Professor Lizbeth Goodman has joined UEL as the newly appointed Chair of Creative Technology Innovation, and Director of the SMARTlab Digital Media Institute & MAGIC Gamelab and PLAYroom. New labs, development studios and an expanded Practice-based PhD Programme have just been launched in the Thames Gateway, with major collaborative projects underway across the spectrum of ‘gaming for non-gamers’, : Professor Goodman directs studies for a group of professional new media artists registered with CSM on the SMARTlab's customised live and online Practice-based PhD programme.- one of the world’s largest and most successful cross-discplinary cohorts of higher level research grounded in community need and creative industry theory and practice. SMARTlab is an agency for social change, operating a core research unit and two /wings’ spanning the cultural outreach and creative industries sectors, with partners in major NGO and Industry companies worldwide. SMARTlab is the UK base for the Peoplelab Accessible tech programme, and for the Microsoft Clubtech Programme, which Professor Goodman has led in its critical review stages (as the largest project providing game and educational technology tools to over 4 million under-privleged young people worldwide). Lizbeth is also known as a professional performer and presenter, with many years of experience in live and telematic writing, improvisation, performance and direction. She has worked extensively in comedy and theatre and television/convergent media entertainment, and has recently won commissions to create a new style of empowering online and live performance game. Much of SMARTlab’s work focuses on application of Universal Design methods to the domain of community inclusion and empowerment. As head of the SPIRITLEVEL consortium- a group that has worked across national borders and disciplines to create bio-sensor and live performance experiences for children and adults in need of physical therapy and rehabilitation.

Paul Lefrere, PhD, is Microsoft’s Executive Director for eLearning, and is based in the Education Solutions Group in Microsoft EMEA. His highly-influential book, "Transforming e-Knowledge", co-authored with thought leaders from Australia and the USA, looks at the coming "Knowledge Society". He is also Professor of eLearning at the University of Tampere, Finland, linked with the hypermedia laboratory (Tampere) and the vocational learning and eSkills centre (Hameenlinna). Prior to joining Microsoft, he was Policy Adviser at the Open University, UK. There, he chaired the MBA programme in the strategic management of technology. He was also Academic Director of a number of international multi-university projects concerned with the use of ICT, e-skills and technology enhanced learning for innovation in higher education, and for stimulating competitiveness, job creation, and economic development. He currently serves on various European and national advisory groups, and also on the Public Policy Group of the eLearning Industry Group.

David Dunkley Gyimah is a 2006 American Press Institute Fellow and a 2005 First Place Winner in the US' Batten Awards for Innovation in Journallism - the only British entrant to be shortlisted in an event that attracts the creme of broadcasters and Newspaper and Magazine publishers. David was one of the first Video journalists in the UK (1994) and since then has worked with a number of bodies e.g. Nato, SABC, Lennox Lewis and trained a number of bodies. He is a director of the UK's broadcast-academia governing body, The Broadcast Journalism Training Council and has been a member of the Royal Institute for International Affairs for more than a decade. David has worked in the media, both in front and behind the camera for National and International broadcast networks, digital media agencies, radio and print for 18 years. He has reported from Apartheid South Africa and filmed countless international assignemnts. He has worked or freelanced for BBC Newsnight, WTN, Reportage, ABC News, BBC World Service, Channel 4 News, PowerHouse, Breakfast News.

Jerry Fishenden MPhil BSc FBCS CITP FIMIS FIAP, Microsoft's National Technology Officer for the UK: Jerry Fishenden is Microsoft UK's lead technology advisor and spokesman on the value and implications of present and future technological developments - and their impact on public policy. As NTO, Jerry is responsible for helping to develop Microsoft's vision around the use of IT for transforming the way we learn, live and work. Prior to joining Microsoft Jerry worked in a variety of senior positions in the public sector, including as head of business systems for the UK’s chief financial services regulator in the City of London; as an Officer of the House of Commons, establishing the Parliamentary Data and Video Network at the Houses of Parliament; and as a Director of IT in the National Health Service (NHS). Microsoft National Technology Officers cover a range of topics including local economic development, standards, interoperability, privacy and security, technical and high performance computing and various other related programmes. They work closely with key figures inside and outside of the public sector, the media, analysts and professional associations, as well as with Redmond product groups – to help ensure that the Microsoft vision and future technologies meet public sector requirements. Jerry has been closely involved with the UK’s e-government programme since 1997. He has played an active role in helping resolve complex policy aspects relating to user identity management, security, transactional services, open standards and interoperability. He has also been involved in the strategic development of the UK Government Gateway (the UK government’s national solution for user identity and transactional services). As well as being a frequent contributor to the media, Jerry's articles have appeared in numerous mainstream and trade publications and recent appearances on national television programmes include BBC News 24 and BBC Radio 4 and Radio 5. He is also active on the international conference circuit, providing keynotes and other speeches at various events. He is the author of numerous Microsoft whitepapers, including The Foundation for e-Government Services presented at the Government Leaders Conference in 2002, Advancing with Technology, A Vision for Local and Regional Government, published in EMEA in 2004 and Government Interoperability: Enabling the Delivery of e-Services, published 2005. He is also a co-author of the recently released paper The New World of Government Work, which aims to stimulate discussion on some of the most profound challenges confronting government and society - that of a global connected world and an ageing society. Jerry recently acted as an expert witness to the House of Commons Science and Technology Committee inquiry into scientific advice, risk and evidence and the extent to which it impacts public policy. He represents Microsoft on a variety of policy-influencing bodies, including the DTI/Intellect Grid Computing Now! Advisory Board (shaping the UK's development of grid computing), the EURIM Personal Identity and Data Sharing Subgroups, and the UK's Knowledge Transfer Network dedicated to Trusted Computing. He sat in an independent capacity on Oxford University's ICT Steering Group (designing the strategy for the next generation federated ICT structure for the Oxford colleges) and was a member of the e-Smart 2006 Scientific Committee, as well as appearing on the expert panel on the future of the smartcard industry. He was a key speaker at the recent London School of Economics hosted event with the United Nations' Markus Kummer, contributing to a workshop looking at aspects of identity, privacy and security on the Internet: a topic he will be returning to during a workshop at the UN's Internet Governance Forum event in Athens in October. He has also been active in leading Microsoft's Founder membership and activities with the Enterprise Privacy Group. Jerry holds a Master of Philosophy (MPhil) in the application of artificial intelligence techniques to composition from City University (London). He is a Fellow with Chartered status of the British Computer Society (FBCS CITP), a Fellow of the Institute for the Management of Information Systems (FIMIS) and a Fellow of the Institution of Analysts and Programmers (FIAP). He is married with one son and in his spare time relaxes by composing music and enjoying time with his family.

Mike Bloxham, Director, Insight & Research for the Center of Media Design (CMD), Ball State University: Mike is responsible for developing and delivering the research agenda at CMD, industry liaison and methodological R&D. He champions research in interactive television, eye tracking and usability testing, the Digital Home and Heathcare Facility, the Digital Middletown Initiative, and was part of the team that produced the ground-breaking Middletown Media Studies - observational research that measured the exposure of 400 people to fifteen different media and seventeen different life activities throughout the day in 15-second increments. He works with faculty and the University’s upper administration to develop new immersive educational experiences for Ball students and with industry partners to on projects that seek to enhance our understanding of the impact of emerging media platforms, content and business models. He has worked in media research and consulting for 17 years and his clients have included Microsoft, Cablevision, BSkyB, Le Monde, Procter & Gamble, MTVEurope, Time Warner and the British Government.
