Embracing the Connected Consumer - Entertainment and Technology - From the Digital Home to the Mobile Universe
In the five years since the burst of the technology bubble, an amazing thing has happened, the technology industry has once again, perhaps more quietly this time, transformed the relationship of the consumer to communications, media, entertainment and technology. . Whether it’s a wirelessly connected home comprised of unlimited content via DTV and HDTV, PDAs, laptops, desktops PCs, a Set-Top connection, IM devices or telephony system; a broadband mobile device, a fully loaded media friendly car, a broadband workspace or public space, the consumer is connected all the time, sending or receiving information and content. In this session, we will explore what it means to create and enable that fully connected universe.

Jan Steenkamp, CEO, Entriq: As CEO of Entriq, Jan Steenkamp brings to the company his extensive experience in pay television operations, gained from a range of management positions within MIH Limited (MIHL) since 1985. Before joining Entriq, Steenkamp was CEO of MIHL’s technology division and Chairman of OpenTV Corp. until August 2002. Prior to this, he was CEO of OpenTV, where he was instrumental in its development as the leading provider of cost-effective solutions for the delivery of digital interactive services to television viewers around the world. Previously, Steenkamp was the Commercial Director of Irdeto Consultants in The Netherlands, and held various management and new business initiative positions at both Irdeto and the MIH Group from 1985 to 1997. During that time, he initiated the introduction of pay television in Greece, managed a project team to establish pay television in Italy, worked with Shinawatra in Thailand to establish digital television, worked with Galaxy in Australia to launch the first DVB digital DTH platform in the world, and was active in the acquisition and development of the European Nethold operations in The Netherlands, Belgium, Finland, Sweden, Denmark and Norway. Steenkamp studied electrical engineering at Witwatersrand Technicon in South Africa and has a television broadcasting background. Today, he is a sought-after speaker on the topics of Pay Media over the Internet and the future of broadband.

Tom Flanagan, Director, Broadband Strategy, Broadband Communications Group, Texas Instruments: Tom Flanagan is Director, Broadband Strategy for Texas Instruments’ Broadband Communications Group. TI’s broadband communications business includes cable modems, digital subscriber line (DSL) modems, integrated access devices (IADs), Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) gateways, carrier infrastructure, and home and office wireless networking. Prior to this, Mr. Flanagan was Director, Business Development for Telogy Networks and Vice President Sales and Marketing for ADC Skyline. Mr. Flanagan also held various marketing, sales and business development positions during a 12 year career with Dynatech Communications. He holds a B.S. degree from James Madison University.



Peter Lee is Vice-President, Business Development New Technology, at The Walt Disney Company in the Corporate Strategic Planning and Corporate New Technology Departments. His responsibilities include creating new businesses for Disney in digital content consumption/delivery and leading the company’s unilateral content protection efforts for all Disney assets worldwide. He recently was a Media Industry Consultant, where he worked for Disney and Fox as an executive consultant in the area of video-on-demand. Prior to this he was the President/CEO of GeoVideo Networks (a Lucent Technology company), the COO/CTO of MyPotential (a well-being company chaired by Deepak Chopra), and CTO/co-founder of Hitplay Media (targeted ad insertion and streaming media content provider). The majority of his career was at IBM, where he was the Global Development Executive for Broadcast and Advertising. His roles at IBM included positions in the Watson Research Center, Federal Systems Division, Media Marketing, and the Interactive Television Group. He has an MS degree from USC and a BS from UCLA. He has eight patents granted and multiple patents pending in the areas of digital ad insertion, content distribution, and portable media players.

Louisa Shipnuck, Global Media and Entertainment Industry Leader for the Institute for Business Value (IBV) and Managing Consultant within IBM’s Business Consulting Services Media and Entertainment practice. For the IBV, Louisa oversees the thought leadership program on Media and Entertainment and has recently co-authored thought pieces, including "The end of television as we know it," which focuses on mid-term success strategies within the TV industry, and "Beyond Access: Raising the Value of Information in a Cluttered Marketplace" which focuses on competitive positioning in the B2B information marketplace. As a strategy consultant with PwC and IBM, Louisa has led and contributed to numerous engagements, helping clients write market feasibility studies, as well as, craft new operational plans, product strategies and consumer services. Clients have included an interactive TV content company, the broadband entertainment group of a large hardware manufacturer, a digital music software developer, and the home entertainment group of a major studio, among many others. Before IBM, Louisa worked as a political media consultant in Washington, DC. She holds an M.B.A. from Columbia Business School and a B.A. from the University of California, Los Angeles.

Barry James Folsom is Motorola Corporate Vice President and General Manager, Connected Home Solutions. Mr. Folsom leads the Home Mobility Solutions business unit, which creates breakthrough products that connect consumers to people and content of strong emotional importance, enabling consumers to focus on connections with who they love and what is important – not the technology that enables it. Prior to his role, Barry James served as a strategic advisor to Motorola’s office of the CEO, helping to shape the company’s Connected Home business strategy. He has over three decades of executive management and strategic marketing experience with a successful track record of transforming companies into rapidly growing category leaders. During Barry James’ tenure as president and CEO of PlaceWare, the company became the fourth-fastest growing private company in Silicon Valley, delivering over 700% growth. At Exodus, Barry James drove a singular focus on Internet Data Centers, reducing the sales cycle by 50% and increased sales 400% in seven months. In addition, Barry James was a Sun executive during its four-year hyper-growth from $100M to $1.7B. As general manager of Sun’s 386i start up East Coast Division, Barry James built the team and its ease-of-use culture. In the early ‘80s, Barry James was an early personal computing pioneer and industry influencer. Known as one of Silicon Valley’s "gadget gurus," Barry James is often sought out for his advice on cell phones, PDAs, PCs, home electronics and home theater. Barry James has a BS Electrical Engineering and a MS Computer Science from Georgia Tech. He serves on Georgia Tech’s College of Computing Advisory Board and is an active mentor for Women’s Unlimited, a leadership development company for executive women. He’s married with four daughters and is an avid scuba diver.

Alexander K. Marquez, Director, Strategic Investments, Intel Capital, Intel Corporation: Alexander is responsible for Intel Capital’s strategic investment strategies and related investments in the areas of Digital Media & Entertainment, part of Intel Capital’s Digital Home fund. Currently, Alexander devotes much of his time to defining strategies in Premium Content Services & Distribution and next generation advertising models. Previously, Alexander was responsible for Intel Capital’s investments and related strategies in Education/E-Learning. Some of his investments include Zinio – provider of electronic magazines, Envivio – a leading provider of H264 systems, Gametrust – best known for the Gameframe platform for enabling tournament based gaming, Akella – the leading gaming developer/publisher in Moscow and BlackArrow and early stage company developing interactive television advertising solutions. Prior to joining Intel Capital, Alexander served as technical advisor to the senior vice president of Intel’s Interactive Media Services division where he advised on strategy and media investments. Alexander also served as controller for Intel’s Content Services division where he oversaw financial aspects of the division, including numerous investments in Europe, Japan, Asia, and Latin America. Alexander joined Intel Corporation in 1994 where he held various management roles prior to joining Intel Capital. Alexander holds a Bachelors of Science in Electrical Engineering from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas where he is also Chairman of the Electrical and Computer Engineering Visitors Board and serves as an advisor to the Entertainment Engineering program. He received his Masters of Business Administration from Purdue University.

Kris Alexander, Media and Entertainment Specialist, Akamai Technologies: Kris Alexander has an accomplished record as a marketing professional and business development entrepreneur in the high technology and media & entertainment industries. Alexander is presently the media and entertainment solutions manager for Akamai Technologies, overseeing the creation of media on-demand solutions for media and entertainment businesses to digitally deliver music, movies, games, and syndicated content. Prior to Akamai, Alexander held positions with and provided consulting services to high tech and media and entertainment businesses including Microsoft, Cisco, Verizon, Level 3, HP, Parker Guitars, EB Games, Turbine Entertainment, nVIDIA, and ATI. He also founded and operated the independent record label, Empire Underwater. Alexander serves on the advisory boards of the Themis Group, which provides marketing and community management of online games and entertainment, and the WarCry Network, the largest independent network of "massively multi-player" games including Everquest, Lineage, Star Wars Galaxies, and City of Heroes. Alexander has spoken on the subjects of Digital Content Delivery, VoIP (Voice Over IP), and IP Security at industry conferences including CeBit, Internet World, and NEMO. He has contributed to several industry white papers regarding online gaming and electronic entertainment, most recently the Themis Report 2004. He is a contributing author to the International Game Developer Association Online Games 2005 white paper.
