The Rush to Mobile Video: Establishing and Monetizing a Revolutionary Entertainment and Communications Medium
Mobile communications has effectively and successfully integrated itself into our daily lives as the primary personal and business communications vehicle and daily usage is only accelerating. With every new feature and service provided, the acceptance and adaptation of mobile as the broadband, audio, video and text based consumer information and entertainment accessory is continually reinforced. The entertainment, information and technology industries have effectively joined forces in providing the consumer with one of the most readily adapted and embraced consumer products ever devised. The question of whether the consumer is willing to accept video as a mobile service is no longer in question. In the coming year, the industry will experiment with new and enhanced products and services, with video, audio and text features and it will be the consumer who will sort out the hits from the misses. Video and broadband is now the dominant vision for the future of mobile consumer adaptation.

Stanley Fertig Stanley Fertig is senior vice president of HBO International, overseeingh the pay television companys mobile businesses outside the US. Under his leadership, HBO has recently launched a multi-country mobile television service available on Vodafone Live!, including full episodes of some of HBOs most celebrated shows. Fertigs duties at HBO also include te development of international programming services on other new platforms, and sitting on the boards of directors of HBO Asia and HBO Central Europe. Previously, Fertig was senior vice president of acquisitions and business development at Columbia Music Entertainment, a Tokyo-listed independent music & entertainment company, overseeing international distribution, digital distribution and acquisitions. During the 1990s, Fertig held a series of positions at Time Warner, where he pioneered localized television by creating ad-supported television channel ventures in Europe, Asia and Latin America. Fertig is best known as the creator of VIVA, the highly acclaimed music television channel in Germany, recently purchased by MTV. His other network credits include Hamburg-1, the first local television channel in Germanys second-largest city, Channel [V], the leading music television service in Asia, and Z+ (now also MTV), Hungarys music television channel. Fertig also provided assistance in the development of n-tv, Germanys news channel, and Music Choice Europe (now Sky Music Choice), the platform for ad-free digital music via cable and satellite. Fertig holds a B.A. degree from Columbia College, an M.A. from New York University, an MBA from the Yale School of Management, and a PhD from Harvard University. He and his family live in New York.
Graeme Ferguson, Director, Global Content Development, Vodafone Group Services Ltd Graeme Ferguson joined Vodafone in August 2002 to lead the Content Development Team for Vodafone Group Services Ltd. This team is Vodafone Groups central content broker providing a single-focus point for the development of Vodafones content strategy and the commercial relationships with leading multi-market content providers, key media owners and premium rights holders. Graemes focus is to ensure Vodafones customers continue to have access to the best range of world-class premium content and services. He leads the development of the business models and value chains that will help create a viable commercial ecosystem for mainstream content owners. Graeme headed negotiations with some of the worlds best-known media brands, including Warner Brothers, SonyBMG and UEFA Champions League. He also secured the English Premier league football rights for the UK. Graeme was responsible for leading the launch of new rich-media content on Vodafone live! with 3G, including full-track music from the worlds leading record labels, Europes first 3D games and the first-ever launch of made-for-mobile content, 24: Conspiracy, a joint-initiative with 20th Century Fox. Graeme brings with him a great deal of invaluable experience in interactive and traditional broadcast media in general and next generation (3G) mobile content in particular. Most recently he was Vice President of Business Development at Worldzap, a pioneer in the distribution of premium sport video clips including FIFA World Cup over 3G networks. Prior to this, Graeme was employed as Director of Business Development (Europe) of QuokkaSports.com, a broadband sports start-up, headquartered in San Francisco. As part of the senior management team, Graemes role was to develop and maximise revenue opportunities and acquire premium rights for the company in Europe. He also spent several years working at NBC and CNBC International where he held a variety of responsibilities in developing international and regional commercial initiatives, as well as planning for the launch of CNBCEurope.com.
Peter Mercier is Director of Business Development for MobiTV (Europe) Limited with m ore than ten years experience in mobile media, content, and pay television. Based in London, Peter is responsible for sales and business development in the EMEA region for the worlds leading mobile television services provider, MobiTV, licensing technology, managing key accounts and closing international content licenses. Peter joined MobiTV in October 2005 from T-Mobile International where he worked as a Director of Alliances and Partnerships, responsible for content and marketing licenses on a pan European basis. Peter also has extensive experience in UK pay television launching digital channels, interactive services, and managing a business development team at ITV in London and Cable & Wireless Communications.
Jason Wells, Senior Vice President, Mobile Entertainment , Sony Pictures Television In ternational: Jason Wells was appointed senior vice president, mobile entertainment, in March 2006. Based at SPTIs European headquarters in London, Wells heads an international group within SPTI dedicated to extending Sony Pictures Entertainments (SPE) theatrical and TV assets, as well as its range of custom-made mobile content, into mobile distribution outside the United States. With product such as the Spider-Man 2 feature film, the award-winning Ratchet and Clank Going Mobile game adaptation from the popular Sony PlayStation franchise, and the Da Vinci Code mobile content, SPTI is the international distribution and marketing arm for SPEs portfolio of mobile content including mobile games, tones, images, video and text programs. Wells brings with him years of experience in business development, management consulting and business launch strategy. Most recently he was vice president of business development for Handango, where he directed the content and distribution business units. Prior to Handango, Wells was founder and president of Globient Corp, where he opened new channels in Europe, Asia and Latin America for technology companies. As a former management consultant with AT Kearney, Wells worked with telecommunications giants such as Sprint and Telstra to launch and grow new businesses. He has worked extensively throughout Europe, Asia and Latin America in channel development, marketing and strategy roles. His professional experience includes a tenure at Marriott International where he was instrumental in establishing new ventures. Wells has a master's degree in business administration from the Wharton School, a master of arts degree in economics from the University of Utah and a bachelor of arts degree in economics from Brigham Young University.
Stuart Collingwood, Vice President of Europe for Sling Media, Inc.: Stuart Collingwood has been involved in the development of high technology companies for 16 years across a range of markets including digital television, Telecoms, Internet and Financial services. Executive roles include 4 years as VP EMEA for Liberate Technologies where he successfully led the growth of the European operation, and 8 years at Fujitsu-ICL in a variety of roles including Business manager - Media, driving the companys move into systems integration projects for network operators. Crucial experience has been gained in managing relationships and securing £M+ deals with major network operators across Europe, developing effective sales strategies and channel partnerships, identifying and hiring key personnel, and dealing with leading press and analysts through interviews and industry panels. In-house research focuses on the commercialisation of platforms that support emerging DVB-H (broadcast tv to Mobile) standard. Educated at Bath University (2.1 Bsc Hons in Economics) and St.Pauls school London, Stuart is married with one daughter. His spare time is spent cycling long distances and composing music.
Ingrid Silver, Partner, Technology, Media and Telecoms department, Denton Wilde Sapte: I ngrid is a partner in the Technology, Media and Telecoms (TMT) department at Denton Wilde Sapte. Denton Wilde Sapte is a leading international law firm, which comprises a team of specialists dedicated to the TMT sector. Ingrid has been involved in the media and communications sector for over 10 years. She advises a wide range of clients including large corporates and cutting edge new market entrants in the TMT sector with a particular focus on new media services such as interactive and mobile content services and convergence. Born and raised in Australia, her practice is truly international as she is a native French speaker and fluent German speaker, and has lived, studied and worked in several countries across Europe. She regularly speaks at conferences and writes about her areas of specialization.
