Mobile Video & TV Technology & Platforms that Make the System Go
To fully appreciate and understand the parameters and momentum behind the move to broadband and video on mobile platforms, having a grasp of the technology and devices which drives the system and define how the consumer will be able to experience mobile video, film and TV. In this session, we bring together a group of the most knowledgeable executives in the mobile technology and device space, all members of companies who are playing a formative role in the evolution of the mobile broadband universe. The explosion of content on mobile is simply a reflection of how great the device, the enabling technologies and the networks are and there is no question that with the advancements being made on all fronts, the ability for the consumer to appreciate and experience high quality mobile is not in question.

Bhuvan Lall, President (Global), MCORP Global: An Award winning Documentary Filmmaker and soon to be published novelist, Bhuvan Lall is the President (Global) Entertainment Division of MCORP Global, a US$ 2.1 billion Indian Information, Communication and Entertainment Multinational. MCORP Global owns a major Telco in India (Spice Telecom) and is the first Indian manufacturer of Cell Phones under the brand name of "Spice". The company is in pre production of the US$ 120 million International motion picture "Buddha" and has business interests in Production, Distribution and Exhibition in Hollywood as well as in India. The company also owns the largest multiplex in North India Spice World with 9 screens and is now launching Mobile TV in India. Prior to joining MCORP Global, Bhuvan Lall founded, established and managed his own International Production and Distribution venture Lall Entertainment. Earlier at 34, Lall was named Executive Director of the "Indian Broadcasting Foundation" (IBF), the trade organization of Broadcasters in India, a position he held for three years (2000 - 03). At 30, he founded, "Empire Entertainment Pvt. Ltd", a strategic advisory company specializing in the Indian convergence and entertainment industries. In addition, Lall also served as the Senior Vice President of a publicly listed Indian media company - Srishti Videocorp. Lall began his career by launching his first enterprise as an entrepreneur "Dream Factory International", an international documentary film production company. Bhuvan Lall is closely connected to policy making in the Government of India and was appointed a Member of the Planning Commissions working group for Indias 10th five year plan (2002 - 07), on Information & Broadcasting. He was also invited to draft Indias Convergence Legislation, The Communication Bill. Lall was earlier appointed an "International Consultant" to the 35th International Film Festival of India in Goa (2004). Bhuvan Lall plays a leadership role in major industry associations and serves as the co-chair of the Assochams Entertainment Industry Leaders Council of India. He is also the founder of Animation Producers Association of India. Lall was elected Member of the International Television Academy (Emmy Awards Council) in 2000 and he has also been the Indian Representative of NATPE, since 1997. Bhuvan Lall has been invited to lecture at Anderson School of Management, UCLA and has been a Visiting Professor at Indian Institute of Mass Communication and a Guest Lecturer at the Jamia Mass Communication Research Center. A professionally trained film director and scriptwriter with a Masters in Mass Communication,, Lall produced and directed thirty five Documentary and Short films on Indian subjects including "The Coal War", and "Moving Pictures", for International as well as Indian TV networks. Lalls other work "The Song of the Earth" was screened in 22 International TV and Film Festivals. As an International Journalist and Writer his research interests are the global Entertainment Economy and Ancient Civilizations. He has published three reports and contributed over a thousand columns and articles in international journals on the Global Media & Entertainment Industry. Bhuvan Lall is a recipient of a first class Masters Degree in Mass Communication (Film, TV & Radio Production) from the Mass Communication Research Center, New Delhi and he also earned a Bachelors Degree in Sociology from the University of Delhi. A native of New Delhi, Bhuvan Lall is absorbed in spiritual studies, landscape photography, poetry and the opera. He is also an ardent Polo and Chess enthusiast.
Omar Javaid is senior director of business development for QUALCOMM MediaFLO: Javaid joined QUALCOMM in 2003 as senior director of business development for QUALCOMM Wireless Business Solutions (QWBS). Javaid brings more than a decade of technology and entrepreneurial experience to QUALCOMM, ranging from strategic business planning to advanced information systems planning, development and implementation. Prior to joining QUALCOMM, Javaid was the chief technologist for Wireless Knowledge, overseeing and driving thought leadership and enterprise client development for Wireless Knowledge. Previously Javaid was the founder, chairman, and chief technology officer at Mobilocity, Inc., a professional services firm providing mobile technology solutions. In this capacity, Javaid was instrumental in establishing Mobilocity as one of the worlds leading mobile and wireless consulting firms. In addition to his entrepreneurial experience, he has held key technology leadership roles in Deloitte & Touche LLP, Advance Publications, and The University of Michigan. Javaid holds a bachelors degree in chemistry and cellular and molecular biology from the University of Michigan.
Tammy Franklin is vice president of business development for Turner Broadcasting S ystem, Inc. (TBS, Inc.). In this capacity, Franklin is responsible for developing and executing all non-linear distribution for the Turner properties across broadband, interactive television and wireless platforms, with a primary focus on wireless initiatives. Franklin is based in Atlanta and reports directly to Dennis Quinn, executive vice president of business development for TBS, Inc. Prior to joining TBS, Inc., Franklin served as director of new business development and strategic marketing for Motorola, Inc. In this role, she managed the team responsible for the identification, growth and development of new business and partnerships for iDEN, a division of Motorola, Inc. While employed at Motorola, Inc., she also launched Boost Mobile, the lifestyle-based youth brand presently focused on offering premium communications products and services and currently owned by Sprint NEXTEL. Franklin earned a bachelor of arts degree in English from Yale University and a masters of business administration from Harvard University.
Bob Shallow, Head, Music and Rich Media Business Unit, North America, Nokia; Bob Shallow, a seasoned TV executive and new media entrepreneur with more than 15 years experience currently heads the Music and Rich Media Business Unit in North America for Nokia. Shallow is responsible for bringing to market a range of music and rich media optimized devices as well as a range of companion consumer content services. These touch radio, premium on demand music and video services as well as multi-channel mobile television broadcasting. Shallow recently joined Nokia in November of 2004 bringing a wealth of international media industry experience. Shallow spent 15 years with IMG, the leading global sports and lifestyle media, rights management and marketing company, in various capacities. Most recently Shallow was the Vice President, Production Ventures and Business Development with TWI, the companys media arm, responsible for developing distribution opportunities through digital cable, mobile, broadband and optical disk as well as managing the digital commercial activities of numerous prestigious clients. Formerly, Shallow was the Vice President of Production at TWI supervising the creation of numerous television specials and series. Shallow was instrumental launching a number of new media firsts including the Passport to Wimbledon, ESPNs first integrated multi-platform coverage of a major sports championship; British Open Player Channels, AOL Broadbands first live multi-channel coverage of a major event; Essential Sport, the first globally syndicated daily sports news channel produced specifically for Mobile Phone operators in addition to Sportskool, Americas only dedicated video on demand sports instruction channel. Shallow is a member of the National Television Academy and National Sports Marketing Association. He has spoken at industry conferences including CTIA, Streaming Media East, Sports Digital Media Summit and National Sports Marketing Association conferences on topics including rights management, business models, market opportunity, technology and marketing and promotions. Shallow earned a Bachelor of Arts in Communications from Pepperdine University.
Rich Ferreira, Senior Director of Marketing and Regional Marketing Manager for the Americas for Business Unit Mobile and Personal. Rich focuses his team in driving solutions for the Americas for cellular, connectivity, cordless and personal entertainment products. Ferreira began his career as an engineer in wafer fab. As project manager, he designed and built the next generation Philips bipolar fab in Sunnyvale in 1978. He has over 18 years experience in business development, sales, marketing in the semiconductor industry, including 15 years with Philips Semiconductors. Rich has served as HP Global Account Manager and successfully drove the overall EMS channel support model for Philips in support of HP's business transition initiative to EMS in Asia and Mexico. Rich has also had several sales management positions throughout the US with both Philips and manufacturer's representatives for semiconductors. In the past 3 years, Rich managed cellular business with new GPRS/EDGE cellular customer penetration and large market share gains in NA with key service providers. In addition, Ferreira is managing the Philips VoIP and VVoIP platform and customer development programs globally. Ferreira has driven Philips market share increases in portable media players and is focusing on the next generation of converged cellular/PMP's. He is spearheading the next high growth area for Philips, with the development of super PMP platforms and the additional functionality options of TVoM, PVR, VVoIP, 3G, Nav. Ferreira earned a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from University of California at Santa Barbara and an MBA from the University of Santa Clara.
Gregory Berkin, Co-founder, Think Mobile: a Burbank, California leading entertainment and technology company which distributes feature films and other short/long form licensed and secure content for video-enabled mobile devices including personal digital assistants (PDAs), personal media players (PMPs), handhelds and smart phones. Greg also founded Think Digital, Inc. a media and technology company and distributor producing original works for DVD, high definition, VOD and handhelds. <http://www.thinkdigital.tv/>www.thinkdigital.tv Previously, Greg served as Intel Corporations DVD Evangelist for more than 6 years, working with Hollywood studios, software developers and the computer industry to make DVD the most successful consumer electronics product of all time. Greg earned his MBA with Duke University, sponsored by Intel Corporation and a Bachelors in Computer Science. Greg is also a judge for the Technical and Engineering Emmy Awards. In addition, Greg is producing a feature-length documentary about Las Vegas based on Jack Sheehans best-selling book, Skin City.
Ralph Simon, Chairman, Mobile Entertainment Forum Americas & President/CEO , The Mobilium Group: Ralph Simon is recognized as one of the founders of the modern mobile music and entertainment business in the USA and Europe. He is chairman of the Mobile Entertainment Forum Americas, the leading advocate for the Mobile Entertainment industry and principal global trade association established to represent the commercial interests of content, application and service providers, and telco operators. Privately, Mr. Simon is President & CEO of The Mobilium Group, the respected mobile strategic advisory firm that guides US and international media companies, networks and brands to grow revenues and market share from mobile content, mobile entertainment properties and technologies. Prior to his involvement in the global mobile entertainment and content business, where he has taken a leading role since its inception, he had a distinguished career in music, music publishing and mobile technology industries. Ralph Simon is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts in the UK and a member of the National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences in the USA. He maintains offices in Los Angeles, London and Berlin.
