Television 2.0: Cable, Telco, Satellite, Broadband & Mobile Redefine the Future of Entertainment and Communications
The television experience has now officially graduated from its status as entertainment king of the living room, to the central component of the entire electronic consumer experience. Television 2.0 has now arrived and it includes cable – with all of its integrated services of PVR, DRV, VOD, Broadband, Wireless, VoIP and Mobile as a communications as well as scalable video provider of clips and updates to movies and full programming. The competition for the future of Television 2.0 has just begun. There will be no immediate winner, and there will probably never be a winner. With 250 million consumers in this country to service and a global market to reach out to, the media, entertainment and technology companies are not competing in a zero sum marketing arena. In this session, we will address these issues and more.

Samuel Schwartz, President, Comcast Interactive Capital, Executive Vice President of Strategy and Development, Comcast Interactive Media: Sam Schwartz is President and a Founding Managing Partner of Comcast Interactive Capital (CIC), a $350 million venture capital fund affiliated with Comcast Corporation, a diversified global leader in cable television, broadband services, telecommunications, and programming. CIC's goals are to generate financial returns from venture investments in private technology companies and to seek strategic benefits for Comcast through those partnerships. Sam leads CIC and also focuses on broadband and interactive technologies. Sam is also Executive Vice President of Strategy & Development at Comcast Interactive Media (CIM), a new division dedicated to developing and growing Comcast’s emerging Internet businesses, including the comcast.net site. Sam also advises and participates at Comcast on strategic issues related to new products, technology and important trends. Prior to joining Comcast in March of 1999, Sam spent time as an investor in communications and software companies. Prior to his work in venture capital, Sam was a Manager at The Boston Consulting Group and a consultant at Booz, Allen & Hamilton. Sam began his career as a software engineer. Sam holds a Master of Business Administration in Finance from The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, graduating as a Palmer Scholar, and received a Bachelor of Science in Engineering from the University of Pennsylvania's School of Engineering & Applied Science.

Lynne Costantini is Senior Vice President and Chief Business Affairs Officer at Time Warner Cable, a position she has held since October 2006. She leads the team responsible for negotiating and executing the Company’s commercial transactions with a wide range of business partners, working closely with ATG, TSG, and Product Management, among others. Prior to this position, Costantini spent ten years in TWC’s Programming Department, most recently as its Senior Vice President of Programming. In this role, Costantini was responsible for negotiating content deals with broadcasters and content companies on a national and local basis across multiple platforms. She was instrumental in securing first-to-market content deals for the Company’s advanced media platforms, most notably digital cable, SVOD, free on demand and Start Over. Prior to joining the Company in 1996, Costantini practiced law for ten years specializing in mergers and acquisitions with two major New York firms: Morgan, Lewis & Bockius and Kelley, Drye & Warren. A participant in industry activities, Costantini serves on the Executive Committee of the Board of Directors for Women in Cable and Telecommunications, Inc. (WICT) and was recently recognized by Cable World as one of the Top 50 Most Influential Woman in Cable and was named by Multichannel News in 2004 as a Wonder Woman. She completed the CTAM University Executive Education Program at the Kellogg Graduate School of Management at Northwestern University as well as Columbia University’s Executive Education Program in Finance. She is a graduate of the Betsy Magness Leadership Institute, a year-long program exclusive to senior women executives in the cable industry. Costantini received a J.D. from New York Law School in 1984 and a B.A. in Economics from Manhattanville College in 1982. She resides in Connecticut with her husband and children.

Tara Maitra – Vice President, General Manager of Programming, TiVo: Tara Maitra serves as Vice President, General Manager of Programming for TiVo. In this role, Maitra is responsible for cultivating relationships with content companies and unique content offerings for delivery via broadband. Previously, Maitra served as Senior Director of content development at Comcast, where she was responsible for day-to-day operations of Select on Demand, a collection of new niche non-linear networks delivered via video on-demand and broadband. Maitra helped to create new channels through partnerships, acquisitions and original programming. Prior to Comcast, Maitra was Executive Vice President, General Manager of Primedia Digital Video, where she developed on-demand and broadband video businesses for Primedia's established print franchises. Her accomplishments include launching video services on Comcast and Real Networks. Ms. Maitra also held a series of editorial and management positions at NBC, including Vice President, General Manager of CNBC/Dow Jones Business Video, a joint venture of NBC, Microsoft and Dow Jones. There she led the development and managed one of the first profitable streaming video web sites to offer financial content thru both subscription and syndication models. A graduate of Washington and Lee University, located in Lexington, Virginia, Ms. Maitra holds a B.A. in Journalism and Psychology.

Richard B. Anderson, IBM General Manager, Global Media & Entertainment Industry: Richard B. (Dick) Anderson has the global responsibility for the worldwide strategy, marketing, business development, industry solutions and product offerings for the Entertainment, Sports, Broadcast, Cable, Publishing and Advertising businesses throughout the world. He brings over twenty years of achievement, quantifiable results, and IBM know-how to his current positions as general manager for IBM’s Media & Entertainment Industry. Mr. Anderson has responsibility for IBM’s Media and Entertainment clients worldwide, and establishes new and innovative business strategies designed to securely position IBM as a digital solution and technological leader. He oversees global marketing, sales and solutions development for IBM’s media and entertainment customers worldwide, including broadcasting, publishing, advertising, sports, and new media. Previously, Mr. Anderson was general manager, enterprise Web management, where he was instrumental in accelerating IBM’s transformation into the world’s premier e-business, and was responsible for the development and implementation of enterprise-wide strategies for IBM’s use of the internet, highlighted by the restructuring and unification of IBM’s numerous Internet and Intranet Web sites. In addition, Anderson’s leadership also delivered increases in e-commerce and procurement via the web for IBM business partners, all of which resulted in over $1 billion of cost/expense savings. Prior to that position, he was general manager network services, IBM Global Services. Network services included the IBM Global Network, one of the world’s largest data networks. Since joining IBM in 1974, Mr. Anderson has held a succession of management positions including general manager, IBM Global Services, IBM Asia-Pacific; vice president, Networking Marketing, IBM United States, and regional manager, Los Angeles. He is a 1974 graduate of Stanford University and attended the Sloan School of Management at MIT in 1986-87 as an IBM Sloan Fellow.

George Kliavkoff, Chief Digital Officer, NBC Universal: George Kliavkoff was named as NBC Universal's first Chief Digital Officer in August 2006. Kliavkoff is responsible for furthering the Company's digital media strategy and developing new business models and markets. He also oversees the operations of new broadband and wireless efforts as well as digital innovation and product development, portal and partner relationships, and the Digital Studios, which produces unique, original and interactive content for all digital platforms. Prior to joining NBC Universal, Kliavkoff was with Major League Baseball Advance Media (MLBAM). As Executive Vice President, Business, Kliavkoff was responsible for MLBAM's New Media licensing business and for all business development related to baseball's interactive media unit. His responsibilities included licensing all technology necessary to build and maintain the online and IP-delivered assets of MLB and its 30 baseball Clubs. Kliavkoff also oversaw MLBAM's search strategy and its games (console, internet, mobile and fantasy) licensing programs. This past March, he was named as one of Sports Business Journal's "Forty Under 40," a list celebrating the 40 most influential sports executives under the age of 40. Prior to MLBAM, Kliavkoff ran the business development group for RealNetworks' consumer division and was responsible for developing partner relationships and exploiting revenue opportunities related to technology and content licensing. He was among the senior management group that created the company's online media subscription services, including RealOne SuperPass, generating more than a million retained, paying customers. In addition, Kliavkoff's team was responsible for negotiating all deals necessary to build and distribute RealNetworks' various consumer products and services. Before joining RealNetworks, Kliavkoff was an attorney with prestigious law firms in Los Angeles and Seattle. Kliavkoff holds a BS in Journalism from Boston University's College of Communication and a JD from the University of Virginia's School of Law.

Ty Ahmad-Taylor, Vice President, Product Development, MTV Networks and Logo: Ty Ahmad-Taylor, Senior Director, Interactive Products, Comcast Cable: Ty Ahmad-Taylor began his career at the New York Times in their graphics department, working in National and International news. While there, he covered the Waco, TX standoff, the Los Angeles riots, the Gulf War, the Oklahoma City bombing and other large news events from a visual perspective, using schematics, databases and cartography. In 1995, his last year at the paper, he wrote articles on the emerging Internet, special effects in cinema, and the video game industry. From the Times he moved West to join the @Home Network. Ty became the Creative Director of @Home in 1997, and led their efforts to create next-generation portals for broadband and interactive television. After a year sabbatical in 2000, where he took cooking and French lessons, he returned to technology, working as the Chief Creative Architect for MetaTV, an iTV concern based in Mill Valley, CA, just north of San Francisco. While there, Ty generated user interface patents, and led the design of interactive television portals for Comcast, Cox, Echostar and other MSO and satellite operators. After working at Comcast Cable Corporation as the Director of Strategic Planning in their broadband group, where his mandate included devising and executing Comcast’s wireless (GPRS, UMTS and WiFi) strategy, and interactive content and applications. He was the Senior Director for Cross-platform applications at the company. His job duties encompassed applications that straddle distribution channels, such as search, games and music. He is currently the Vice President for Product Development at MTV Networks in New York City, working on their music websites as well as the infusion of online community throughout their properties. Ty has over 11 years of experience in designing for broadband, 10 years in interactive television, and 17 years in information design. He has lectured at Digital Hollywood, CES, Milia, AIGA conferences, HOW Design Conferences, Seybold Seminars, as well as the Poynter Institute for Journalism in St. Petersberg, Fla. Ty lives in New York City, though he is originally from the San Francisco Bay Area.

Shahid Khan, Partner, Interactive Broadband Consulting, LLC: Shahid Khan is responsible for developing and leading major client engagements, particularly in the Content space, and is also responsible for the firm's PR and Thought Leadership. Shahid is a seasoned Business and Operations Strategist with strong technology underpinnings and expertise in the Media & Entertainment, Telecommunications and Information Technology industries. He is an acclaimed thought leader, who has been focused on the Digital Media and eBusiness for the last decade, as well as on how disruptive technologies such as internet, broadband, IP and mobile are impacting the Media Industry. He has spent his career of managing senior level executive relationships and working with clients to diagnose their strategic, operational and technological issues and develop innovative solutions to address them. Over the course of his career, Shahid has served leading Media firms such as Bertelsmann, Sony BMG, Warner Music Group, Thomson, Viacom, RIAA, etc. Prior to joining IBB Consulting, Shahid was a Managing Director at BearingPoint (formerly KPMG Consulting) in the Media & Entertainment Industry Practice, responsible for leading BearingPoint’s client relationships and engagements in the Entertainment and Information Services industry segments, and for leading the development of the firm’s Solutions and Thought Leadership in the Digital Content space. Previously, Shahid was a Client Services Partner at IBM Global Services (IGS), where he led the activities of the various arms of IGS focusing on East Coast based Publishing and Entertainment clients. Shahid has also worked at ZEFER, Deloitte Consulting and McGraw Hill, where he participated in and managed Business Strategy, Process Reengineering and IT projects. Shahid holds an MBA in Marketing and Finance from NYU’s Stern School of Business and is a Fellow at U. Penn’s Wharton School of Business. He has published numerous white-papers and articles on topics pertinent to the Media & Telecoms Industry. He is a frequent speaker at leading industry conferences, often quoted in industry publications. Shahid serves on the Board of two technology firms in the mobile and enterprise software space, as well as non-profit organizations that focus on literacy and entrepreneurship.
