audience. Craig joined Imaginova in 2004 and currently leads Imaginovas business development team to leverage Imaginovas rich archive of broadband content to deliver contextually relevant advertising and commerce messages to consumers. In addition, he has been working extensively to build communities among the intellectually curious. Prior to joining Imaginova, Craig worked in the digital music industry pioneering digital business models at companies such as ArtistDirect, MP3, GetMusic and Farmclub.com. He gained his entertainment experience as an attorney in the film industry working with independent film makers and as a financial analyst working for Sony Music. Craig received a BS in Accounting from the University of Alabama and a JD from the Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law. He is a licensed attorney and CPA in the State of New York.
Charles Whittingham, Vice President of Sales, Advertising.com: Charles joined Advertising.com in 2004 and currently leads the sales efforts for the western region. Overseeing both the San Francisco and Los Angeles offices, Charles leads the initiative to partner with leading advertisers and agencies to develop performance-based marketing programs that deliver superior return on investment. Prior to joining Advertising.com, Charles served as vice president of sales for The Excite Network's west region and prior to that was vice president of sales for About.com. Charles received a Bachelors degree in English and Economics from St. Lawrence University.
Murgesh Navar, founder and CEO of Podbridge, brings deep engineering, business-development and entrepreneurial expertise to the development, launch and growth of Podbridge. Prior to founding Podbridge, Murgesh co-founded Audiofeast, a start-up company that developed a consumer audio service for portable devices. His experience at Audiofeast led him to recognize the power of podcasting and the need for a business model to enable advertising in the new medium. Murgesh previously built and led product development teams for a billion-dollar line of workstations at Silicon Graphics, and open platforms for delivering enhanced content and services to television at Liberate Technologies, a joint venture between Netscape and Oracle. He subsequently led Liberates penetration of Asia-Pacific markets as the head of Asia Pacific sales and business development. Murgesh holds a B.S. in Electrical Engineering from Bangalore University and an M.S. in Computer Science from the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology.
Allison Dollar is a founder and co-president of the Interactive Television Alliance, a non-profit trade association whose broad constituency is committed to accelerating iTV in the U.S. She is also a principal in 2degree Partners, a management consultancy focused on iTV, specializing in alliance packaging, cross-platform marketing and digital services integration. A longtime champion of ubiquitous interactivity, she co-founded eTV World, Hollyweb Live!, iNNOVATORS venture pitch series, and chaired NABs Executive Committee to launch Multimedia World. Clients have included IBMs eBusiness (American Express, Bell Atlantic, Mail Boxes Etc.), AOL, SimplyTV, Web TV, WB, Creative Planet, Stan Lee Media, Vi[z]Rt (virtual sets), and Envivio (MPEG-4). For Webcasts.com she was CSO and a founding board member (IPO as iBEAM Internet Broadcasting Corp). Previously, for Phillips Business Information she led business/content development with over 30 trade publications. Titles included Interactive Video News, Interactive Marketing News, Internet Week, CableFAX, Multimedia Week, E-Commerce News, Film & Video Magazine, A/V Video magazine, Via Satellite. While Editorial Director of In Motion she created sponsor packages with Sony, SGI, PacBell, Autodesk, AOL, HBO, Kodak and Sprint. These anticipated the impact of 3D visual effects, advertainment, DBS, broadband, VOD and wireless devices. She worked with Oscar-nominee documentarian Ross Spears, CBS News, the Maryland Film Commission. A founding board member of Marylands WIFV, she received ASAEs Golden Circle award, held advisory board positions for CINE and the US Film&Video Festival. She holds a M.A. from the University of Virginia and Phi Beta Kappa B.A. from Goucher College in Baltimore, and has been interviewed by National Public Radio, LA Times, Wall Street Journal, Hot Wired, Hollywood Reporter, Variety, BizTalk1, Millimeter, Digitrends, Broadcasting & Cable and other outlets. Her book on iTV, Interactive Television: Tracking and Preparing for an Emerging Market, was released in April 2003.
