Thursday, February 8 9:15 AM - 10:15 AM Keynote Speaker Rupert Murdoch, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, News Corporation Rupert Murdoch is Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of News Corporation, one of the world’s largest diversified media companies. News Corporation’s global operations include newspaper and magazine publishing on three continents; significant book publishing interests; major motion picture and television production and distribution operations; and television, satellite and cable broadcast operations in the United States, Europe, Asia, Australia and Latin America. In 1954, Mr. Murdoch took control of News Limited, an Australian-based public corporation whose only key asset at the time was a majority interest in the number-two daily newspaper in Adelaide, South Australia. Since then Mr. Murdoch has overseen the expansion and development of the Company as it has become the most international of media businesses. In 1960, the Company acquired the Daily Mirror in Sydney and, in 1964, launched a national newspaper, The Australian. In 1969, the Company ventured into the United Kingdom, acquiring the Sunday paper News of the World and later The Sun newspaper. In the 1980s the Company purchased The Times and Sunday Times and HarperCollins Publishers, one of the world’s largest and most prestigious book publishers. News Corporation’s publishing interests now include capital city and suburban newspapers in Australia and the U.K. and The New York Post and The Weekly Standard in the U.S. News Corporation purchased Twentieth Century Fox Film Corporation in 1985. The following year, the Company created the Fox Television Stations group – now comprising 35 stations across the United States – which formed the foundation for the launch of the Fox Broadcasting Company, now a leading U.S. television network. In October 1996, News Corporation launched the Fox News Channel, which is now the top-rating 24-hour news service in the United States. Also on American cable television, News Corporation has successfully established Fox Sports Net, FX and National Geographic Channel, Speed Channel, FUEL, and Fox Reality. In December 2003, News Corporation acquired an interest in Hughes Electronics, since renamed The DIRECTV Group, Inc, whose businesses include the leading American satellite TV broadcaster DIRECTV. Mr. Murdoch is Chairman of The DIRECTV Group and News Corporation now holds 39 percent of the company. In addition, News Corporation is the major shareholder in British Sky Broadcasting, the UK’s first satellite broadcasting operation, launched in 1989 and regarded as the world’s most successful direct-to-home satellite broadcaster. And through its ownership of Hong Kong-based STAR, the first and only pan-Asian satellite broadcast service, acquired in 1993, News Corporation provides a variety of locally oriented programming services to more than 300 million people across Asia, the Indian sub-continent and the Middle East. In 2005, News Corporation formed Fox Interactive Media to manage its growing stable of websites. The company then made a series of acquisitions including: MySpace.com, the world’s largest social networking site, which was purchased as part of Intermix Media; IGN Entertainment, a network of gaming and entertainment sites including AskMen.com and RottenTomatoes.com; and Scout.com, the top collegiate and pro-sports online network. Among News Corporation’s other holdings are the inserts and consumer marketing group News America Marketing, 74 percent of conditional access company NDS and a 41 percent stake in Gemstar-TV Guide International. Mr. Murdoch has been awarded the Companion of the Order of Australia (A.C.) for services to the media and to newspaper publishing in particular. Throughout News Corporation’s history, he and his family have been closely involved with, and made generous contributions to, various educational, cultural, medical and charitable organizations throughout the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, Asia and Israel.
