DRM Implementation in Media and Entertainment: From Standardization to Implementation of New Technology Strategies
Content is what the entertainment and media industry produce, and the viability of the industrys future rests on its ability to manage its content and control its distribution while at the same time making it available to an ever larger customer base. And that is the job of the DRM technology industry, to make the film, music and mobile technology delivery systems safe for mass use. In this session, we will explore, from the point of view of the technology companies, the possibilities and potential of DRM in the evolving content landscape. From CDs and DVDs to broadband and wireless delivery, DRM and content protection represents the bottom line of the future of our industries.

Donald E. Leake, Program Director for Copy Protection Business Development, IBM R esearch Division: Don Leake brings over 35 years of IBM experience in the IT industry to his current position of program director for copy protection business development, IBM Research Division. Leake is responsible for promoting the use of IBMs extensive portfolio of content protection technologies in IBMs products and industry initiatives as the use of rich digital media becomes pervasive in entertainment and IT applications. IBMs content protection technologies include encryption, watermarking, fingerprinting and software tamper resistance. Leake also works closely with the Media and Entertainment Industry, in its transition to digital, through his participation in standards organizations, consortia, alliances and multi-company working relationships. As such, Leake is currently the lead IBM representative to the 4C group, AACS, the Copy Protection Technical Working Group, Digital Living Network Alliance, the DVD Forum and the Pro-MPEG Forum. Previously, Leake managed the marketing, sales and customer support functions for the group in IBM Microelectronics Division that develops MPEG and set top box chips. In this role, Leake was responsible for establishing IBM leadership in the digital media chip business. Prior to that, Mr. Leake held a number of marketing and product planning management positions in IBMs high-end and mid-range systems development organizations, including managing product planning for IBMs largest commercial servers. Mr. Leake started his IBM career as a customer support rep in the field sales organization. Mr. Leake holds a Batchelor of Science degree in Mathematics and Masters of Science degree in Statistics, both from Penn State University.
Steve Oetegenn, EVP, Verimatrix: Steve Oetegenn's career in the Information Technology industry spans 25 years. He has a wide range of experience in international business, having launched numerous high tech products to the global marketplace. He began his career with Burroughs Corporation (now UNISYS) as a specialist for Optical Character Recognition Systems. He has specialized in Digital Security and Anti-Piracy since 1998, working with Government agencies, Fortune 500 companies and Major Hollywood studios. Prior to joining Verimatrix, he was COO of MediaSec Technologies LLC, a pioneer and leader in the field of digital watermarking, COO of Argus Systems Group, a leading provider of Internet server security software, and CEO of DCE Communication Ltd, a world-wide provider of business messaging systems. Mr. Oetegenn has spoken at numerous global digital security conferences, he also speaks fluent German.
Reed Stager is chairman of the Digital Watermarking Alliance (DWA), a group of co mpanies that share a common interest in furthering the adoption of digital watermarking and which are actively involved in commercialization of digital watermarking-based technology, applications, systems, and services. Additionally, he serves as Executive Vice President of Digimarc and leads Digimarc's Media and Entertainment initiatives and the companys intellectual property licensing, corporate and marketing communications, and public policy activities. He also currently serves as chair of the Government Affairs Committee of the Document Security Alliance (DSA), on the board of the International Imaging Industry Association, and on the Portland Citizens Crime Commission. Mr. Stager has over 20 years experience in high technology marketing, business development, strategic planning, services and operations. Prior to joining Digimarc in May of 2000, he was vice president of marketing and business development for the PVCS Division of MERANT, Inc. from April 1997 to May 2000. From April 1993 through March 1997, Mr. Stager was general manager of In Focus Systems Services businesses and director of worldwide marketing at In Focus Systems. Previously, he held management positions at Tektronix and Mentor Graphics. Mr. Stager holds an M.B.A. from Portland State University and a B.S. in Business from Lewis and Clark College.
Paul Erickson, market analyst within IMS Researchs Digital Consumer & Broadband Division, has extensive experience researching the worldwide markets for digital TV, set-top boxes, and integrated digital TVs. He is also responsible for managing IMS Researchs online Digital TV Market Intelligence Service and Television Database. Before joining IMS Research, Mr. Erickson spent years in the computer hardware and software sectors as an analyst conducting competitive intelligence and formulating market strategy. He received his BS in International Business from Georgetown University, and an MBA in Marketing from the University of Texas at Austin. In his role as an analyst, Mr. Erickson brings to bear a passion for technology, the ability to communicate in five languages, and a diverse mix of experience that includes companies such as Dell, Citibank, Compaq, Silicon Graphics, Vignette, and Tivoli Systems / IBM.
Randall Crockett, Senior Vice President, DRM Networks: With over 25 years of e xperience promoting products through the entertainment industry, Randall Crockett has recently worked to develop methods of distributing entertainment and information to the masses through the use of the Internet. As a director of DRM Networks, he now uses his expertise to promote secure methods of distribution that allow for new and innovative business models. Randall began his career in entertainment by promoting events in Southern California for the legendary Mickey Thompson where he managed the Off-Road Championship Grand Prix and the Superbowl of Motocross. After the death of Mickey Thompson, Randall founded one of the worlds first event marketing firms, PR Crockett in Irvine, California. PR Crockett topped out at 75 employees and worked closely with both events and the sponsors of those events including, Coors, Proctor and Gamble, Dodge, The City of Los Angeles Marathon, Long Beach Grand Prix, American Heart Association and many more. In all, PR Crockett provided resources and sponsorships for over 100 events annually. PR Crockett was eventually sold and Randall moved to Aspen, Colorado with the intention of skiing and relaxing for a bit but quickly found himself engaged in the start up of many other businesses centered on the recreation market. Eventually this brought him again to involvement with live events though this time focused on concert and festival promotions. In 1998, Randall was recruited to join the newly established management team at the Celebrity Theatre, a world class entertainment venue in Phoenix, Arizona. Utilizing his expertise in marketing, the Celebrity Theatre quickly grew to over 100 shows a year most of which sold out. Provided with that success, Randall partnered with other visionaries and founded a new concept in entertainment to bring live concerts and sporting events to audiences via the internet. Though early adoption for the Web Theatre concept was limited, Randall continued to pursue and analogize the importance of online media and has been vigilant in developing resources that can accommodate users much like himself, to make online digitals media a accessible to anyone with content. In 2001, Randall took over a division of CWIE Holdings company, the parent company of CCBill where he continued to develop an idea that online media sales would lead the way of digital content sales. Today DRM Networks boast such clientele as Disney, ABC, Peer Impact (which represents the Big 4 Record Labels), Hewlett Packard and many more. Through the DRM system, over 6,000,000 digital media files are distributed and sold monthly. Mr. Crockett is active with many organizations both professionally and as a volunteer that cover a fast area including Broadcasting, Internet Deployment and civic organization.
Richard LeVine, Senior Manager, Global Architecture and Core Technologies, Accenture: Rick LeVine is an Experienced Senior Manager in Accentures Global Architecture and Core Technologies organization.He is Accentures thought leader in the Digital Rights Management space, and is driving significant IPTV and Digital Convergence work. Mr. Levine has held V.P. of Engineering and C.T.O. positions in the software industry, and has led technology and business partnerships between Fortune 200 Technology firms. He has nearly two decades deep technology, product creation and delivery, architecture, and management experience. He has earned a Masters in Computer Science, and a 2003 MIT Sloan Master of Science in the Management of Technology degree. Rick is also the author of several published Digital Rights Management and Security Patents
