| Thursday, February 9 10:45 AM - Noon Session A: Navigating Growth: Media, Entertainment & Technology Innovation: Regulation or Over-Regulation, Consolidation, Guilds, Government & Consumer Interests As the media, entertainment and technology industries continue to grow and further impact the lives of all citizens, a scrutiny of how the industry expands and how it impacts its various constituencies will on ongoing an area of concern as well as a natural part of the public conversation. While broadcast has always been understood to be a public resource and regulated by the government, the growth of cable, satellite, mobile and broadband have generally been less closely monitored by government agencies. And with the ongoing pattern of media consolidation in broadcast, cable and mobile, questions of what serves the public interest is of ongoing concern. Equally interesting and relevant is the cost of innovation both to the consumer and industry - the massive investments made by the media conglomerates as they provide greater broadband and mobile services to the consumer. In our world of dizzying innovation and change, the challenge of navigating that growth or even understanding it is the task on hand in this session. Patric M. Previously, he was a managing director at SG Cowen Securities in New York and for 17 years was first vice president and senior entertainment industry analyst at Merrill Lynch. He has been recognized by Institutional Investor magazine as a top analyst in his field for over 20 years and received a first-place ranking for 10 years. In 1998, The Wall Street Journal named him No. 1 casino and No. 3 entertainment analyst in its all-star ranking. The author of two texts and an adjunct professor at Columbia University, he holds an M.B.A. from Columbia, an M.A. in economics from New York University, and is a chartered financial analyst.Andrew Moss, Senior Director, Media/Entertainment & Technology Convergence Group, Microsoft Corp., Andy Moss has more than 22 years in the high tech industry. During the past thirteen years, Andy has operated as an internal entrepreneur within Microsoft to develop, launch and manage new products and services for the Microsoft Corporation, including Microsoft Consulting Services, Microsoft Visual Studio Enterprise Edition (programming tools), Microsoft Digital Broadcast Manager, and Windows XP Plus!. In his current role, Andy drives Microsoft's strategy where business and technical directions intersect public policy issues, such as Intellectual Property and Content Protection, Cable Compatibility, Digital TV, Trusted Computing, VoIP, and Broadband Adoption. Throughout his career, Andy has worked extensively to help customers adopt effective and creative uses for new innovations and advanced technologies. Andy is on the Board of Directors for the Digital Honesty Campaign, and was recently a Co-Chair for ARDG, the Analog Reconversion Discussion Group, a multi-industry organization established to review solutions to Intellectual Property concerns arising during the transition from analog to digital consumer technologies. He is an active public speaker on technology issues in a variety of forums, including the Harvard Law School Beekman Center, Rockefeller Foundation Study and Conference Center, The American Assembly (an affiliate of Columbia University), U.S. Dept. Of Commerce and a range of industry events and conferences. Patric M. Verrone is the President of the Writers Guild of America, west. He graduated magna cum laude from Harvard College where he was an editor of The Harvard Lampoon. He got his law degree from Boston College Law School where he served on the Boston College Law Review. He is a member of the California and Florida Bars, has been an adjunct professor of entertainment law at Loyola Law School and UCLA Extension, and has served as editor of the Annual Entertainment Law Issue of Los Angeles Lawyer magazine since 1996. He has been a television writer and producer for nearly 20 years and his credits include The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson, The Larry Sanders Show, The Critic, Pinky and the Brain, Rugrats, Muppets Tonight, Futurama, and The Simpsons. He has won two Emmys and been nominated eight times in four different categories. He won the 2002 Writers Guild Animation Caucus Lifetime Achievement Award. He is married to fellow TV writer and novelist Maiya Williams. They have three children (who also want to be writers) and a Labrador retriever (who wants to direct).Bill Murray, President of William Murray & Associates: Bill Murray is Se nior Fellow at the USC Center for the Digital Future, and President of William Murray & Associates, a consulting firm focused on developing international media strategies for digital content protection, audiovisual regulation, film production tax policy, and international government relations, with clients including venture capital firms, governments, and media companies. Before consulting, Bill was Executive Vice President and Co-Chief Operating Officer of the Motion Picture Association (MPA), the international trade association representing the international interests of the major Hollywood studios. During his time at the MPA, Bill was instrumental in designing a framework for Hollywood to respond to the challenges presented by changing technology. Rather than simply attacking piracy in the traditional fashion, Bill developed a multi-disciplinary approach which addressed the legislative, public relations, legal, and technological aspects of the issue, an approach intended to allow film and television producers to maximize the potential of new technology while aggressively confronting piracy threats. Bill is a frequent speaker on the entertainment industry, having addressed the International Federation of Film Producers, the Los Angeles Consular Corps, the Banff World Television Conference, the Rio de Janeiro Film Festival, the Toronto International Film Festival, the ShoWest motion picture industry convention, and university audiences including UCLA, Pepperdine, Thunderbird, and USC, where he delivered the keynote address at the 2003 Marshall School of Business International Case Competition. He has served on the Board of a number of key industry organizations such as AGICOA (the Association of International Collective Management of Audiovisual Works), the Canadian Copyright Collective, FIAPF (International Federation of Film Producers Associations), the International Video Federation, the US-Mexican Film Bilateral Committee, and the Franco-American Cultural Fund. Mr. Murray holds a dual-discipline B.A. in Business Administration and English Literature from Albright College in Reading, Pennsylvania, and an M.B.A. in International Management from Thunderbird, the Garvin School of International Management in Glendale, Arizona.Jonathan Rintels is the Executive Director of the Center for Cre ative Voices in Media, a nonprofit, nonpartisan 501(c)(3) dedicated to preserving in Americas media the original, independent, and diverse creative voices that enrich our nations culture and safeguard its democracy. Creative Voices Board of Advisors includes Warren Beatty, Blake Edwards, Sissy Spacek, Hinton Battle, Peggy Charren, and many other winners of Oscars, Emmys, Tonys, Peabodys, as well as respected academics. Since its founding in 2003, Creative Voices has become a respected and influential resource for policymakers and the press on the dangers media concentration and media censorship pose to creative artists and, more importantly, the American public. Mr. Rintels has published numerous commentaries and op-eds in the press, appeared frequently on national TV and radio programs, including "The News Hour with Jim Lehrer," CNN, CNBC, Fox News, and NPR, and is often quoted by the nations leading newspapers and publications. Mr. Rintels is also a successful writer of film and television. Among his many credits, his film for CBS, Snowbound: The Jim and Jennifer Stolpa Story, the true story of a young couple trapped with their baby for over a week in a California blizzard, was one of the highest-rated television movies of the past decade and received numerous critical accolades.
