Simon Tindall is the Head of EMEA Business Development for Sun Microsystems in the E ducation sector. His role is to develop new ways of working within the education sector, moving away from the role of traditional IT supplier towards true partnership with customers. Previously Simon was responsible for Sun's UK Education & Research business. He has over 15 years experience within the IT industry, and has been involved with such innovative projects as eUniversity, and the development of research grids across the UK higher education sector.
ANDY WILSON (UK/SE), Founder of Hybrid State AB: Andy specialises in providing inte grated "communication, collaboration and innovation" solutions for private and public organisations. He prefers to work with complexity and dynamics as a central theme and since the turn of the millenium, has worked with Blue Sky research in the fields of design, technology and processes for business development. He has a background from the Brussels based private multi-disciplinary Deep Future Research Centre,Starlab, where he worked as Principal Investigator for the Transarchitecture division. He has collaborated on several large-scale research projects within the EU's Future and Emerging Technologies Initiative and thrives best when working with issues of active participation, sustainability and speed-to-market.
Tommy Strandvall, Manager of MediaCity iDTV Lab at Åbo Akademi University in Vaasa, F inland. Tommy serves as the leader for the unit specialized in industry driven audience research within film, interactive television and web. He is also a part of the exEnteractivity (Experiencing Entertainment in Interactive Television) research project undertaken within iDTV Lab. Tommy has a wide experience from both the academic arena and the media industry, especially interactive television, e-learning, audience research, eye tracking, and psycho physiological measures.
Mike Bloxham, Director, Insight & Research for the Center of Media Design (CMD ), Ball State University: Mike is responsible for developing and delivering the research agenda at CMD, industry liaison and methodological R&D. He champions research in interactive television, eye tracking and usability testing, the Digital Home and Heathcare Facility, the Digital Middletown Initiative, and was part of the team that produced the ground-breaking Middletown Media Studies - observational research that measured the exposure of 400 people to fifteen different media and seventeen different life activities throughout the day in 15-second increments. He works with faculty and the Universitys upper administration to develop new immersive educational experiences for Ball students and with industry partners to on projects that seek to enhance our understanding of the impact of emerging media platforms, content and business models. He has worked in media research and consulting for 17 years and his clients have included Microsoft, Cablevision, BSkyB, Le Monde, Procter & Gamble, MTVEurope, Time Warner and the British Government.
Geoff Lowe, CEO and founder of Filmserve: Geoff Lowe has a 20+ year career in film and television production and has spent the last nine years working in digital media. He is CEO and founder of Filmserve, a UK digital media company specializing in interactive & cross platform content and technologies. Filmserve has developed the Avalon interactive platform for digital cinemas and other digital venues. Avalon allows audiences to use their mobile phones, pdas and other wireless devices to engage with next generation content such as interactive dramas, games, documentaries and digital hybrids. Having started his career as a writer in British television, Geoff believes that digital media and interactivity are key drivers for next generation entertainment across all platforms but traditional creative skills such as writing and directing are equally important. Besides launching the Avalon system, Filmserve is currently developing a range of cross platform and interactive properties for entertainment and consumer markets with partners in the UK and around the world. Geoff has spoken and mentored at digital media events in UK, Australia, Europe and Canada.
Paul Kafno is a graduate of Oxford University where he won an Open Exhibition. A tele vision producer, director and writer with 35 years professional experience in creating drama, documentary, music, education and sports, at BBC, Thames Television and HD Thames, his programmes have won international prizes (Prix Italia, Royal Television Society, British Academy of Film and Television Awards, Golden Gate and Prix Gemini) been broadcast throughout the world and widely distributed on DVD. While Managing Director of HD Thames, he created major international successes with Les Miserables, Hey Mr Producer, The Complete Works of William Shakespeare Abridged, as well as sports events in HD such as the Lillehammer Winter Olympics, World Ice Skating Championships and World Cup. A pioneer of British HD , he has taken a leading role in developing software and hardware tools for the creative industries, through European and UK collaborative research projects such as CINENET Europes first digital cinema project) , E- THEATRE & THALIA (Electronic Theatre events), VIRTUAL CAMERAMAN (remote tracking) , VISIONS (virtual reality software for prototyping movies), VISTA (dynamic storyboards for commercials), V-MAN (virtual actors),CROSS MEDIA CONTENT (tools for interactivity, CELLULOID TO SILICON (UK digital cinema ), and INSCAPE ( tools for virtual storytelling). Paul is a reviewer for IST and EPSRC, has delivered/published papers and key-notes at many international conferences and events, and currently holds a senior research fellowship at the University of Nottingham. His company Park Pictures develops new media content and services. Publications include Reflections from a Hobby Horse (Springer Verlag), the Broadcast Engineers Reference Book (Focal), HDTV the Essential Guide for TV Professionals (DTG). A member of the Council of IBC, he has served as President of the Nombre dOr, and is a member of the British Academy of Film and Television Arts.
